I know this seems like a no-brainer to some, but I just ran into someone who didn't know this so I figured I'd post it here for folks just getting into the game. Make sure that you take the time to put the icon for this on your hotbar, as well as for any other profession you might undertake. You'll find the icon in your Spellbook under the "General" tab. It will save you a lot of time in the future.

I just started the game, and my friend who has been playing for about 2 years now said this is a good way to make money. I am an undead mage so I learned the abilty in Brill. I now make sure I dig up every plant I find, and I am making some good money, or so I think.

Herbalism is an *incredibly* good cash skill. Early on, Swiftthistle will sell for about 4g a stack, and at the endgame, Icecap, Mountain Silversage, Gromsblood, and Dreamfoil will go for straight-up silly amounts of money.
You can easily finance another manufacturing skill with this, though I'd pick up another gathering skill (skinning works well, since you'll be grinding beast mobs often anyway and you don't have to choose between tracking ore or herbs) at least until 60.

Swiftthistle (

) will also periodically be within a Mageroyal or Briarthorn herb.

From 1-75 as an alliance player I found it fastest to run around Dun Morogh picking everything I could see until they turned green. Then I headed to Loch Modan to get briarthorn and mageroyal.

I find this a very good money maker due to constant demand and low deposits (ie. less risk for you). Earthroot and Liferoot are also required for quests (stack of 5 and 8 respectively), so they sell even better. At level 19, I find my Briarthorn, Stranglekelp, and Mageroyal sell VERY well. herbalism has supported by daily upgrading of items and a healthy 22g for one week's play, and I'm only level 19. By reading this you agree not to roll on Nagrand realm. :)

wait picking a plant has a casting time?

With gathering professions now comes new passive and cast abilities. Herbalism now gives you the ability "Lifeblood". With each rank up in Herbalism, you obtain a new rank in this skill.
Lifeblood is a very useful skill that you can cast. This is a self only heal, which is instant. Upon casting this, flowers will sprout around your character and you will be healed over time. The amount in which you are healed is increased with your skill/rank level.
Here are the different ranks for this ability in order of ranks and herbalism skill:
(mouse over the link to view the information for the rank)
75 - 149 (Apprentice):
Lifeblood (Rank 1)
150 - 224 (Journeyman):
Lifeblood (Rank 2)
225 - 299 (Expert):
Lifeblood (Rank 3)
300 - 374 (Artisan):
Lifeblood (Rank 4)
375 - 449 (Master):
Lifeblood (Rank 5)
450+ (Grand Master)
Lifeblood (Rank 6)
Happy Flower Picking! :)
(Edit: Corrected skill level vs rank, thanks!)

As Alliance farm 1-75 in Teldrassil.
If you're a high level that's just gotten herbalism, that is.

Every herb in WoW would be considered a drug in real life.
Infact most of the herbs you can find on WoW are herbs that exist in real life, they have just been given a diffrent name and skin, and in some cases the herbs are used for the same purposes.
With the herbs/weeds/seeds/roots you can do two things:
Either grind them into potions trough using the Alchemist skill
Or grind them into pigments (color reflecting substance) by using the Inscription skill.
Or in some cases the herbs can be used in certain foods...
The only herbs that players could consume right after harvest were the fire seeds, with that nerfed there are no more herbs that can immediatly be consumed.
The reason why we can't eat these herbs right after harvest is because every single herbalist would be floating on thin air or get their blood pumped out due to an OD on earth roots XD

As a horde, the best place I found to simply level herbalism from 1-75 is in Eversong Woods. Simply make a large circle around the mountain surrounding Fairbreeze Village at these points: the the Runestone in the Scorched Grove, the runestone to the right of it, Runestone Shan'dor east of that, up north to East Sanctum, and then to Fairbreeze village and around again. This will take you through a lot of areas that contain Bloodthistle in abundance.
Each stop (at the runestones and at sanctum) yielded 2-4 nodes for me in bloodthistle, along with all the Peacebloom, silverleaf and earthroot you'd normally find. As opposed to just wandering around looking for nodes, with the bloodthistle in the area it makes it a lot easier to get skill ups. It may only be 1-75ish skillups, but it makes for an easier grind when you're trying to get to 450 like me.
