On a more serious note. This is given to players so they can properly quest in the flying-mount heavy zones of Icecrown and Storm Peaks even if they don't even have 225 riding. From appearances you fly at run speed (although I can't check this myself).

Just saw a thread on the wow forums regarding this mount. Apparently it can be used in combat.

As of this date, this mount counts as a Vehicle and thus (just tested this):

You won't get dismounted if dazed by a mob
You can mount it while in PvE or PvP combat
If you dismount while in the air, you get slowfall

Enjoy your free PvP escape! :)

Limitations are however:

Can only be flown in the zones Ice Crown, Storm Peaks and Sholazar Basin
60% Flying speed
If you log out while in the air, you will fall down upon logging in, because the mount disappears

Enjoy getting nowhere in all the time in the world! :)

i am on a competition with my friend,
who gets to lvl 80 fastest...
he is mow lvl 76 and keeps grinding for money for the flying mount and i just read this topic and silently laugh xD

yes, I can confirm this flies at 60% speed so same as a normal mount. However,

you can't "follow" another player
and Crusader Aura had no effect

I assume that all other movement enhancements will not work either therefore.

What no one has mentioned is where you get them. I got mine from the goblin npc next to the Flight Master at K3. No charge.

I love this thing.

If you happen to be the owner of the Headless Horseman's mount, you can mount the gryphon and then mount the horse. it's quite hilarious to see. The chicks love it.

Also, for anyone trying to get the Mine Sweeper achievment, you can simply run over ten mines on this mount and get it. since the mount has a healthbar, it just takes damage rather than shooting you up into the air or dismounting you.

Can we narrow this down a lil ? 77 DK (friends toon) with no flying skill got the loaner riens , is this a mater of not having a flyer , or no 280% skill , or Cold Weather Flying ? I'm afraid to get "too" skilled to acuire this lil treasure !

AFAIK, the only conditions required to obtain this item (as of patch 3.0.9) are: being level 77+ and not having Cold Weather Flying. My old main--Druid that has epic flight from BC days--hit 77 today and was able to pick up the loaner gryphon vehicle before I bought Cold Weather Flying.

As I found out just a moment ago, if you get logged out (via going afk for a long period of time) you will log in with no mount and fall to your death if you are in the air, bit of a pain but a lesson learned.

While waiting to summon people, i noticed that while someone in my party was on this, the arrow to get on was green for me. I was able to jump on the mount and control it while he was on it. He was only able to sit there, but still on the mount.

Yea, i had two party members and i could swap between them, this hijacking can be done while mounted on your own flying mount or anothers loaner. so while we were flying, id randomly hijack them. its great :D

lol i always stole this from my buddy while we were running HoL in stormpeaks...... so apparentaly this IS a 2 player mount. but he had no control over it once i got onto it..

As of right now, 3.1.2, I was doing the quest https://www.cuckhead.com/cata/quest=12886, and it bugged out on me, not allowing me to harpoon anything.

Rather than just falling to my death I decided to try this guy out and it worked. I mounted my loaner-gryphon, while mounted on a drake. Looks pretty weird.

I wonder, with the changes they're making to mounts in patch 3.2 (specifically the flying mount speed will be increased to 150% for non-epic flying) if they will leave this at 60% as more incentive to get your flight training.

You can obtain this item from "Honest" Max in K3 in the Storm Peaks. I just got the reins with only epic land riding skill because im cheap enough to wait for the next patch. =3

Ok... here's the lowdown on everything you need/want to know

- This mount is ONLY available if you do not have Cold Weather Flying (CWF) AND if you are lvl 77+
- This IS a passenger mount but the passenger has control of the mount and the owner cannot leave the mount
- This does NOT count as a mount towards the mount achievements
- This DOES take up an inventory slot
- This is only a 60 % mount and will stay that way through the patches as a motive to get CWF
- This is obtained from Honest Max at K3 in storm peaks for no charge
- You do NOT need to have any riding skill to get this mount
- This was changed from a vehicle and can no longer do the minesweeper achievement
- You can NOT use this mount in combat
- You no longer get dismounted after logging out
- Usable in ONLY Icecrown, Storm Peaks, and Sholazar Basin
- This will NOT disappear after getting CWF
- Yes it WILL take a LONG time to get where you want to go
- No this mount will NOT make you popular in the World (of Warcraft)
- You might end up being hijacked

As of patch 3.2, this item appears to be broken. There are several posts on the official forums regarding it. When attempting to fly in the designated zones, the error "You can't use that here." is returned.

Since I'm assuming this will be fixed, I'm simply posting this here to be helpful to other players who are coming here looking for answers. Once the item is fixed, I will return to edit the post to update the information, so I'd appreciate it if you didn't downrank this post.

EDIT: I spoke to a GM just now and she assured me that the issue is known and it is one of the highest priority fixes currently in the works. Good news for everyone!

EDIT #2: I just tested this in-game and they appear to be functional now. Enjoy!

You -can- use this item if you have cold-weather flying already.

Also, the loaner gryphon appears to fly at 150%, rather than the 60% it was speculated to remain at.

Note: It has supposedly been fixed as of Patch 3.2.0a, but I haven't been able to test it, seeing as I just gave up and borrowed money to fly. Word has it is in in fact working though.

Why did I spent alot of gold on cold weather and flying-ability when this is free? :(
Why would blizz make its speed equal to the normal flying speed? Makes a normal flying mount completely useless unless ur going to Outland or the zones where u dont need a flying mount in Northrend, dont say naxx cause naxx sux

I found out that you CAN use use this "mount" even while in-combat, so that way, if you think that you are about to die, just use the mount and fly away...

Note: damage will interrupt casting, so be sure to either stun or do a knockback on all the mobs

Seems to be bugged in Wrath Classic. I'm 77 without Cold Weather Flying. Loaned Gryphon Reins won't fly and only moves at normal running speed on the ground.
