I knew that one of my 37 open tabs was throwing a hissy fit at the antivirus. Guess that was it. Sorted, good job, business as usual. Carry on.
It makes me feel bad, but I'm glad that I block ads. (Not just on wowhead, but everywhere because I know this kind of thing happens.)I would like to support wowhead with it disabled, but I had to re-enable it a few months ago because I kept getting the sound ones. It was getting way too annoying having multiple tabs up with voices coming from each one.
This is why it pays to have your security settings on high. Flash doesn't play without permission, Java is locked off browser, Cookies set on High, Plus AdBlock, Ghostery, and DoNotTrackMe Helps to. If Adblock doesn't Doesn't Display it is running a script it isn't supposed to. Wowhead why do you need to Flash to display a Ad? Why do you need to redirect the page to Display an Ad? Why can't you have is so if AdBlock is enabled it shows an AdBlock Friendly Ad? DO NOT CLICK ON THE FREE IPAD LINK!_Just noticed that adblocker is off and DoNotTrackme is disabling Ads That have a Tracking cookie. -_- that is pretty much all of them.
Have it so if the website sees you have AdBlocker it displays AdBlocker friendly adds. It has been done before.
I don't have Java or Flash installed on my computer. Sure there are still a few websites this prevents me from accessing, and I can't use Wowhead's model viewer, but it significantly reduces the security risks for accessing the web.
Scan your computers just to be on the safe side. I ran ADWCleaner and found a few rogue addons that got installed to Firefox. No clue where they came from.
This has probably already been said, but this is exactly why I block all ads. The web as a whole needs to learn to improve ad quality or give up on generating revenue through them. They all want you to "disable adblockers plzzz xoxo", but this would put everyone in risk of PC contamination and likely much worse consequences (such as identity theft. gee, my whole life is ruined, but at least they got their ad view's worth out of me!)Yes yes, that was a typical internet rant, but I would like to clarify at least one thing. I don't blame Wowhead. They did what they were supposed to do and dropped the malicious ads, nor were they trying to spread any malware. I'll continue to use adblocking software, but it's nice to see companies taking responsibility for malicious ads. This site has helped me SO much in my 5ish? years of playing WoW. It's extremely likely that I would have never gotten so into the game without Wowhead. That plus this news post... I think I should consider a premium sub soon!
And finally, after 6 months since reporting it to you, I'm no longer getting redirected on Android devices while browsing WoWHead. Nor am I getting Message Box Popups telling me my Phone has a Virus.I hope those specific advertising partners are finally being given the boot for good as they are clearly incapable of vetting adverts they serve!
Get Adblock PlusNot sure why everyone does not have this. It is the only required extension for any browser.
AdblockPlus for life. Whitelist these nuts please, this is exactly why whitelisting is a joke. Hope all those "features we are building" are worth it LMAO.
Nobody is perfect in this day and age, but we all thank you for the diligence that you show in taking care of the problem. I for one, love this site and will continue to use it knowing that it is being taken care of by people that care enough to admit when something has gone wrong. Thank you for all your hard work wowhead team.
AdBlock (Not the Corrupt Plus Version) and Ghostery! Sorry if you cannot Control what Ad`s shows on your Site i will not Whitlist the Ad`s. On my Sites i use only Google AdSense not the "Get 1 MIO $ per 10 Klicks" Ad Provider.
Personally, I find the honesty refreshing. I do not block the ads, since that's what pays for this site, which we all can enjoy without cost to us. If enough people block all the ads, for long enough, the site will have to close, and we will lose a valuable resource. It's simple economics. I'm not a fan of ads, but they are a necessary evil, if you want free content. The key is that they are tastefully done and not obnoxious. While this incident is unfortunate, it probably happens more than people realize, and it is probably swept under the rug more than it is reported.
