This is a drop from Obsidian Sanctuary on "Hard" mode, which is clearing the trash, and not the 3 other bosses inside of the raid.

The reason that some raid groups clear the dragons before taking on Sartharion is because there are debuffs and disadvantages applies to the raid (or so i have heard) for each additional drake sitll alive and therefore it make the fight more difficult.

its actually much more fun then just "debuffs / disadvantages" to having the other 3 drakes up, Satharion calls each drake in after a set amount of time, so you end up fighting a big dragon, and 3 drakes :)

The 10 man three drakes is reputed to be a lot more difficult than the 25 man.

If you kill Sarth with all 3 drakes up you should be commended - given that one of the drakes causes any hits to do massive shadow damage back to the attack, and that another actually makes 99.9% of all damage ineffective (some damage still works, such as a warrior's damage shield).

The proper strat is to kill each drake 1 by 1 as they add to the fight (with 3 drakes up, aside from the very start of the first add and the end of the third add, you'll usually have 2 alive at one time), and deal with the abilities they bring appropriately. It's quite difficult as each drake summons void zones, as well as their own unique ability (spawning whelps, causing the shadow recoil damage aura, making the main four mobs immune), and these must be dealt with in addition to Sartharion's abilities (the main raid damage causer being lava wall - which with the immunity drake up will near-one shot anyone).

Got mine last Tuesday (2/3/2009). Arguably the most difficult fight in the game... but definitely worth it. These drakes look exactly like the 3 black drake bosses (Firemaw, Ebonroc, Flamegor) in BlackWing Lair

The strategy for the fight in general will run the same: Blow cooldowns and bloodlust once the drake tank has established threat on Tenebron, burn her down ASAP. As previously mentioned, you do NOT want a second spawn of whelps.

Once Tenebron is down, dps should swap to assist with killing any whelps/blazes that remain. DPS then resumes on Shadron, who has most likely been moved at this point by the drake tank to the place where Vesperon lands.

After Vesperon lands, you approach the "danger zone" for your Sartharion tank, since as soon as Vesperon summons his disciple, your Sarth tank starts taking 75% extra damage from Sartharion's breath weapon. At this point, your Sarth tank needs to start rotating cooldowns in order to stay alive during breath weapons, which is why most raids use Death Knights to handle this phase (Anti-Magic shell, Icebound Fortitude, & Bone Shield are all % damage reductions from all sources). Disc priests with Pain Suppression is also a great way to get through a cooldown requirement.

Since cooldowns won't last forever, it's important Shadron dies soon after Vesperon spawns his disciple, so that your DPS can enter the portal and kill the disciple (one of your DPS will need to offtank... warrior with a shield, bear druid, etc). Once this has happened, the situation becomes MUCH more tolerable, though your Sartharion tank will still be taking increased damage, and needs to be watched. Burn down Vesperon, enter the final portal, drop the second disiciple, and from there it is just a standard Sartharion. Drake tank can either take over for the sartharion tank, assist your add tank with flames, or just DPS.

We use the "easiest" composition to run with: 3/3/4. (3 Tanks, 3 Healers, 4 DPS). With this comp you have 1 sartharion tank & dedicated healer, 1 drake tank & dedicated healer, 1 add/whelp tank, and a generic "raid" healer that can also cross heal the drake tank.

The other comp I've seen the most success with is a 3/2/5 group, which focuses on bringing an extra DPS to burn down drakes faster, theoretically reducing the healing overhead needed. The chaotic situation, however, puts a LOT of stress on these 2 healers.

There is rumor of using a 2/3/5 comp, with the drake tank also trying to control adds, but this also leaves a lot of room for error, and as a drake tank myself... there is a LOT to keep track of to try and AOE tank adds as well.

Regardless, everyone should be in full sets of 25 man/Ilvl 213 gear before attempting 3 drakes. It is a fight that will greatly test your raid's raw stats in terms of heals, DPS, and Tanking abilities, as well as it's situational awareness.

Did it with:
1 warlock: 77k voidwalker w/ kings/fort/mark (Sarth tank during drakes)
2 tanks: warrior (on drakes) + paladin (on adds)
2 healers: disc priest (on Sarth tank) / druid (on raid)
5 dps: Fury warrior / mut rogue (anesthetic poison for adds) / hunter (MD on tanks) / ret paly (offheals) / ele shaman (offheals)

Everyone needs to: 1) avoid firewalls 2) avoid blue circles

Voidwalker tanks Sarth on front left of island, positioned where left firewalls won't hit.
Warrior tanks 1st drake down in back of island. DPS it quick. Warlock can help DPS on 1st drake to burn it faster, but his priority should be to health funnel voidwalker during bad firewalls (the ones from the right) to reduce damage, then reposition the voidwalker after firewall debuff disappears. Paladin leaves consecrates near portal to pick up whelp adds faster.

After 1st drake down, DPS whelp adds to get them out of the way, then DPS 2nd and 3rd drake. Should AoE down fire adds right after lava walls to keep them under control. Shaman can also heroism here to help take down then 2nd drake faster to reduce the chance of the drake tank getting double-breathed and ease healing.

After 3 drakes down, everyone in raid except 1) warlock/voidwalker, 2) the healers and 3) the add tank goes into portal to burn alcolytes down. Retpaly and ele shaman offheal in the portal while drake tank picks up alcolytes one at a time. After alcolytes are down warrior tank picks up Sarth in same position. Keep fire adds to a minimum while dpsing Sarth. It's just like 0 drake Sarth now.

At 5% Sarth enrages. Focus and burn Sarth. Offtank the adds and don't worry about them until Sarth is dead.

They're removing the 310% drakes from the Glory of the Raider 10/25-man achievements. The Sarth encounter drakes will still drop.

The idea behind this is to keep the 310% drakes extremely rare, and they will be adding new 310% drakes-via-achievements when Ulduar is released.

We did this last night using the VW tank method, I ended up getting the black drake too.

Kill order was the same for 25-man, Tenebron -> Shadron -> Vesperon. Taking portals to kill Vesperon add to remove torment and then killing Shadron's add at the end.

Group Makeup:

1 warrior tank for all drakes and the whelp spawn
1 fury DPS warrior
1 ret pally (me) 2H tanking fire adds and getting DPS in on drakes when possible
1 DK dps tanking adds in the portal and DPS
1 elemental shammy for heroism/DPS/healing in the portal
1 hunter for MD, tranqing enraged adds and DPS
1 warlock with the VW, ~76k buffed pre-nerf. snuck in some DPS on first drake but mostly doing health funnel the whole fight.
3 healers, 2 druids for raid healing/drake tank and 1 priest for VW tank

There is another strategy to do this fight, which I'm surprised nobody has posted on. It's termed the zerg strategy.

1 tank, 1 healer, 8 dps.

You need to synergize the dps one way, so like rogue/hunter/enhancement shammie/fury warriors/dks etc. 3-4 fury warriors helps for whirlwinding the adds.

Can also do it with casters, ele shaman/lock/mages/boomkin/spriest etc.

The healer should preferably be a shaman for another bloodlust, and the tank a protadin for great threat and aoe threat build to quickly pick up tenebron and any adds.

Sartharion is tanked back where tenebron lands, perpindicular to where he naturally lies, facing north (where shadron is kind of).

There is a ledge on the southwest of the island, where you assault from (inbetween tenebron and versperon), where the dps can stand on when the flame wall passes and not be hit (only the flamewall with a gap in the middle).

Sartharion should die in under 80 seconds, before the 2nd drake ever lands, and before 3 flame walls. This fight is to a great extent a luck fight. Luck on void fissures, luck on which way the firewalls come, and luck on sartharion and tenebron's breaths.

The raid needs at least a good 32k dps. It is advisable to have 2 shamans for quicker attempts, and players outside to fully raid buff, and also flasks/food etc. Everything must be blown, fire elementals, army of the dead (right on the pull) all cooldowns, in an attempt to burn him down as fast as possible.

This fight is like running the slot machines. It can take upwards of 7 hours to down him, or as quickly as 1-2 tries, all depending on luck on void fissures and lava walls. However, it is easier than doing it the long way, and at the end is the title and drake + gear.

It is a legit strat, and so I have posted it.

I got me one of these lovely beasts recently.. just one Question.. Why isnt the "Black Drake" ..Black?

it's more a Rust Red/Brown color... wtf? ( its not just my color setting btw ..check the posted screenshots as well. Everyone has a Red/Brown "Black Drake" :P )

However, in certain zones where a shader changes the over all color of things.. like Icecrown for example ..it does appear to be a black drake with a tan wings and underbelly. Everywhere else however its Reddish Brown. Lrn2#000000 Blizz GG!

@ Dgo: It is called a Black Drake because it is the spawn of Deathwing aka the father of the Black Dragonflight. Just like Sartharion, Onyxia and Nefarian it is a member of the Black Dragonflight. I would be honored to mount on the sons and daughters of Deathwing himself!

BTW....exxess ! and ? and numbers that make no sense aren't going to make people trust your raids stability. I have pugged 10man Naxx with random people and not once put any ! or ? marks on my posts.

It's linage is not at all in question within my post.
They call it a Black Drake ..with 99% of the other drake mounts labeling is in referance to thier color. The blue, the bronze, the green, the violet, and red drakes to name but a few.
The developers go on to lable some emerald and azure for flare, but ya thats just another way to say green and blue. My whole post was just questioning why did they change the trend when they colored the model of the black drake? ( again ..the "?" character denotes a question)

To this I say, read it again please. I used a question mark (?) at the end of my questions and an "exclamation mark" (!) at the end of my last sentance for emphasis.

Other than that, nothing concerning my credentials as a raider was ever mentioned.

To conclude, I restate in a simple fashion my original question of "Why did you make the black drake a rusty red / brown color Blizz?"

I got this mount last night and the have had the twilight drake for a quite a while now.

if you do it the "right way" the fight can indeed be very hectic which is how we did it our first few kills.
Last night we did the zerg strat which requires you kill him basically before the seconds drake lands and kills your tank.

Raid makeup was 8 dps 1 healer 1 tank.

dps ranged from 3950 - 6800

the hardest part is the last 5-10% if you can have a rogue evasion tank or even a boomkin get some lucky dodges after the tank dies its very doable. (our shadow priest ended up dispersion tanking the adds which was not intentional but worked wonders to pull that extra 5-10 seconds of dps off to complete the kill)

personally I like this mount better than the twilight drake as it looks like your riding around on sarth haha.

Got one of these today, zerg method. DK tank Holy priest healer, 1 hunter, 3 rogues, 1 frost dk, ret pally, ench shaman, and feral druid kiting tenebron.

Got hit by the second lava wall, hit one of those whirlwind thingys in the lava, flow through the room and sarth died follow me. Was epic. :)

The answer is simple. Proto-drakes from the raid achievements are 310% speed, the drakes that drop from Sartharion are 280%. Woop-ti-woop, see what they did there?

I think the fact that 1 is a drake and the other a proto-drake makes more of a difference than 30% speed difference between the two.

I joined a raid for this and everything was did correctly until the so desired mount dropped. We discussed what would be the method to win the drop, and the decision was to normally roll (by the simple "/roll" command) and the higher one gets the mount. So we did. Everyone who needed it rolled for the item, just by curiosity the Master Looter (nickname: Sardek) took an 11, i took 100, and since there were no ties the mount SHOULD be mine. Now, here we go:
People start to congratulate me and disbanding, the Master Looter took the item and went offline. My partners started asking me if he gave me the item as he should, i answeared no, everyone got ^&*!ed off with this issue. Then i started whispering asking what the hell was he doing and the answear was "Sorry, i got paid for that".

Reported to a GM and all i got was an e-mail with the subject "Disagreement about the loot" saying "We're sorry, we can't help you with this issue, there are in-game ways to prevent this to happen", but we all know there are NONE, if you use the Group Loot option to automatically give the item to the winner, there's no way you assure someone won't need an item they can't even wear just because people are stupid and greedy, and take it from someone who realy needs it. I've seen that happen many times, and i'm sure i'm not the only one.

I have printscreens to proove everything and i know the nicknames of everyone in that raid. I've been tracking wow armory constantly to see if any of my raid partners gets an achiv for "learning" the mount, so i can catch the guy who supposely bought the item from the master looter. I'm basically doing Blizzard's job with my poor user-methods, since i don't even know if there's an achiv (a 'Feats of Strength' one, maybe?) for getting that mount!

So basically i joined the group of people who get stolen in pug raids with Blizzard cooperation.

Sardek was the nickname of that great leader. I've read about people selling OS runs for this mount and selling the mount itself to someone in the raid every week, in wow official forums (yeah, amazing...), maybe it was that case, so if you're reading this do a favor yourself and don't join raids with this guy!

Just got this one today (Mar 2010) and it was pretty easy to do OS 3D for a chance at the mount. Most of the players were ToC and ICC geared and in all, Sarth was downed before the second drake arrived.

I tried giving this drake to a raid member when i was ML but it said 'Player already has too many of that item already.' Does this mean that the player already has the drake and therefore unable to receive anymore. If so i feel very cheated because he claimed he doesn't have it and i was the 2nd highest roller. People in the raid were accusing me of 'ninja-ing' the drake when i wanted to claim it. Rerolled and lost roll to someone else =(.Hope you guys have answers for this thank you

We positioned Sarth in between the opening for the fire wall, facing to the right. BL 10 seconds in, then we just went for it. highest DPS was 6.9K, then I was at 6K myself. Once sarth was down, we had about 4 of us still up, but the adds/drakes took care of us, but not matter :D

Rezzed, then did the rolls. I won the drake, and am very happy with it. :D

Just got my drake tonight. Woot! But anyways zerged it with 5k+ dps and it was a piece of cake. Got all three achv's for having drakes up and got really lucky and won mount roll. I'm a 5k gs warr tank btw, I died at 5% sarth health and dps did the rest from there. First run. Good luck everyone.

Won this tonight on my lock...5600 GS. Rest of the raid was 5500-6100 or so.

Zerg and we downed him without issues. This is becoming a weekly raid for most.

And of all things I won with a roll of 76.... :)

Our group did the pull/invis thing where he respawns after we all get into position. It was easy mode after that.

Easier and easier to get nowadays with ICC gear and such. Keep an eye out for pugs running this. I had the Nightfall achievement on my lock back last October...so thats what got me in the raid.

There is the general way to do it. (10m)
1. Get 8 dps, everyone of them has to be at least 5k dps, class has no matter.
2.Get one good healer (shaman would be the best)
3.Get good geared tank, no matter with class.
4.Just NUKE BOSS and deal with the fire wall and purple circles, and voila! Sart is down before first drake lands, few ppls from the raid might die, but who cares?

At least for me, the drake soars continuously when moving straight forward. Meaning that it will not flap it wings, even if you go straight up. Take that, physics.

Did a guild run last night. Killed Sarth before the 2nd drake joined the fray, and this still dropped. I guess you don't have to do 3D anymore to get it?

I personally earned this achievement back about a year ago, much before cataclysm came out, but last night me and some guildies got a bit bored and decided to do this instance. Our make-up was:

Tank - Feral Druid
Dps - 3 Hunters (2 Surv, 1 MM)
Healer - Holy Paladin

We cleared the trash around the room easily, took a rough estimate of 3 minutes, and then went on to face Sarth. Easy enough, we turned him 90 degrees to the right, his flank facing us, and we popped cooldowns and burned him down. It was basically a 5 man zerg, with only 3 people dpsing, dps was around 10k, 12k, and 14k, so high numbers are not needed but makes it slightly easier. We actually had our paladin glitch and our tank went down, and we ended up kiting Sarth for about 500k, but we still had barely just brought down Tenebron (Drake #2) and Shadron had a good amount of time before descending. We killed Sarth but ended up wiping, with wasn't too bad, considering our healer's UI glitched. So the Reins of the Black Drake did drop, and we made sure no one touched Sarth, because I believe the glitch that if you loot something after people have released or are not in the instance they can not loot the item is still active.

this may sound kinda selfish but in my opinion this mount is too easy to get in cactalysm and i feel that the drop should be nerfed a bit, i remember people in wotlk who does lk25 h who had a difficult time with this achiev, they found 25man easier idk y. Just saying i believe this has become really easy and should be nerfed a bit

I led a 7 man OS3D-10 mount run for five weeks until I got it on the fifth week. Left loot on group loot every time. I solo healed it with 6 dps. If your healer is weak, you can bring a tank and 5 dps.

I've started a 15 man OS3D-25 mount run and did it easily with two healers and 13 dps. I would have solo healed it but none of the healers had a dps spec. Next week I'll try solo healing with 14 dps.

Just completed an OS 3D 10-man zerg with 4 people. Tank didn't hold aggro at all, so it took 3 attempts, but it was done with a hunter doing around 20k and a boomkin at 15k and it took 1 minute, 20 seconds. We all died except for the hunter. We normally do a 6-man zerg each week in about 35 seconds with no deaths, but 2 of those people failed to show up this time. Anyway, I got my black drake, yay!

Got mine last night. Very easy with 5 85's. It is true that you can trade the drake, so if you have it, but a friend wants it, you can still need it and trade it to them. I didnt win the roll for the drake but I did get the bag, which is what he wanted more.

Is it possible to kill Sartharion before the non-mini-boss adds come and massacre you? Or is it better to simply clear the few packs for the sake of safety?

And in terms of numbers, in a 10 man raid group, I estimate that each raid member could have 11k dps to kill Sarth in 30 sec. That's just estimates of the top of my head, but they're probably in the ballpark - hope this can help!

i recently got this drake last nite we only needed me (DK tank) 3dps and a healer

We did this 4 man last night. Our setup was :
Warlock
Ret Paladin
Arcane Mage
Protection Warrior

We had the mage blow Time warp on the pull and when our prot warrior was low we got the ret paladin to use a focus Lay on hands macro to keep him up.
This can easily be done without a healer assuming every DPS is pulling at least 12k +

2manned him as 2 Demo Warlocks poping all our stuff. Mostly FL heroic gear. Probably can even be soloed, gonna try soon after my buddy gets Mount aswell. Was about a 35sec combat.

Four-manned this raid yesterday (10/4/2011) and I was very lucky and happy to have received the Reins of the Black Drake.

About the Mount:
The Black Drake is a great mount in the spirit of the notorious black dragonflight with the drake model. It is not seen as often in game as the 25-man raid Obsidian Sanctum drop, the Twilight Drake, which makes it a very nice and unique mount to parade on in crowded places such as Ogrimmar and Stormwind.

Four-Man Strategy:

I highly recommend the four man strategy as it allows for the party to have a very high chance to receive the mount (25%). You may wipe but just get back up and try again as it is very worth it.

The team composition:
Ranged-dps hunter (me), Paladin tank (probably any tank would suffice), melee DPS warrior, and a shaman healer.

Encounter Overview
Simply beat down the trash before the encounter with Sartharion while leaving the three twilight dragons alone.
The boss fight is a DPS race so blow all of your cool downs on him. Try to pick up a shaman healer for his bloodlust or a hunter and have them use their core-hound for Ancient Hysteria. Best kill him quickly as Sartharion calls down three of twilight dragon generals one at a time (the three twilight dragons you did not kill earlier in the dungeon). While tanking two is viable, tanking the third can overwhelm your tank.

I was easily able to solo the trash as a ilvl 380 DK tank. But unable to kill Sarth on my 3 attempts.... at least the trash dropped 2g 50s ea.

Did this in patch 4.3.

Our raid consisted of:
1 Warrior Tank
1 BM Hunter
1 Ret Paladin
1 Holy Priest

Combined we pulled 47k DPS and we made it easily.

Did it 3man today. Feral druid, Retri, Rogue. We tried to 2man it (Feral, retri) but we only got him down to 600k. still no problem 3manning this raid!

This boss can be 2 manned with all 3 drakes alive at 85 with a combo of; Holy Priest and Feral Druid (tank).
Clear trash but avoid dragons. Engage the boss and then start killing the dragons when they land. I don't think it really matters what order you kill them. By the time the last drake is dead, Sarth will have a shield in which he is immune to 100% of damage, but does more damage to players. This is where things get tricky. The Feral Druid will have to go through the portal and kill the dragonkin; (priest won't have high enough dps to go in, kill the adds and then go out, and find the tank alive). The priest will be taking lots of damage, using fast and big heals, so the tank should kill one, come out and tank Sarth, letting heals get a grip on their health, then go in and kill the other one. There is a chance you will only have to kill one, so make sure you're keeping an eye on the shield. When the shield is down it is pretty much a pew pew situation. Sarth will do more damage at around 500k health. So it would be a good idea to save CD's and pop them around 200k-500k.

Hope this helps for those who are trying to get the mount and title without having to scrape together a group.

This dropped for the 4 of us on 10-man, wasnt a problem at all. Four 85's. Either it got easier or we just had the advantage of the best gear? I dunno.....

As of Phase 2 in Wotlk Classic, this item no longer droppes from Sarth 10p. Instead, the 25p version (Reins of the Twilight Drake) drops here. The Black Drake is likely moved to a drop in a Titan Rune dungeon, but this is not confirmed.
