Updated for 4.1 mostly, some data on specific new boss values to be added. Edit - I won't be updating this for future content due to no longer playing WoW. However long this remains accurate though I hope it helps you reach that 100k achievement, good luck!

Easiest way to get this is raid farming in your spare time for those classes capable of soloing, for those who aren't pairing up as a healer+dps should work, however remember your gold totals will be halved due to two people getting an equal share of the gold. To avoid this simply have one person leave the instance if they aren't working toward the achievement and loot after they're gone.

For vanilla content MC/AQ20 and AQ40 (at least to Huhuran solo) aren't great cash cows for this but they help.

BWL is another potential money market, but you may need help clearing the first boss (and possibly the second) before taking on the rest yourself, again maybe needing help at Chromaggus. Nefarian is worth 200g + alone, the other bosses are roughly between 100 and 150.

Karazhan is no longer worth running, the bosses drop a mere 5g each, your time is best spent elsewhere..

TBC 25 man bosses (excluding Magtheridon and Gruul's Lairs respectivly as all 3 encounters have been nerfed.) drop 250g each with end bosses dropping 300g.

Also worth looting the trash, they drop on average 1g each, including large AE packs such as the Elves leading up to Solarian in Tempest Keep, infact if you've the stomach for it, farming Solarian trash repeatedly before finally putting her over will net you a tidy sum.

Small amounts of Wrath 10 man raid content is soloable, and fair amounts can be done as a healer/dps team, each boss is roughly around the 100g mark, excluding Flame Leviathan who along with the above notes has also had a gold nerf.

Wrath heroics yield poor boss drops but good trash money if you can solo it, most trash is worth 1g per mob. In places with large amounts of trash such as Ahn'Kahet this is a time filler if you find yourself out of content to clear.

Other than raiding anything that gives a bag for cash counts toward looting. This includes the Argent Tournament champion purses as well as the bags for doing the Algalon key quest chain, the satchel from Sartharion, Tiny Titanium Lockbox from the Dalaran Fishing Daily and Bag of Fishing Treasures from the Shattrath fishing daily, and any of the Wrath rarespawns that drop the Abandoned Adventurer's Satchel.

What I haven't yet tested is if this works with the tiny treasure boxes you get from the Potion of Treasure Finding. Will update accordingly with results once tested.

Good luck to anyone else going for this. As to the discussion on a title I agree something at 100k would be nice. I hope they add a 250k later this expansion and a subsequent 500k/1 million in the expansion after, with a Millionaire title for the latter.

Raiding is the fastest way to earn this achievement. You get gold that counts towards this achievement not only from what you loot, but from what people in your party/raid loot as well. So although of course Cataclysm raids would be best, LK, BC and Classic raids also work. Some outdoor raid bosses are good to farm for this as well. Some 5 man dungeons are okay, especially on heroic. And obviously, the fewer people you bring, the more gold for everyone.

Basically, it's a tossup about whether you want to do higher-level content with a bigger group or do lower-level content with a smaller group (and perhaps even solo it.) It's up to you to pick the content you want to do and with how many people. There's a lot of raids and dungeons in the game to choose from.

Just make sure you and your party/raid members are looting every corpse! It often happens in raids, especially large ones, that members don't loot their corpses. A corpse will have sparkles if there are items to be rolled on there, and the person that loots will be able to loot the gold and view the roll-able items; any other non-rolling items will be hidden and only lootable by the person the loot is assigned to. This means if a corpse has no roll-able items, only the person who is assigned to loot it can get the gold (which would get split to everyone and count towards achievements.) If they don't loot it, no one gets it!

Raid bosses always have the most gold, (All these bosses are worth 100g or more!), but the constant looting of trash along the way definitely contributes to the achievement. While I always run my raids on the 'need before greed' setting, perhaps changing the loot to 'free for all' for trash would help make sure every corpse gets looted, since you can then loot them all yourself if you have to.

You can actually make a fair bit of gold this way, as long as you don't fail and wipe a lot. Between vendoring all the epics you don't need (or disenchanting and putting mats on AH), selling the occasional desired BoE on the AH, and all the gold you get as you loot along the way, I made more gold than I thought I would. Doing 'old raids' is a way to make money after you've done your dailies every day, and it's usually a little more interesting than simply farming. Some rings and staffs and 2 handed weapons from LK raids can vendor for up to 20-30 gold a pop! Still, there's much faster ways to simply make gold, except that most of them don't count for this achievement. If this achievement is what you want, get raiding. =P

You can work towards this achievement by:
Looting cash from monsters yourself. (Vendoring grays or other items does not count.)
Looting cash from openable items that create a loot window. (Here's some worth 1 gold or more a pop.)
Looting cash from enemy player corpses in battlegrounds.
Receiving cash from when a raid/party member loots cash from monsters.
Pickpocketing cash from monsters if you're a Rogue.

The gold amounts on the following encounters have been substantially reduced: Flame Leviathan, Magtheridon, Gruul the Dragonkiller, Doom Lord Kazzak, and all encounters in Karazhan.

I actually find that farming TBC heroics is a great money spinner. I'm in the process of farming TBC reps while doing other inconsequential things, and I got something like 2k, maybe 2.5, in a week. This was just the initial zerg rushes for Outland Dungeon Hero too. Once the rep farming sets in, you really can rake the gold in. It may not be as high as 500g from Maggie, or whatever, but you can bag yourself some good achievements on the way :)

Achievement completed: 19-4-2011 @ 10:20 as Retribution Paladin

Got the 50.000g achievement 22-2-2011 and since then I was aiming for the 100k one. Started exploring all the raids and such at start, but ending up getting 10k gold looted in one week. Some of the raids I soloed, because I could. If not I went with my Blood DK friend and 2 manned the rest of the instances. Here is the list I have been farming for the past 2 months:

AQ20 (180g per run, 360g - 540g per week) - solo
AQ40 (up to emperor, 300g per run) - solo
ZA (4 chest run 500g per run, 1k - 1.5k per week) - solo
Maggy (500g per run) - solo
MC (400g per run, since a lot of bosses don't drop gold at all :/) - solo
Karazhan (400g per run, up to chess event) - solo
MGT (50g per run, killed and looted all mobs) - solo
TK (750g (3/4), couldn't kill Kael alone so asked for help and 3 manned that one for the mount. Total of 850g looted) - solo

Naxx10 (2 (12 bosses, 900g) or 3 people (15 bosses, 725g)) - 2/3 man
Ulduar10 (700g per run, full clear) - 3 man
BWL (600g per run) - 2 man
EoE (80g per run) - 2 man
VoA (400g per run) - 2 man
SSC (500g per run) - 2 man
MH (650g per run) - 2 man
Gruul's (250g per run) - 2 man

I never saw Doomwalker/Doom Lord Kazzak (maybe due to I am on a very high populated server), but if I did know their respawn time I would have gotten around 2 - 3k more gold per week.

Also remember that you get 300g per week from raiding BWD, ToFW and BoT (if you go 12/12, or 325g if you kill 13/13). I did ZA 2 to 3 times a week, same goes for AQ20 (long live 3 days reset). Like I said in the beginning I havn't been hardcore farming this achievement for long. Started with 4k gold looted per week and builded it up to 9 - 10k per week by clearing every instance I could.

I really enjoyed doing this achievement and the closer you get the more instances you want to do thus the more gold looted per week you get. I also wanted to get this achievement before Patch 4.1, since they are going to remove the gold mine ZA, Maggy, Gruul's and Karazhan. I still think it will be easy to get after 4.1, but a bit harder since those 4 instances they nerfed give around 2k per week.

Happy farming and going for 1M achievement if it comes out :)

Aside from raiding old content with fewer than the "recommended" amount of people, an easy way to tally up your looted gold total gradually is by looting bags.

The best reliable, daily source I've found is in Northrend, and you can work on more than one achievement at once.

First, download the addons _NPCScan and _NPCScan.Overlay. Then, go to Northrend. Fly to the Argent Tournament grounds (assuming you didn't use an Argent Crusader's Tabard) to get there. If you are not yet a Champion, you may have to complete that effort first, which will take a few days. Once you are a Champion, the core daily quests open up. Complete the four daily quests (Alliance/horde links) Threat From Above), Taking Battle To The Enemy, Battle Before The Citadel, and Among The Champions.

Upon completion of each of these daily quests, select the Champion's Purse as your reward. Contained within is 10 gold and a Champion's Seal. The 10 gold count toward this achievement.

The daily quests count toward 1,000 Daily Quests Complete, and also count toward the 2,500 Daily Quests Complete version that will be introduced in patch 4.1. The Champion Seals can be used toward purchasing any of the 14 available mounts or 7 companion pets, the latter of which will have a 100 and 125 companion pet version that will also be introduced in patch 4.1.

Once you are done there, if you have time, fly around some of the zones of Northrend, checking spawn locations (as outlined on the _NPCScan.Overlay map overlay). Each Northrend rare elite has an Abandoned Adventurer's Satchel containing 20 Frostweave Cloth, possibly 3-5 Crystallized essences of a random element, a blue-quality item, and somewhere between 15 and 25 gold, which also counts toward Got My Mind On My Money. The rare elites you kill can earn you yet another achievement (Northern Exposure) or two (Frostbitten) if you have yet to complete those.

So, if you find yourself without a raid group, or you've done all relevant raids you want to do and have time left over, consider this another potential avenue for making achievement progress.

based on the average wealth of each boss, each week a hunter can get:

1280 from BWL (razorgore is soloable, as shown by certain youtube videos; i don't remember the drake bosses dropping gold but i wasn't paying too close attention and wowhead says they do, this may or may not be accurate.)
180 from AQ 10
310 from AQ 40 (killing all bosses before twins except viscidus)
~340 from MC
1000/1250 from SSC (i haven't been able to kill hydross, but i haven't tried too hard and i hear others have)
750/1000 from TK (again, haven't killed kael'thas myself, but others have)
500 from CoT:Hyjal
~332 from naxx (only killing sapph and noth, i haven't tried anything else)

totals out to 4692 or 5192 if you can kill the two bosses i mentioned i couldn't. it's definitely time consuming, but it'll line your pockets and burn through this achievement comparatively quickly. and keep in mind, this is only counting raid bosses, not heroics or trash.

Don't forget Elementium Lockbox. It contains about 30 gold average and there is also a chance there will be another lockbox inside it (and maybe another one in that, my record is 5). So if you are a rogue, have a profession which can open them (Blacksmithing Key, Engineering Charge if they still work) or a friendly rogue this is definitely a nice way to get some more golds to the achievement.

As a Hunter, here is the list of raids I currently farm since 4.1 solo. These can all be done with low to medium difficulty.

Classic:

Molten Core (10/10) 320g
Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj (6/6) 180g
Ahn'Qiraj (4/9 clearing up to Twins, skipping optional bosses) 260g

TBC:

WotLK:

Naxxramas (4/15 clearing Sapphiron and The Plague Quarter) 650g
Vault of Archavon (1/4 clearing Archavon only) 190g

Total Gold: 3650g

All excluded bosses are generally not worth the effort. Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj Can be done 2x a week for an additional 180g. Blackwing Lair is skipped because while Razorgore the Untamed is soloable, it is difficult to do and is cheating.

This takes me between 4.5 to 5 hours to complete. The only trash I kill are the ones in boss rooms and/or linked to a boss. Otherwise, it's all skipped using Camouflage and Feign Death.

Satchel Of Exotic Mysteries generally drops between 40 and 60 gold a hit, for me anyway, but has been known to sometimes drop more than 100 gold! Clearly a nice boost for anyone trying to get this when you consider it's from an Heroic dungeon anyway, so you should be getting a fair amount of looted gold alongside it too.

Best way to grind this is to buy ~~eternium~~ elementium lockboxes if you have a supplier.
Another way is to AOE farm Moroes trash and reset.

~~But if you are not in a hurry, don't stress yourself too much, running AQ20, SSC, BWL and specific bosses in MC will get you there soon enough.~~
Edit: Running those raids are no longer as effective because of the nerf in gold drop to 10gold per boss.

Apart from old raids (except for Magtheridon, Gruul and maybe a few others I believe most of them still drop a fair amount of gold), consider the following bags:

Satchel from Northrend rare mobs - pretty easy to find these while flying through Northrend nowadays (not like it used to be back when I farmed Frostbitten in Wrath :S). The bags don't bind and can be mailed, contain around 20-30g I believe.

Champion's purse from Argent dailies - back in Wrath this was my chief money-maker and the most reliable way to get gold "loots". Got my 50k achievement primarily from this. Certain pets still AH for a respectable amount (particularly if you are selling cross-faction, server population ratio permitting) so you can make a fair bit of gold on the side as well. Limit of 4 per day (you can do the other dailies for more seals if you want but only the bags count for the achievement of course).

Dungeon bag from the Call to Arms - the only reliable spammable source of bag gold. Roll a tank alt for this if the toon you want the achievement on can't (or won't) tank. Many factors influence whether Zandalari or normal heroics will net you more bags per hour so I suspect that will vary realm to realm, time to time (however I believe the system tries to queue you with other people of similar gear so gearing up should improve your speed, on average). I also suspect bag spamming will be better come 4.3 when the two queues are unified (it will be less repetitive at least :P).

The bags are account bound, I recommend opening them carefully to extract the gold in case there is a BOP item which you may want to transfer to another toon (they bind as soon as they are looted from the bag but while inside you can mail the bag to your alts). There are many side benefits to grinding this achievement through dungeon bags, the bags occasionally contain flasks and potions which you can sell or use, and of course pets of various rarity and value (some of which still go for a lot on the AH). Also do not underestimate the gold you get from the dungeon itself, it's not much but it adds up. Vendoring items or selling enchanting mats is also a lucrative bonus to doing this (consider taking enchanting on the tank you use if possible). Currently enchant mats from blues and greens sell for quite a lot due to most of the population grinding Zandalaris where most drops are purple (greatly devaluing maelstroms), this is a very lucrative niche market which will likely dry up in 4.3 when the queues are united.

Of course, if you're super serial about the achievement I recommend all of the above plus whatever raids you can solo/2-3man :)

As mage it's clear we don't have same soloing power that hunter or DK but fear not we can collect fairly good amount of weekly gold too. This is what I've managed to kill this week (first week of really trying) as 396 PVE ilvl mage without legendary staff, using either normal 3/35/3 fire spec or 2/8/31 PVP frost spec with impact.

Vanilla:

Molten Core - 350-450 g - Easy to run even as fire. Equip your Spell penetration neck, some of bosses have fire resistance.
AQ20- 180g/run 3 day reset - Very easy, just overrun it as fire. Full clear takes about ~15min. Use spell pene on Ossirian the Unscarred.
AQ40 - 250g+ - Medium difficulty.
1. The Prophet Skeram to avoid mind control dismiss your Water Elemental he casts interrupt all the time so just Ice Lance spam.
2. Battleguard Sartura Easy both specs.
3. Fankriss the Unyielding Also easy both specs.
4. Bug Trio Go frost and kill Princess Yauj first because she got Great Heal
5. Princess Huhuran Killable as fire prepot+TW+mirrors and ~350k combustion and some luck resisting silence.
6. Ouro Probably also killable,but you gotta get past twins to get there.
7. Rest are most likely unsoloable as mage.

TBC

Karazhan - 4g - Easy Attumen the Huntsman kill for the mount!
Tempest Keep - 500g-750g - Easy, Easy, Impossible, Hard.
1. Al'ar Easy. Go frost, Time Warp at start, Ice Block the Flame Buffet away after second platform and you should be able to finish him off before 4th. Phase 2 is cake just keep absorbs up and kill the damn bird.
2. High Astromancer Solarian Easy. Did it as fire but frost will do too. Just TW her down with Mirror Image and remember to Blink down when you are shot into air.
3. Void Reaver Impossible (for me atleast). Tried ~10 times both fire and frost best shot I had was 30% during the mirrors as fire but after that I got silenced to death by Arcane Orb.
4. Kael'thas Sunstrider Very much doable but hard. Search for videos from youtube all kills I found were done by arcane mages but I got into Phase 4 fairly easy as fire and as frost, have to come back for this too.
Serpentshrine Cavern - 750g - 3 easy/medium ones.
1. Hydross the Unstable Did this fire specced, TW at start but don't mirror right away he hits very low before Mark of Hydross goes up to 100%. At 100% debuff marker mirror and run away from him so when he comes back to you he goes into poison mode and resets the debuff. Aoe the 4 small elemental he spawns and finish him off.
2. The Lurker Below Go frost you need the Ice Barrier. TW at start you can mirror at start but I waited for while so he got all my absorbs on CD and popped mirrors then. Should be fairly easy to get into Phase 2 where you Polymorph one of melee adds kill rest adds, Evocation heal and bandage yourself back to 100% before killing the sheeped add. Finishing him of is easy as long you remember to avoid Spout by diving into water. Diving into inner circle of the big platform is preferable.
3. Leotheras the Blind Pretty easy as frost, just dps and keep your absorbs up when he goes into Demon mode and starts throwing you with Chaos Blast Ice Block the debuff when you feel like it does too much damage and finish him off.
4. Fathom-Lord Karathress Thought I'd Combustionlol him and his minions down but turned out that I got owned instead. Just way too much damage and no ability to control your character.
5. Morogrim Tidewalker Best try I had was 34% as frost, not really a hard fight but too much damage to absorb (give me some god damn heals).
6. Lady Vashj Mirror up and you should be able to finish Phase 1 with 100% hp left any given spec, but Phase 2 will be terrifying chaos since there is no time to kill all the elementals, nagas and striders AND collect 4 Tainted Core before the damage will overwhelm you. Best try I had was 2/4 cores.

WotLK

Archavon the Stone Watcher - 200g -Pretty straight forward and not too hard, kill him before he kills you. He only have like 2M hp I downed him as fire.

That makes total of ~2250g assuming you clear AQ20 twice and only kill 2 bosses from The Eye as solo.
There is probably some more WotLK bosses I can kill when I get to it atleast in naxx10 maybe Sartharion.

You can also get a friend and easily:

Clear rest 3 bosses from SSC for (250+250+300)/2=400g
Kill atleast Void Reaver for 250/2=125g
Clear BWL for ~1200/2=600g
Kill Onyxia for 100/2= 50g (Can also be soloed if you spec for it and have gear and fortitude to practice the fight)

=1175g extra for very little effort.

Almost all TBC/WotLK raids I didn't list up are also easy to do with 3-4 player. Sunwell Plateau might be very profitable if it can be 3-4 manned (I don't know since I haven't tried but I believe it shouldn't be too hard) seeing it drops 1850g altogether.

I've been playing my druid lately, doing literally a crapton of heroics (When the satchel is available ofc) and some dailies. The gold you get from satchels ranges from about 40g to 100g, so thats a good chunk added to your counter. After just two months, i believe i looted like 10k gold... stuff ramps up really quick.

As a paladin i can get a lot of money.Here is the list:
AQ20 - solo - 175-220g (3 day reset)
AQ40 5/9 - solo - 300g+
MC - solo - 350-400g
BWL - 2 man - 600-650g
Karazhan - solo - 5-10g(looting everything up to atument,u can clear also the adds b4 moroes for another 30-40g)
SSC 4/6 - solo - ~1100g (clearing and looting the adds before leotheras and morogrim)
TK 3/4 - solo - 900g (clearing everything excluding KT)
MH - 2 man - 650g (u can solo it for the full 1300g but flying adds and first boss are annoying)
BT - 3 man - ~800g(loot killed adds as much as possible)
SWP - 5man - 370g
Naxxramas 8/15 - solo - 1250g(plague,spider quarters sapph and KT)
OS10 - solo - 200g(u need help at one of the drakes and the boss drops a bag which gives 40-50g)
EoE - 2 man - 80g(or 160g if u can solo it)
VoA 1/4 - solo - 170-190g
Ulduar 2/14 - solo - 350g (kill Ignis and FL +1 tower)
Shaterred Halls HC - 50-60g(can be done 1 time a day and it takes ~20 mins to clear everything)
Total: 7350g-7680g or even 7525-7900g if u do AQ20 3 times a week.
Any other raid is not worth the effort.Also when u are in-game check dungeons for the bag it gives 30-100g gem,pot/elixir,pet or even mount.Champion purses will give u 40g per day also u have a chance to find a rare
which gives a bag for 15-25g.If u are a Scribe you can do forged documents which gives another 10-30g.
Elementium lockboxes also contains 20-50g each.

Unfortunately I am in the mid 30k range on two toons and 20s on another two from switching mains a few times. Has anyone seen if this is going to be one of those account wide achievements that is combined like honor kills in MoP?

Most of my gold was from either progression raids or grinding old content for mounts/legendaries/boredom.

I have NOT achieved this myself (Yet) but there is many ways in which you can do this.

NOTE: Please forgive how long this post is but i wish to get as much down for you all to read as possible. I apologise also for any missing item/zone/npc names but the tooltip should still show if you hover over it.

One which other people have stated here quite frequently, raids. Old ones at that!

Few which i have done personally as a warlock solo are as follows:

Serpentshrine Cavern 4/6:

Hydross the Unstable - 250g
The Lurker Below - 250g
Leotheras the Blind - 250g
Morogrim Tidewalker - 250g

So a total of 1000g a week of Serpentshrine cavern.
The trash mobs alone give a good amount of gold too at around 1g per mob.
Couldn't Solo Fathom-Lord Karathress because of Cataclysmic Bolt.
And as for Lady Vashj, well... lets just say it got a tad overwhelming with adds!

Molten Core 10/10:

This is not the greatest gold maker, however, ever little helps and you can go for Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker or even Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros provided you have the right "Stuff".

Your looking at about 300 - 400g per visit not to mention rep with Hydraxian Waterlords.
This is without vendor items or Blood of the Mountain Which net a tidy sum on the AH. (Currently 1200g each on Ravenholdt EU)

Hyjal Summit - 4/5 Sadly:

Rage Winterchill - 250G
Anetheron - 250G
Kaz'rogal - 250G
Azgalor - 250G

Could not seem to get Archimonde down although i was tired at the time!
However i got a second person in and netted 125G from it.

Tempest Keep 3/4 (Yes im not one of those absurd people who have claimed to have solo'ed Kael'Thas).

Void Reaver - 250G nice and easy.
Al'ar - 250G This one can be annoying.
High Astromancer Solarian - 250G, She throws you up into the air and can occasionally cause instant death. Fortunately I have Demonic Circle: Teleport! :)

Once again trash are your friends and drop a healthy amount of gold at 1G per (Roughly).

Black Temple I have NOT attempted a solo on this yet but will update when i have done so.
Bosses do drop 250G each and would be nice to test a clear run of this. I have a feeling i won't get too far on this one. Mobs in the Black temple drop about a gold per mob and EPIC GEMS which do vendor for a fair bit.

As stated previously but many others there is NO point in doing the other raids for this achievement as the bosses drop a pathetic amount of gold. I believe gruuls drops 25g a boss and Maggy drops like 49G.

Ahn'Qiraj can be solo'ed up to twins and each boss drops 50-80G each and wil net you about 400G from all sources.

Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj 5/6 All except Thork.
This is not the greatest amount of gold either but is worth it if you heading to temple anyway. You will get 20-40g per boss and will net you a total of about 300G from all sources.

People have stated that they can solo bosses in wrath and to be honest there is not much point as it can be very time consuming i spent an hour on Sapphiron in Naxxramas only to get 160G from him.

If you do go to the Wrath raids do it on 25 man with as little amount of people as possible.

Archavon the Stone Watcher is an easy solo and gives you about 150G not to mention a chance at Grand Black War Mammoth!

Now onto non raid stuff!

Elementium Lockbox - I buy these at 50g each as it contain gold which adds to your achievement and a chance at another Elementium Lockbox being inside the Elementium Lockbox! Which has another chance of having a Elementium Lockbox inside the... You get the point.. You get around 20-50g per box and it all adds up! You will also commonly (Almost 99% of the time) get a green to vendor or DE.

Potion of Treasure Finding - These are good but are even better if you know where to use them! This item gives a chance at looting Tiny Treasure Chest from mobs of cataclysm and inside is 3-5g per box and 75% chance at some Embersilk Cloth or Cata ore. and 25% chance to contain some volatiles! Great money making too! Note i have tested this and the best place to farm the chests is at STONEHEARTH IN DEEPHOLM you will see alot of dwarves fighting alot of troggs. AoE those troggs down and begin to loot them i receive about 1 box every 3-5 kills and about 20 Embersilk off the loot every 5-8 kills the Troggs drop a mere 20-80 silver but it all adds up. These potions last for 1 hour each and are easy to make! See Potion of Treasure Finding for materials needed to make them.

Now if you have a tank or a healer you can alternatively do dungeons on call to arms and get yourselves Satchel of Exotic Mysteries which contains 60-100g per bag and a chance as some awesome pets and mounts too!

Champion's Purse can be obtained from dailies at the argent tournament which contain 10G which adds to the achievement. You could also use the spare champion's seals to buy some BoE pets ans sell them on the AH for a couple of thousand each.

One of the things i have been doing recently is The Forge of Souls and Pit of Saron you get about 1g per mob and you can also get Battered Hilt. PLEASE NOTE YOU MUST DO THIS ONE HEROIC FOR THE Battered Hilt.

I'm sorry for the long post and i hope this helps put things into perspective for people.

I haven't seen this posted yet, but this npc drops 50-99 gold, and has a respawn timer of roughly 6 minutes 30 seconds. I would average around 700 looted per hour killing this guy, sometimes more sometimes less. This is by far the most reliable and fastest way to get this achievement..

Ok so this may only be a drop in the well as far as gold goes, but it is still money. If you are farming the insane title (as I am) and keep getting all of these heavy lock boxes, the gold contained in them does count towards your total. I had been looting them on my rogue looking for epics and recipes but I will now loot them on my main to go after just a little more gold.

I have not seen a recent guide on what a DK is capable of doing. I have composed a list of how you can earn approx. 12k per week. My ilvl is 397 and I do all old stuff in blood spec with dps gear on. You do have to recruit a partner to help on a limited amount of stuff. Feel free to check on my profile on Wow-armory for my spec/gear information.

Tempest Keep (4/4) 1050g
1. Kael'thas Sunstrider - Pull the first two npc's to the back, kill Grand Astromancer back by kt. When they all res pop armry, ghoul, and ams to destroy Grand Astromancer Capernian as quick as possible. Also I've noticed that when gravity lapse happens it rarely works correctly, you can try hitting space bar, I use my parachute cloak which then allows me to start floating as intended
Serpentshrine Cavern (5/6) 1250g
1. Hydross the Unstable - Fairly easy fight but you need to move him back when Mark of Hydross gets to 100% so he switches to poison or water.
2. Lady Vashj - May be possible but I wiped a few times and moved on
Black Temple (9/9) 1500g
1. You need a partner for at least two boss's High Warlord Naj'entus and Reliquary of the Lost the rest can be solo'd with minimal effort
Hyjal Summit (5/5) 1300g

WotLK:

Vault of Archavon (3/4) 525g
Malygos 160g
1. If your having trouble with the traditional rotation try 1 1 1 2 3 3 3 (Very effective and I am able to one shot him always)
OS10 225G
1. Shandron Need to have a partner to kill or it will just reset if no one goes to the shadow realm. Make sure to loot all mini boss's as they drop 15g
Naxxramas (15/15) 2150g
1. Patchwerk - Hits like a tank, may want to add more tank gear for fight
2. Gluth Heals like crazy, if your dps is high enough just keep him stationary and dps him down
Ulduar (8/14) 1650g
1. May be possible to do more, I will update later. So far I have solo'd: Flame Leviathan, Ignis the Furnace Master, Razorscale, XT-002 Deconstructor, Kologarn, Auriaya, freya plus her elders drop 150gp a piece, hodir.

Total = aproxx. 12200

I did not bother to loot most of the mobs, I do realize you need a partner for some of the boss's but once you past them you can solo the rest of the zone. With approx 6 more weeks until mop it would be possible to take in approx 75k towards the achievement. Good luck farming!~

This will also be one of the achievements that is cumulative across all of your characters. Meaning, ALL of the gold you loot on ALL of your characters is supposed to count towards this, same as honor kills, etc. This is different than other achievements that you must complete entirely on one character to get credit towards a larger meta achievement, such as "What a long strange trip".
