The Best DPS for Crucible of Storms - In-depth Look at the Strongest DPS Specs for the Raid

As the third week of Mythic Crucible of Storm starts, we believe it is a good time to talk about strongest DPS specs for the raid and why are they being used so much by high-end raiders. Thanks to its encounter design, three DPS specs have seen the spotlight in Crucible of Storms so far: Affliction Warlocks, Elemental Shamans, and Shadow Priests.
All three specializations have moments to shine throughout the new Crucible of Storms raid, highlighting different strengths they provide to the raid. Below we will discuss what those strengths are and why were they so dominant in the new raid compared to Battle of Dazar'alor, even without any major class changes happening ever since.
Understanding the Crucible of Storms Encounters
An important feature of both encounters in the Crucible of Storms raid is the presence of multiple targets during a grand part of the fights, however, unlike fights like Zul in Uldir or Jadefire Masters in Battle of Dazar'alor, these targets are usually spread, due to different mechanics. The fact of having these targets spread around their respective areas is what makes these three specs so strong, because, unlike Outlaw Rogues or Havoc Demon Hunters, they are specialized in spread target cleave.
Another factor that leads to the success of these specs is that two of them, Affliction and Elemental, can funnel extra resources in a main target should they choose to do it. This funneling happens in a similar vein to what Subtlety Rogues did for Mythic Zul in Uldir, and, while not being the one specs able to do that, they are currently in a strong position as far as class balance goes while doing it.
This fight style, overall, isn't good for melee specs, as they will usually be too far for any target swaps and targets won't be close enough for any cleave. Most guilds used the minimum number of melee, being one Havoc Demon Hunter for
Marchio del Caos
and sometimes some Assassination Rogues for their high boss damage.
Affliction Warlocks

Crucible of Storms Raid Tips
For
The Restless Cabal
, both Affliction and Destruction Warlocks are widely used, as both specs are strong in the encounter. However, the situation changes for
Uu'nat, Harbinger of the Void
. Affliction is able to exploit the large number of adds present in the fight, including the high uptime
Guardiano Imperituro
s. Having constant adds up is exploited by having them throw
Agonia
on all targets, giving them a surplus of
Frammenti d'anima
. This surplus
Frammenti d'anima
are then transformed into extra
Afflizione Instabile
s and all these extra damage can be funneled directly to
Uu'nat, Harbinger of the Void
, plus increasing the uptime from
Acume Devastante
and
Calamità a Cascata
.
Another huge incentive to have
Stregone
s in general for
Uu'nat, Harbinger of the Void
is their
Circolo Demoniaco
talent. This allows all Warlocks in the group to completely bypass most, if not all damage from
Sguardo Penetrante di N'zoth
, which, in combination with all the damage happening in the last phase, can be deadly. This perk, combined with the already high damage output from the spec, is what led Method to use
10 Affliction Warlocks
for their World 2nd kill of
Uu'nat, Harbinger of the Void
, at one point using 12 during the progression.
Warlocks from Method used
Disfatta Inevitabile
instead of
Calamità a Cascata
. Since they had
Agonia
rolling in many targets at once, they reach max stacks on
Disfatta Inevitabile
quickly, giving them a lot of damage and sustain, reducing the healing required on them. However, the issue with this is that they were forced to stand still longer to channel
Risucchio di Vita
, which requires a lot of movement planning and can be tricky in a fight with as much movement as Uu'nat.
Elemental Shamans

Crucible of Storms Raid Tips
Elemental Shamans, for Battle of Dazar'alor, are a prime pick for their high overall boss damage. This continues to be the case in Crucible of Storms. Crucible increases this potential, by offering even more secondary targets for
Folgore del Fuoco
which the Shaman can use to get more
Eruzione di Lava
and
Folgore di Lava
procs, enhanced by using
Potenziale Igneo
traits.
All these funneling elements work really well especially for
Uu'nat, Harbinger of the Void
, when there is a high uptime on
Guardiano Imperituro
s, having them far from the boss due to
Vincolo Cieco
, and damage on them not that important. Below you can see the breakdown of damage done to bosses according to Warcraft Logs.
Another important advantage for
Sciamano
in general for
Uu'nat
is
Reincarnazione
. During the encounter, you will have to use the
Tempest Caller
relic to kill adds with
Tempesta dell'Annichilimento
, as they are unkillable otherwise. However, this effect lasts way longer than necessary, causing extra damage in the raid, which is where
Reincarnazione
comes in.
Tempesta dell'Annichilimento
stops if the caster is killed, so the idea is to kill all the adds and then sacrifice the
Sciamano
that used the relic to mitigate raid damage and then have the
Sciamano
use
Reincarnazione
to get back up, not wasting a combat ress.

Shadow Priests

Crucible of Storms Raid Tips
In the first week of Crucible of Storms, it was clear that Shadow would be a strong spec for this mini-raid. Due to the enhancements provided by
Spiriti Propizi
and
Apparizioni Adirate
, empowered further by
Coro della Follia
, Shadow's
became a strong part of the spec's spread multitarget toolkit in Battle for Azeroth. Even with the
hotfixed nerfs to Auspicious Spirits
that happened before the opening of Mythic, the spec still shows a lot of strength in the raid, due to the sheer synergy of its encounters with the spec.
Shadow's main show of strength happened in the first encounter of the raid,
The Restless Cabal
, as the fight has two bosses and even more adds spawning during the encounter, it is a perfect spread target cleave encounter. The sheer strength of the spec in this encounter is probably best shown by looking at the damage statistics for it, even after the nerf to
Spiriti Propizi
.
Distorsione del Fato
is another key damage factor for Shadow in the encounter, as
Apparizione dall'Aldilà
adds will stay alive with 1% HP for extended periods, allowing Priests to keep the talent active for that duration.
Data from Heroic
as Mythic data isn't yet available, but the spread should be similar.
Damage aside, Shadow's utility really fits the encounter well. With the short enrage timer, guilds want to abuse
Promesse di Potere
as much as possible, meaning players will be juggling with the debuff as much as possible during the encounter. With a limited number of healers to dispell, some specs will see a shorter uptime due to dispell cooldowns; however, Shadow can be self-sufficient with their dispells thanks to
Dissoluzione di Massa
. Shadow also has full benefit from
Promesse di Potere
regardless of when they receive it since the spec doesn't rotate around damage cooldowns, like Havoc Demon Hunters or Destruction Warlocks.
Parola del Potere: Scudo
and
Dispersione
are also potent tools in the encounter, allowing Shadow Priests to keep 9 stacks of
Promesse di Potere
through multiple
Dubbio Devastante
, while most specs need to reset their stacks to avoid getting killed by them. Besides those two baseline abilities, Shadow also has other tools to help maintain high stacks, like the
Santuario
or
Morte Rifiutata
Azerite Traits. Overall, Shadow has the best toolkit to deal with the
The Restless Cabal
encounter, both damage, and utility-wise.
