The Bloodfen Lashtail cave in Dustwallow Marsh is an awesome place to farm if you're the only one there.

At 80 it gets cleared a little too fast. So as someone else said below, you might want to hit The Den of Flame.
You're also really close to Mudsprocket, for Vendor, Inn, Mail and repairs.

NoSmoking is pretty right the raptors are good source of heavy leather and thick leather but in my opinion the dragonkin in the cave just near them is better as u get stack of x2 each heavy leather and thick leather altho u may want heavy leather itll also give u thick leather which u will need after heavy leather so u will b prepared wen ur leatherworking goes up

the BEST spot for Heavy leather is by far the jungle stalkers around the Gurubashi Arena , alot of mobs to kill fast spawn time, even as me killing em whit 1 shot as a lvl 80 hunter

The best thing is to skin everything skinnable once killed.
STV has the mastery q's, and they need you to kill loads of mobs,
something that gives you a good supplie of Heavy leather.
Most mobs in STV are skinnable, and has good spots with packs.
It's a gankers paradice, but if you go as high lvl, you should be good.
else it's some nice exp.
Also, don't take medium leather for granted,
it can be made into heavy leather of you are LW!

I'd say that desolace was great for farming this. There are 21 different mobs that drop this at ~40% - 80% drop rates. the kodo graveyard is a good place to start but almost everything you can skin here has a good chance of giving heavy leather. just ignore the birds if you can since you can't skin them...waste of time to kill them(unless you are low enough level that you have to, I was 60 wheni went thru with my druid).

Fuselight in the Badlands. Neutral billy goats all around, drop heavy and thick leather. They respawn fast enough to provide you with unlimited leather. Nothing dangerous around, so you don't even need to pay attention, and can go afk without worrying about something jumping up and biting you.

If you have or can get this quest Problemi di Silitidi, just keep farming off the silithids outside Desolation Hold (42,68) in Southern Barrens. They spawn 3-6 at a time, and have 201-211 hp, and drop mostly Heavy Leather, and some medium, which can be converted. Just go pick it up, it's the beginning of a chain.

Duskwallow Marsh - Southwestern section where all the raptors are. Very easy to kill, quick respawn time and almost always drop heavy leather. They cover a big section of the map (along with the basilisks), shouldn't have any problem farming.

The dragonkin in the midsection of the zone also drop heavy. Stay clear of northern Duskwallow

Western Plaguelands are better for heavy leather than Eastern. Level 36 beasts are what I look for as they seem to have the best rate for dropping heavy leather rather than medium or thick leather.

I've had great luck farming heavy leather at Feral Scar Vale in Feralas. The yetis found in and around the caves there drop heavy leather almost exclusively (i got just a little bit of thick leather). I was able to farm up 120 heavy leather in about a half an hour with a 50 rogue at this location.

Just farmed Heavy Leather off Bloodfen Raptors in norther Dustwallow Marsh, it was a near 100% droprate for every one. If you are looking for Heavy Leather, these are the best NPC's to get them from outside of dungeons.

Try Jaguero Isle at Stranglethorn Vale. Just work your way all around the island killing gorillas, monkeys and cats. They respawn fast so you can work as fast as you like. Most drop heavy leather, sometimes you'll get medium, but it's easy to convert to heavy so no big deal. The drop rate of Heavy Hide is rather good. Got 3 after 25 or so kills. You will occasionally get Medium Hide as well.

If you are a skinner and want a never-ending supply of heavy leather without having to wait for respawns, go to the Den of Flame in Dustwallow Marsh (39, 65). Clear everything there, including the cave.

Then go to the raptor cave at 32, 65 (west from the Den of Flame). Clear the large dino (Goreclaw) early on as he respawns fairly quickly and you can get him a few times as you clear the area and the cave.

After all the dinos are cleared, go back to the Den of Flame. Rinse and repeat.

Yetis in faralas cave was a GREAT place for heavy leather 95% skinned heavy leather Went through the cave and came out wiht 58 heavy leathers. So far all the IronFur Bears i skinned around Faralas was 100% heavy leather as well.

Rage Scar Yetis in Feralas yielded almost 100% heavy leather. Good rec. Only downer was the heartbreaking violin that started playing as I slaughtered the Yetis with my level 62 Rogue. ...made me feel like I was killing the last of the great American Buffalo... bummer. But got almost three stacks in half an hour!

You can still get these pretty fast if you dont need many of them without being a skinner or without buying from ah - Fish from Waterlogged Wreckage Pools in Western Plaguelands and loot the Iron Bound Trunks. They have about 30% chance to give 2-4 heavy leather. I got 10 in about 20 min.
Not very fast, but good if you don't have skinning and there's no heavy leather in your sever's ah.

I found the wolves and snapjaws in the Hinterlands (all the way on the east coast) to be a good spot, kill all the wolves, run down kill the turtles and back up.

The bears around Chillwind Camp in Western Plaguelands are a good source. Respawn is quick and a couple of circuits should net you a decent amount. There's also a leather trader at the camp so you can farm, produce and sell all day.

For those who are flight point challenged, here is another good spot that is a little more accessible by "public transportation".

Go to Theramore (take the boat from Menethil Harbor) and plot a course for Tabitha's Farm. Then just work the area between there and Mudsprocket. You can kill just about anything that looks like a crocolisk and when those start to get in short supply, you can wander into the Den of Flame and work on dragonkin -- which also drop mageweave which can make you some nice $$$. The dragonkin tend to drop thick though so you should only use them as a diversion while you wait for the crocolisks to respawn. Haven't checked the raptors, but I imagine they're likely the same. That "corner" of Dustwallow is a skinner's dream!

Addendum: Actually, I TAKE THAT BACK! The Den of Flame is an awesome spot to farm. Seems at the speed I go, I clear the inside, clear the outside, and then the inside respawns again. Perfect spot if nobody else is there and at the moment, there's not even anybody else in the ZONE!

Skinning Feral Scar Yetis in SW Feralas (around 51 48, if you have coords) is very good. Thing is they ALWAYS drop an item that begins a quest, so if you don't have the level to do it (like myself) you might need a macro to delete/destroy the item and be able to skin them without having to delete it manually every time.

The Den of Flame and Bloodfen Burrow in Dustwallow Marsh is awesome farming for heavy leather. The Den of Flame and Bloodfen Burrow are just a short walk away, so just jump back and forth while you're waiting for Firemane Scout and/or the Bloodfen Lashtail to re-spawn.

I farmed here for about 15 minutes and came out with:

23 Heavy Leather
9 Raptor Egg
10 Thick Leather
1 Mace (Murphstar of the Monkey)
2 Magewave Cloth
1 Heavy Hide
1 Belt - Mail (Girdle of Golem Strength)

..and a bunch of other stuff along with money. Level 72 Rouge here and I give this location 2 thumbs up! :D

Edit: If you're high enough level like me, just do a pull of the Firemane Scout and/or the Bloodfen Lashtail then skin and say hello to heavy leather!

Every time I try to visit Murhane to purchase either medium hide or heavy leather, he has no reagents for sell. Not sure if I am doing something wrong, but Murhane in my experience does not sell leather working reagents.

I found that in Feralas had a extremely good rate for these. You can circle around the island they're found on and continually skin them, and by the time you make a full loop they're usually back up. Add to that that you're not going to have much if any competition and they're perfect.

I have found that the best place to farm for Heavy Leather is in Razorfen Kraul. It is located in the Southern Barrens at the southern most part of the map. It's easier to farm if you are a high enough level to solo the place. The Boars in the ravine drop heavy, medium leather. and also heavy hides. The bats close to the final boss also drops the same items. The second to to the last boss will drop about 3-4 heavy leathers and one heavy hide. I have found to runs gets me about 5-10 heavy hides and about 40-50 heavy leathers for each run.

DUSTWALLOW MARSH for sure! I went there to farm and an hour later, i haven't even gotten 2 inches away from where i started, Direhorn Post, and i already hv 120 heavy leathers, 5+ heavy hides, 40+ thick leather/thick hide, not to mention the silk, mageweave, and light feather (leatherworking :P) drops! a couple greens also :D The mobs are pretty spread out, but its 100% drop rate. Just run around the area and kill as you go, also swim through the river thingy east of DH post for the lurker guys....

Dustwallow Marsh is by far the best spot... spent an hour there and ended up with 211 heavy leather, 62 thick leather, 2 boe blues and a few greens. Kill everything around the den of flames and stonemaul ruins, including the whelps, crocs and noxious flying thingys (don't remember proper name) as they all drop it!

Make sure you go with relatively spacious bags though otherwise you'll end up stopping every 5-10 min to destroy a load of junk like I did...

I found that i play alliance toons so instead of trying to get to d/m or anywhere in kalimdor, if you go north west of andorhal, but south of felstone fields, u will find a field of bears that are awesome for heavy leather, plus hides and so forth

Just skinned 100 mobs in Western Plaguelands. The area that I ran from was north of The Mender's Stead, south of Redpine Dell, from the Felstone Field in the west to the Cultist camp to the east. I only killed/skinned and Diseased Wolf. This is a rundown of what I skinned:

They also dropped 2 greens (Aurora Cloak and Scorching Wand), plenty of meat, and some Darkmoone Faire quest items. If you're looking to stay in Eastern Kingdoms while farming, this is the place to be. The respawn timer on the mobs is fairly quick, to the point where I would go to one end and they would respawn in the middle.

i started out between bloodfen burrow and den of flame but ended up just circling wyrmbog for the clusters of 3-6 dragonkin and ended up with 55 thick leather 182 heavy leather 5 heavy hides 5 greens and 2 blues in about an hour. I would stick to wrymbog as i never had to wait for respawns just kept going around.

If you are on the Eastern side, just kill the loads of shaggy and diseased black bears on either side of the road just east of the Bulwark in Western Plaguelands. Mob density is very high indeed and I would estimate the heavy leather droprate off of these bears at 80%+ with the remaining dropping more medium than thick leather. The patting alliance fox hunters are also worth killing as their bull mastiff pets also skin heavy, as to the yellow foxes themselves, should you choose to venture that far to the east. I got the 58 heavy leathers I needed on a 40 hunter in about 15 minutes or so, with a little help from the level 23 guild bonus.

IMHO, the mob density here is superior to other locations in the Western Plaguelands and I think the heavy to thick ratio is higher here as well, although this last could be my imagination or luck.

Bonus if you are still leveling cooking. The bears have a high droprate of bear flanks, which are used for two different trainer-taught level 250 cooking recipes so bank them/use them if you are still under 300 cooking.

I usually farm heavy leather in STV off of Elder Mistvale Gorillas. Most of the time there are several people already there killing them and not skinning so I get several stacks within a half hour or so.

Another good place is the Hinterlands off of the wolves just outside of the Alliance fp area.

I am getting a very good drop rate off the raptors up in the north west corner of Dustwallow Marsh, it is most likely that all of that zone would drop well, I don't know, I just started on the raptors and was getting an excellent drop rate so stuck to them.

Heavy Leather is massively overpriced because of Thorium Brotherhood rep, grind this to get cash for your mount.

Hinterlands are great. The place is crawling with wolves and you can skin Heavy leather and Thick leather off them (even Wolfhide i think, and various other rare kinds of hide). In about 3 hours I'd made about 13 golds worth of leather or more. Of course it did help, there was a rogue grinding the wolves as well, leaving all the lovely wolfie corpses for me to skin, god bless her.

Check your AH, and compete. Every sever is different. Mine (MugThol) goes about 3g/stack, as little as 1g on the low end, or 8g on holidays. Just watch the market, like everyone else with a money-minded brain. =)

I strongly sugest STV, i went to Hinterlands first and found that i got more thick leather then heavy leather. In STV i got heavy leather pretty much EVERY kill :) Happy farming!

Crystalvein Mine in STV is the best place to get heavy and thick leather! Power level here for sure. Slow basilisks (crocodiles). Trust me.

The easiest place is spirit den in STV 34.64 for those 39+ & also the silverbacks behind the den (there 42+). Hinterlands is good for 42+ & down the coast where turtles are 49+ they don't attack exept 1, just watch out for horde.

I've found that MPC's around 61,52 in desolace, which are lvl 36-38, have a very good farming rate for heavy leather. I got 1 and a half stacks in around five minutes with a lvl 57 feral druid.

I found that the best place to farm this is the basilisks right near the ramp to go to Gagdetzan. Lots of heavy leathers drop. Hope this helps

I've found the best place to get Heavy Leather is in Tanaris - Just southeast of Gadgetzan (52,34) area.. Both the Starving Blisterpaw's and the Blisterpaw Hyena's have a great skinning rate of getting Heavy Leather.. I've skinned 16 and got 14 Heavy Leather.. Hope this helps!

I'm farming a couple stacks an hour off the Raptors in the north western corner of Dustwallow marsh Cords (49,17) Get mostly heavy leather, occasionally medium, and thick leather and all kinds of hides. Also get a few Large Fangs which sell for a couple gold a piece on Andorhal atleast. Good luck farming

For farming I (Alliance Hunter) prefer the jungle stalker raptors (lvl 40-41) in the area north of Gurubashi Arena.
They are close enough so you dont have to run too far between each kill, some have even young jungle stalkers next to them (lvl 36-37) and you can run around in a circle to get the respawns soon enough.
It is possible to get a stack within 10 minutes.
I take into account also, that raptors drop more white/usable (raptor flesh, raptor hide, raptor egg) items then most other skinable beasts in this area. Basiliks for example drop grey items mostly and gorillas drop fangs and hair which are of no greater use. And I think crocs, tigers and panthers (except shadowmaws occasionaly) are no different.

The raptors in Stv are indeed nice. I'm a 70 rogue and plowed trough the area vest of the gurubashi arena in no time. Even tho I oneshot the mobs, they respawn faster then I can kill em.

I got 114 heavy leather and 34 thick leather in a short time, so the rate is brilliant aswell.

Also got over 50 raptor flesh which is nice for leveling cooking.

Most of the drops stack in 10's. Raptor hides and raptor flesh.

Smooth raptor skin stacks in 5's. But is a grey drop so I just tossed it away.

I find, as a 53 hunter, that if you go to the Kodo Graveyard south of Nigel's Point, they drop heavy leather about 85% of the time with a few medium leathers thrown in there. They also rez really quick, and I even got 3 green items. They also drop a ton of Kodo meat for my pet, but I had so much after an hour I sold it. I'd say you can get 60-80 leathers in an hour...I'm thinking about a little over 1 Kodo a minute.

O.K., I did it again (lvl 53 hunter w/pet) & here's what I got from the Kodo Graveyard in an hour & 10 min....

89 heavy leather...(stacks of 20 are goin at auction for 3g 50s)

26 medium leather...stacks of this (20) are goin for 10g right now and Im not sure why...I'm underselling for 5 since the market's weird.

41 heavy Kodo Meat... (45s, 92c)

50 thick Kodo Hair... (28s, 70c each stack of 10)so...that would be 1G and 50 Silver? I can't add here. It's a nice chunk of change tho.

13 dirty Kodo scales... (21s 6c)

I found a great place for farming heavy and thick leather. Crystalvein mine in STV from the Basilisks. They drop heavy leather a little more often, but if you're leveling leatherworking like me, you need both of them anyway. The respawn rate isn't bad either. It's just north of Gurubashi Arena.

ok i had a real easy time in shimmering flats in about 15 minutes i had 2 stacks of heavy leather and 1 stack of thick leather the turtles and scorpids there drop it fairly often however do not go near the border because the turtles there on ly drop medium leather but go there

Drop rate is around: 90% Heavy Leather, 5% Heavy Hide, 5% Thick.

Go to badlands, anywhere from 10,63 to 40,63. Wolves and Tigers drop mostly heavy leather, thick leather everyonce in awhile. Animals are pretty close together so you can pull 3-4 and get them. They are about lvl 45-49.

I've found that it's very farmable off the Mountain Yetis and Giant Yetis in the Alterac Mountains. Bonuses:

1. They drop money instead of trash items that you have to constantly chuck away.
2. Heavy Leather drop rate is high.
3. Thick concentration.
4. Drops medium leather if it does drop high (about 25% or 33% of the time), so you can combine it up.
5. Lower level mobs than the Badlands mobs to farm the same from.

Places of note for farming:

Bloodfen raptors, especially their little cave in Dustwallow: thick as can be, and if you're remotely slow about killing them you'll never run out as they respawn so nicely.

Badlands cats/dogs, although you have to actually walk from one to the next and they have a nasty habit of hitting you with a minor disease.

The yeti mentioned by Syrae are probably your best bet.

I found an awesome spot for farming heavy leather in Stranglethorn. Just midway between Grom'gol base camp and the Mosh'Ogg ogre mound, between the river and the road there are a ton of gorillas with a very decent respawn rate. They're all 37 or above so you won't get anything less than heavy leather. I spent a couple of hours there and came away with 6 stacks of heavy and 1 stack of thick, plus a few hides and a few gold's worth of greys. There's also a few lower level snapjaws around too if you run out of things to kill - they tend to drop medium more often, but you'll get a nice amount of tender crocolisk meat for cooking or selling.

Despite my comment in this same thread back in 2012 recommending WPL, this time I didn't feel like going to EK so I relied upon the yeti caves in Feralas instead. Of the two, Feral Scar and Rage Scar, I definitely preferred Rage Scar as there are more yetis. Even at 80+, I could not outkill the respawn rate if I killed all the yetis inside and outside. Unlike in past expansions, yetis now drop cloth as well so you will mostly just get cash and silk cloth as well as a smaller amount of mageweave and not a lot of vendor crap to otherwise fill your bags. The mobs skin about 75% heavy and 25% thick. I did not get any thick hides at all but got a fair number of heavy hides, which are currently a really good money maker in the AH.

I will also add that, at least for horde, there is a leatherworking and skinning trainer in Feralas as well (Camp Mojache).

I spent a couple of days evaluating all the farming methods mentioned here on wowhead for all eight leather types in cataclysm. The methods I had the most success with, skins per hour wise, were the following:

Light leather
Marsh Crocolisks (southern Silverpine Forest)
660 light leathers per hour
Also drops: medium leather, light hide, medium hide

Medium leather
Black Dragon Whelps (southwest Stonetalon Mountains)
624 medium leathers per hour
Also drops: heavy leather, medium hide, heavy hide

Heavy leather
Uldaman backdoor. Pull the three packs of scorpids and the various beasts in between
474 heavy leathers per hour
Also drops: plenty of medium and thick leather, heavy medium and thick hide

Thick leather
Nyxondra's broodlings (northwest Badlands)
537 thick leathers per hour
Also drops: rugged leather, thick hide

Rugged leather
Gordok Mastiffs (Dire Maul N). Pull the hounds in the pit and the ones just at the start of the second room
894 rugged leathers per hour
Also drops: thick leather, rugged hide

Knothide leather
Razorthorn Ravagers (mountains on the border between Terokkar and Hellfire Peninsula)
738 knothide leathers per hour

Borean leather
Stoic Mammoths, Jormungars (southeast Storm Peaks). Kill the two packs of mammoths, clear the outside and inside of the cave, repeat
513 borean leathers per hour
Also drops: jormungar scale, arctic fur

Savage leather
Baradin Crocolisks (west Tol Barad) Best to do on times when other players are around for extra free skins
567 savage leather per hour
