A little cheap to leave it to adblockers to prevent these things. Ads on Wowhead are among the most intrusive anyway and a site-owner should pay way more attention to this then it is done here. Yes: Ads pay for these sites. And no: That's still no excuse for some of the ads here!
While I use add blocker, it isn't so much for thing like this... though as someone pointed out, this isn't the first time. The bigger reason is you insist on audio adds. That and I can't count the number of times before when some add here or on another site locked everything up. Heck, if it matters that much find some way to fool the adds into thinking we are not blocking them, that will give them the same sales as if I wasn't blocking them since I never click on adds.
Good job Wowhead, :)It's worth mentioning that without an exploit in Flash, Java or your browser, you still have to download and run something to get infected by any malware. User beware! Don't download random programs that seem fun or cool or useful and just rely on your anti-virus software.Keep your flash and java updated (or if you're really worried, disabled unless you are actively using them (there are addons from your official browser add-on source that can help toggle them on and off easily.))Browsers tend to update themselves these days, and using one of the above suggested anti-malware tools periodically is always a good idea. Also be wary of fake anti-malware tools or adverts pretending to be results scans offering to clean your pc if you'll only download and run something... or hand over money.Edit: When updating flash or java make sure you're doing so from the regular automatic updates or the official sites... not a random "you need to update X" pop up when browsing the internet.Java kindly try to install their own adware, so uncheck the Ask homepage crap when updating Java. (This makes me want to punch them, it's not a legitimate revenue model.)
This is why I always have —and always will— blocked ads. No, wowhead, there is NO WAY you are giving me virus... i mean ads. I don't you keep pushing people to disable adblock, this situation only demonstrates how right have we always been.I'd gladly donate money to keep the site alive, but I hate ads and viruses, and Wowhead is full of them.
Is this why I'd have a page up, go back to the game, come back 10-15 minutes later, and it would be at a different page? And by that I mean not a Wowhead page at all; most of them were full page ads for a different game altogether! It even happened to 4 pages at once. x.x
Thanks for the heads up! Will be subscribing very soon now.
I wonder if it's been considered that a small portion of revenue from WoW goes to fan sites like Wowhead and MMO-Champion and such to help pay for their "services", I think it would cut down on (bad) ads served, would possibly make it able for staff/volunteers to be paid in some capacity.I understand that there are hundreds, if not thousands of fan sites, but there could be some sort of hoop(s) to go through to get this "Blizzard Certified/Funded" status that may need reevaluation every year or so to make sure that defunct sites aren't still collecting money.I'm sure Blizzard be willing to put it on the table and it would only make fan sites better by providing them funding which some sites claim they're lacking.
Like mentioned by others I use Adblock as well, I'm sorry I know you guys need the income to survive, but I need to protect myself. This kind of malware adds happens all the time on so many sites now that Adblock have become an essential part of my security software. :(
wait theres a wowhead PREMIUM? /goingtobuybrb
I use Adblock because certain ads are very intrusive, sometimes even catching clicks on apparently empty sidebars (e.g. when I want the browser to have the focus again) and sadly, websites are given little active control over which ads are displayed via ad partners. But I understand the need for advertisement, so if I wouldn't have Wowhead Premium anyway, I'd likely whitelist Wowhead, it's easily my most visited website. Can't think of another website I'd whitelist, though.
This is why I use NoScript. I can allow plain image ads while blocking Javascript and Flash-based ads.
Macs and OSX. Nothing to see here...
