Disengage will have its functionality changed in WotLK. It will cause the hunter to leap backwards up to 13 yards and has a 30 second cooldown. This should be handy for helping hunters avoid getting stuck in melee.

Disengage isn't supposed to remove snares. We do want it to move you the same distance whether snared or not, but that takes new code, so it will take a little while. We did recently lower the mana cost from 14% (I think) to 5%. It is off the GCD now.

To respond to mmeckruabe, this is actually perfect, and btw, have you seen a hunter get attacked by an arcane Mage, or a rogue or a melee class, or to make it clearer, any class with a snare ability?
Disengage is a real improvement over the previous NOTHING that it did, jumping such and such yards back is a great PvP/ PvE asset. After you've trapped a monster, and you don't want to feign deth(because healer will get aggro from heals, die and then the tank will die) all you have to do is face your back to a secluded are, wing clip, and disengage.
As the mob you trapped is slowly coming toward you, all you have to do is kite him, and put on concussive shot if wing clip's duration is over, and just wait off the trap, freezing arrows cooldown, to CC the mob again.
The PvP implications are so obvious, way better way of getting a melee off our backs w/o having to use a trap, feigning or LoSing him.

Also note that if you jump as you cast this (compensating for lag) you can get a significant boost to the distance that you jump backwards, very useful for PVP when you're in close with melee classes.

I wish to question the "10 yd range," as on my hunter I was max distance (no talent range increase) and I used this and it pushed me out of range of fire.

This spell is -INCREDIBLY- useful, especially in World PvP - If you get ganked while there are a group of mobs on you, just Feign + Disengage. This + Master's Call should prove a decent addition to any hunter's arsenal :3

Was changed recently ( Not sure which patch ). It no longer requires a target ( Which means you CAN use it as a backwards blink ), but you have to be in combat to use it.

How far this ability will throw you backwards is highly dependent on the terrain you are on. If you are on a hillside with your back facing up the hill (looking down it) then the ability throws you back a good 3 inches rendering it completely useless. However, if your back is facing down the hill and you use it you can be thrown out far enough to fly a good 50-60 yards which is super fun to do when getting ganked or in world PVP (you will take fall damage tho and that = durability hit if you die). The 10 yard range is on flat ground with no obstacles in the way. I do not believe you have to be facing an enemy to use this so it could be used in PVE when you need to group up on a boss or spread out quickly. This is a great ability... I laugh out loud every time i use it. Thank you Blizzard.

The range is indefinite, it just applies to the physics (Gravity and such) of the game. So really, there
is
a range, but it isn't a predetermined one. I imagine if some sort of falling impairment item was used, the hunter would be able to go much farther.

Extremely useful when combined with either slow fall or parachute cloak/flexweave underlay.
I would like to know the exact speed of this spell "shoots" you, but it is somewhere between 150-200% mount speed.
Tested in Arathi Basin, with parachute it was great escaping from Lumber mill. Landed almost at the Blacksmith's graveyard.

Disengage really is an awesome ability, just to be blunt.
Using almost just it alone, I've screwed over more than 15 Flag Carriers in Warsong Gulch just by performing what I call "The Hunter Double-Jump".
I've also come up with a few tricks as well, which I'll list here.
The Hunter Double-Jump
This is my favourite of all the tricks that I use, and is quite simple to pull off.
1. Jump off the edge of a cliff or towards the target you're trying to catch up to, facing towards the target/area you're trying to get to. Jumping allows you to increase the distance you can possibly travel. Also make sure you're in combat first and that there's no hostile Non-Death Grip Cooldown Death Knights around (as they can pull you back to them mid-jump - THIS WILL SCREW YOU OVER).
3. Turn around while in mid-air so that your back is now facing the area/target you're trying to catch up to. The best way to do this is to firstly use your left hand mouse button, turn around with it, hold it down and tap your right hand mouse button at the same time.
4. Right after you've turned around, hit Disengage and watch as you soar over both friend and foe alike, leaving them stupefied as you either catch up or land in front of your enemy, Wing Clip him, Trap him, etc.etc. As far as I know, you can pop a few instant shots at any targets in front of you as you soar.
The Hunter Butterfly Stroke
This, like the Hunter Double-Jump is quite easy to execute, although it require a tad bit more timing. Essentially, it can only be used for travelling reasonably large distances while at the surface of the water, but it most likely beats swimming.
1. To start, remember to be in combat, as always. And also avoid the Death Knights mentioned above. Also make sure your back is towards the are you want to get to. Firstly, press Disengage.
2. You may be wondering
why
I say press it first. This is because the moment after you press it, you need to jump. From my experience, Disengage seems to have a short "cast time" of about a second before it takes place, so then, once you jump up after pressing Disengage, it should kick in just as you're above water, giving you the same speed and distance benefits as the label says, allowing you to travel over water for a short distance.
And lastly,
The Hunter Parachute
I found out this while in Gnomeregan trying to get my Hydrocane. I'm not going to list any steps here, because it is simply a Hunter Double-Jump, only with perhaps a delay between Steps 3 and 4.
From what I know, Disengage actually reduces all of the extra damage you take from falling down a long distance to zero and then uses the falling point where Disengage took effect as a new starting point for falling. Remember, only use this as a last-ditch resort, and make sure you're in combat. If you can pull it off properly (Provided that my theorycraft is correct), you should be able to land safely after falling from long drops without losing any health where other players would've died.
Well, there's me :D I'd like to see a video of a Hunter using Rocket Boots off a really, really high cliff and a Mage casting Slow Fall on him and seeing how far he gets. :D

I wasn't able to add to one of the comments in my first post (as I thought I had passed 7.5K characters), but I was wondering - if a Hunter gets Slow Fall and uses Disengage, is it possible that he will go at the said "150%-200% Mount Speed" all the way, or will he slow down at some point?
Oh, and the last bit of my comment, by the way, should be put more specficially.
"I'd like to see a video where a Hunter (with High-Level Engineering) uses Rocket Boots to use the Hunter Double-Jump(See my first post) with Slow Fall cast on him over a really, really long and deep fall (I'd say top of Storm Peaks, perhaps), who also has a Flexweave Underlay attached to a Parachute Cloak (if a combination is possible) to use just in case if the Slow Fall wears off and see how far he gets."

Blink for hunters.
Simply jump and use the mouse to twist your character in the air to disengage in any direction you'd like. Also ensures you don't clip the terrain and come to a screeching halt.
Any hunter worth his or her salt should find this an easy and obvious extention of their jump shot/kiting skills.

I used disengage on one of the cliffs in Thousand needles.
Ouch.
As it made things better, I had allready suffered a fall down death thanks to a duel vs a priest who mc'ed me off the cliff ;__;

As a nightelf, you can also use this to buy you some time such as waiting on a short cool down and such during pvp. Simple just scatter shot a person really fast, and as you disengage right away man the shadowmeld racial which will likely shield you from the enemy's view of you for a few moment until you can reengage again.
Often time when you get far away enough and disengage you will be out of the screen already by the time the enemy is adjusting their screen to face you. If you're quick enough, a fast shadowmeld will cause the enemy to wander around a bit, buying you some time.

If you are an Engineer, this spell has unlimited potential.
If you are carrying a flag in Warsong Gulch, and enemies are coming, just Disengage+Parachute Cloak!
Works best if you are in top of the entrance to the tunnel. I've seen hunters leap almost halfway across the field.
In Arathi Basin, just jump off the Mill! Do various emotes at the attackers as you shoot across the sky and waft gently down on your cloak.

They should increase the actual height you jump when you use it. I've been in several circumstances where the slightest of incline in the ground features can cut your Disengage to almost nothing. Beware of using this when the ground behind you is slightly higher.

This is a very useful skill. Not only can you use it to gain distance on an opponent (as is its most obvious use), but can be used to close the distance between you and a fleeing opponent (as has been stated - for example, catching the flag runner in Warsong Gulch).
Something that hasn't been stated though, is that you can use this in conjunction with
Readiness
to use it twice in a row. Obviously this should only be used in situations where fleeing is an option and necessary (Warsong Gulch yet again, anyone?), as Readiness boasts other uses.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

This is in the running for my favorite WoW spell to date.
Aside from being wildly useful to hunters, it's fun as hell. With the right terrain and a good angle, you can spring up onto ledges and continue sniping your enemies from your makeshift eagle's nest. Mob downhill, fast approaching your spot on top of said hill? whip around backwards and spring down the hill - bam! you're behind the mob and 25 yards away. And that goes double for PvP.
Fun and useful, the hallmark of a good spell.

Took me forever to figure it out, but when you use disengage when falling, it takes the position of where you used disengage as the new height of the fall.
Meaning you can use disengage to survive long drops while in combat (av bridge, ab mill) and kill players who've gone afk on their flying mounts high in the air; just pop deterrence before you hit the ground.

This. Any hunter worth his salt will kite a Death Knight until he uses Death Grip, before using Disengage.
Also, if you time it right, you can Disengage when you're at the apex of the Death Grip arc, and easily travel two to three times the distance from where you were originally standing.

While this ability can protect you from fall damage you'd normally take as a result of getting knocked off a cliff by a player or NPC's knockback, it can also keep you from getting knocked off a cliff in the first place, as it resets your momentum, meaning if you disengage quickly enough, you can move yourself back to safety.
It also allows you to safely pass over ground targeted AoEs.

Since some sites list the glyph for this spell as a Hunter must-have, I thought I'd look here and see what the big deal is. And all I see are comments about its usefulness in PvP, which is great but not very handy for me as I don't PvP.
So... are there any decent PvE uses for this spell? I'm a BM Hunter and as I reached lvl 37 I have yet to use this ability. I never get sucked into melee, because either my pet or the tank keeps the mobs at bay. And while it's probably fun to have a backwards blink available, I fail to see why I should glyph it. Or use it, for that matter.

This is currently untested by ME, but I believe you can cut the cooldown of disengage to TWO seconds. Simply get the Glyph of Disengage, specialize as a Beast Mastery Hunter, max the talent Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera, and as soon as you can access other talent trees, go for maxed out Survival Tactics. Instantly, your cooldown is reduced to 16 seconds. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera then allows a 4 second reduction to the disengage cooldown, on a 2 second cooldown itself. This can basically reduce your disengage cooldown to 2 seconds, if meleed; that is, between global cooldowns and how quick the enemy is. You can make nice macro from

. Because Wing clip does not activate cooldown you can immediately cast Disengage after it. So the macro would be.

Now you can slow down your enemys and get away from them at the same time.

It's like the priest's Fade move. It works best if you're in a party and there are others present to take the aggro. The move

Ya, it's true, disengage and throw a freeze trap...
Now for me, my technique is...
while pet and character are attacking enemy, disengage,
set freeze trap + set pet to passive!
aspect of cheetah,
run max distance while still in ranged weapon range,
use Aimed shot,
pet attack again,
concussive shot,
serpent sting,
arcane shot,
by this stage hopefully they'll be dead, or start your melee attacks...
That probably seems hectic, but if you're used to fighting this sorta style, it'll make alot of sense to you...
Hope this helps the newer ones that are just learning these skills :D

this ability was made for when you are in a group or soloing and take to much argo at once. So when you are soloing u out argo the pet which happens offten use this and the NPC gos back to beating ur pet. Now in an instance hunters are time to time will argo a guy of the tank all u need to do i have pet growl at him and use Disengage this will normaly take agro off of u and on ur pet and hopfuly not to the healer. Hope this clears things up with some people.

with this pre Feign Death people can get away from wipes if they are NE, just befor your group wipes, use this, then Shadowmeld with pet stayed in the spot it is.
just an idea.
edit: im not sure if this works, i tried in soloing, but pet was still in combat, so it was a no-go. im gonna try tonight when i have the time to see if it works in groups.

I've used this spell and after disengaging, it did not allow me to set a trap (freeze or immolation). Aren't you supposed to be able to set a trap? Did I do something wrong?

Well, rogues are a ^&*!@. But Scatter shot, Feign death, Frost trap, run away, pet attacks with Intimidation while U do Aimed shot, Concussive shot, Multiple shot and Serpent sting to DOT him so he cant Vanish. This should make him regret attacking U...

the ppl that were talking about disengage and placing a freeze trap are wrong. The only way you can place a freeze trap when you started battle with a mob is FD then place the trap (if your pet is on the mob's hate list then this doesnt work). PVP however will work if your pet is not targeted by the enemy and no longer in battle with them then u can FD and trap. Anyways... Disengage doesnt work like that guys, it only reduces threat and stops the auto attack that u have with the mob. If what you guys say was correct then you could scattershot someone and place a trap (which u cant cuz scattershot doesnt remove you from the mob's hate list if anything it makes them hate you more). No pet out... then FD place trap then your good. NOT DISENGAGE.

its basically the same ability as feint for rogues, simply for hunters instead. can be used if you pull agro in an instance by a small margin and you dont want to use FD or to get agro back to your pet.

I actually use this a fair deal on my hunter. Counts as a melee ability, so %60 off mana cost with survival talents. If I pull aggro off my pet, I will try to joust through mob with raptor strike, disengage, and wingclip. Snares target, does a decent amount of damage, and reduces threat in one blow. This can also help set off weapon procs like icy enchant for a double snare, as it counts as a normal swing. Additionally, it does not break ice trap. I'd be curious to know whether it could be used with misdirection to remove aggro.
