Once you've learned all the items these prototypes can teach you, it looks like the only purpose for these is to pull them apart for even more parts.

If you try using this and nothing happens, it's because you have another item in your inventory that is also called a prototype.

The wording makes it sound like you can only have one "Unrecognizable Prototype" but it also includes things like "Prototype: Tinker: Earthen Delivery Drill"

So if you type "proto" in your inventory search it should highlight this object and any more you have hiding in there. You will have to use the other object before you can actually use the Unrecognizable Prototype.

These are made by engineers using the Scour Through Scrap recipe which costs 5 Piles of Rusted Scrap. Scouring can be done anywhere. More often than not, it creates junk items that can be sold for a few silver or gold.

This Unrecognizable Prototype can be used anywhere -- no need to be at a crafting table.

You can carry as many of these as you want. However, when used it will create a "prototype" item and place it in your inventory. You can only have one prototype item in your inventory -- including your bank -- at a time.

Do not hesitate to use the prototypes even if it wastes the item. As an example, you might get say Prototype: Wormhole Generator: Khaz Algar. When used it will create a useable wormhole for all of the places that have been explored in the new expansion. And you can use that wormhole if needed. However, the primary purpose it to teach the recipe Wormhole Generator: Khaz Algar which will now be in listed on the recipe tab of your engineering profession.

Once again, the development team has gone out of their way to make things confusing and/or frustrating rather than intuitive.

If you want to max your Pilha de Sucata Enferrujada yield, keep at least one invention unlearned! (so anything marked 'Invention' in the Engineering window). This includes prototypes and those learned from Ideias Organizadas de Forma Compreensível. For details, see the spoiler tag.

Once you learn all inventions, they no longer drop from Vasculhar a Sucata. This sort of makes sense, but Desmontar Invenção also gives about 15 Pilha de Sucata Enferrujada on average so you lose out on a lot of scrap (which in turn give parts to use or sell). Desmontar Invenção takes exactly two minutes a stack at Crafting Speed 75%, so in the long run this is definitely worth it. Vasculhar a Sucata will give some leftover scrap (and notes in case you still miss patterns from Ideias Organizadas de Forma Compreensível) instead of inventions but this pales in comparison to the thousands you get from disassembling.

I can now first hand confirm this: wanting to max out my knowledge from First Crafts the only pattern I'm now missing is Cápsula de Fuga com Defeito: Inventar and Vasculhar a Sucata give me Protótipo: Cápsula de Fuga com Defeito consistently. If you go down to just one invention just bank it to prevent learning it by accident. Every other invention will now be Protótipo Irreconhecível that you can Desmontar Invenção at will.

I'm not sure if this effective nerf is intended but it seems to be, considering the 'leftover' from scouring after you learn all inventions.

1. Use Inventar each day (daily CD) to make a Protótipo Irreconhecível.
2. Click on Desmontar Invenção in your engineering spells and in the selection box, choose the prototypes you have in your bags. Disassemble them.
3. Right click all the Anotações Escritas às Pressas in your bags so that they become Ideias Organizadas de Forma Compreensível.
4. Right click each Ideias Organizadas de Forma Compreensível to use and learn something new.
