Lots of stupid takes here it seems. “This is a bad system because it replaces a milquetoast system with zero actual features or engagement and it makes me have to do things.”Flying in WoW is currently a measure of pure utility, it has no function other than to expediate transportation from point A to point B while ignoring terrain, conflict with enemies, or any engagement with the world. It is subjectively speaking, purely not fun aside from having a pleasant view in some cases and objectively it facilitates player disengagement with the game and it is a non system. Anything else is pretty much better by default by proxy of being greater than zero. You cannot have extreme measures of pure utility, quality of life, and streamlining such as this in a game without there being consequences to the health of the game. It’s in the same vein as how dungeon finder caused the breakdown of communication and understanding in dungeons between players or how cross realm play eroded the community of a server and guilds. Yes the systems make things easier, faster, and “uncomplicates” things, but there’s a real cost to it and oftentimes the things a game needs to be healthy long term are more important than just sheer convenience for some. The only thing that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me about Dragon Riding is why can’t I use *any* dragon? I would much rather prefer to use my Fel Drake mount. It would be nice if I could slap some armor on them as well, but I don’t see that happening realistically.TLDR don’t complain about something completely featureless being replaced by something that facilitates engaging with the game, just because your brain is on cooldown while you’re logged in and you want a nothing burger to get to the raid faster so you can log off for the week.I don’t know about you, but I like a little more game with my game.
I'm wary of any decision like this because if you're gonna disallow players from using an existing ability (like normal flight) in a new area and only let them use your "OMG NEW AND IMPROVED SUPER HYPE" version, it makes me feel that the new version has parts to it players aren't going to like and would rather avoid by using the old flight system. How about just design the new system so no one in their right mind wouldn't want to use it and giving us the option to do either?
So much for using a demon mount on my Demonology Warlock. This is not a feature that will tip me toward coming back to WoW, it actually making me lean away from getting the new expansion. I want mounts that fit the fantasy of my character not a dragon only. some alts will love the dragon, my Demo warlock will hate it. And so much for the notion of flying at the start of a expac, knowing Blizzard this will take months to grind out. But I will reserve judgement until I know more. Dragonriding looks cool but I should not be restricted to this one mount. My opinion and I know blizzard could not care less about my opinion and for me as a player, so I'll wait and see and watch for more news.
We going to "Dragon Isle". For some weird reasons, ALL of our current "Dragon" Mounts (not mentioning other flying mounts" suddenly forgot how to fly.Ok.... 👌👌
This thread is something else. So many folks here who think anyone who doesn't agree with how THEY think people should play - or how THEY think the game is "improved"- needs to quit, or else are just "stupid". People who think that the only valid form of feedback is complimentary. People who are offended (!) that someone is disappointed with the prospect that the way they have enjoyed playing the game could be replaced with something they most likely do NOT find enjoyable. These are opinions about game news (or possible game news as no one has submitted actual confirmation link(s) as of this post). It's no one's business to be offended by someone else's opinion/speculation of what could be in the next expansion!Because clearly everyone has to have the exact same definition of "fun" and of what a MMORPG needs to be. It used to be, a fantasy game meant you didn't have to actually earn a pilot's license to fly, or take a college course in chemistry to brew a potion. What happened to letting us play the way WE want, and having fun the way WE think is fun, and not how we're *told* we can have fun?Face it, what YOU like and what the next person likes is unlikely to be exactly the same, which is why there must be choices in games. Not everyone likes melee, so they made ranged. Not everyone wants to play humans and dwarfs, so they made orcs and goblins. And so forth. Choice. You play your way, and someone else plays their way. Some people raid. Some people solo and craft. Some play PVE only, some people prefer PVP, some people enjoy both. Why is that a bad thing? Why should the rest of the gaming population be *forced* to play they way YOU insist is the best, the way you insist is the most fun, the way you think is the most "engaging", the way you think is the "best for the game"- in YOUR opinion? People are happy with what they like, and that's ok, they pay their subscription money and do what they like, you pay yours and play your way. Choice is good. If it is true that choice has been eliminated regarding how to fly, that is a loss for WoW and it's players, because choice is how you keep a diverse population of gamers happy, and keeps the game going, not by forcing everyone to like what you like and play what you play.
Dear Mr. Feasel and other Blizzard devs —Even though I don't enjoy arcade games, I'm more than willing to give your dragon riding concept a try when the expansion comes out. And perhaps the top levels of skill even offer what I feel I _need_ (not want) for many of my toons: the ability to hover, the ability to start and stop when I want, and the ability to adjust the rate at which I cover terrain to _my_ needs. Those needs include, among other things, the ability to chose where I land based on character safety (relatives of course), the ability to spot and identify gathering nodes, and the ability to do likewise for quest objectives. If I'm too busy playing a mini-game to do that, I really have no interest in the dragon riding system. I'll put up with it if I have to if you deign to allow us to have the flying so many of us know and enjoy now once we reach maximum level or some other, reasonable set of criteria, but please, a new system for the system's sake, if it turns out not to be what a large fraction of players find enjoyable and playable, is not something we need. Please, before you go too much farther down this path, sound out how players, particularly ones with several alts, feel about it. And then check during development, and again during beta. Please. Thanks,A WoW player for 17 years, whose best moment in the game came with achieving fast flying in Burning Crusade. YMMV.
That'll be one of the ideas that won't make it.Do have the new method, and perhaps areas only reachable by it, but removing "traditional" flying would be an unpleasant speed bump.
If you are going to sell flying mounts for money, you need to let players use them everywhere (after a period of time).Nothing looks more stupid than a dragon who forgot how to fly and has to walk around like an idiot because of reasons.
And now imagine farming herbs/ores while being forced into such sort of pseudo-flying. Think I'll pass, thank you.
