Heres a nice little route I have in Uldum

I find it a bit easier to farm than Deepholm as there are less people around farming there.

Thats 31 uncommon gems and 119 uncommon which gives a total of 150 oddly enough. Pretty even numbers :) This gives an average of exactly 1.5 gems per prospect. (Excuse my math if I messed up somewhere)

Your best bet inorder to find a load amount of Elementium in only one area without a need to go anywhere is in Twilight Highlands, down at Elementium Depths, where you fight Magmatooth once again. A single run into the deepest part got me a good stack, and if not, the remaining ores left to make up the twenty ores would be replaced by Pyrium.
So get to the cave, and farm your ass off while you still can.

Crunching numbers on the data provided by users for Obsidium Ore and Elementium Ore:
For the purpose of prospecting,
-obsidium provides roughly ~1.7 more uncommon gems per stack
-elementium provides roughly 0.7 more rare gems per stack
This means that for obsidium ore to be preferentially prospected, average selling price of a rare gem should be roughly <2.4x the average selling price of the uncommon gem (R:U ratio <2.4). If this inequality does not hold on your server's economy (R:U >2.4), then elementium should be preferentially prospected. The assumption is that the selling prices of obsidium and elementium approach equality.
On my server, the R:U is about 2.0. Couple with the fact that uncommons sell far quicker due to the advantage of supplying the rares market via transmutation, demand from freshly-geared 85's as well as JC dailies. Also, obsidium tends to be listed 10-20% lower than elementium on the AH. (R:U threshold rises to ~2.8)
For most intents and purposes, JC's wishing to harvest ore for gems should consider prospecting obsidium and selling elementium. Your results may vary.

Still pretty worth to buy off the AH to prospect. Actually on Hakkar orde it's at ~70-80g per stack.
Bought ten stacks, prospected (total 40 prospects) and got:
blue gems:
Amberjewel x4 ~ 20g each, 80g total
Ember Topaz x3 ~ 45g each, 135g total
Dream Emerald x2 ~ 35g each, 70g total
Ocean Sapphire x2 ~ 40g each, 80g total
Inferno Ruby x1 ~ 90g
uncommon gems:
Alicite 6x ~16g each, 96g total
Hessonite 4x ~ 30g each, 120g total
Jasper 5x ~ 60g each, 300g total (today high due to jewelcrafing dailies)
Zephyrite 8x ~ 20g each, 160g total
Carnelian 11x ~ 16g each, 176g total
Nightstone 7x ~50g each, 350g total. (High due to previous daily quest.)
Off rare gems, I got about 455g. Out of uncommon ones, 1202g. Total 1657gold, considering a 5% cut on the AH we're at 1574g. having paid raw materials 700g, that's about 874g on my side before crafts.
jewelcrafting is still a valuable thing in cata.

I was finding it rather lucrative to farm these in Twilight Highlands. A nice path through the river up around Grim Batol. I was finding four and five nodes of Pyrite clustered together around the gates of Grim Batol along with six or so nodes of Elementium Ore just between the two gates. Unfortunately due to the phasing of the zone when you begin the chain
it changed the phasing. Now I can see all the nodes on my mini map and visually but when I get close to mining distance they all disappear.

For the lore side of this, this ore is not native to Azeroth. This ore is actually from the elemental plane of earth known and
Deepholm. Before the shattering it was a very rare thing to have as the stone mother therazane would not allow the ore to go beyond her realm. After Deathwing broke out of Deepholm during the cataclysm elementim became more readily Avalible on the surface of Azeroth.

Prospecting these and vendoring the gems are probably one of the best ways to make gold right now (till 4.1 when green gems dont vendor for 9g each anymore). These are the stats I got from buying a ton of ore today and prospecting:

Cost of Ore: 1960g (40g each)
Amount of green(quality) gems: 211
Amount of green gems extra: 15

Interestingly, high on the Ember Topaz and low on the Hessonite, but not a clear high on the green quality or a low on the blue quality. The overall drops seem to be down 2% on greens and 15% on the blues. Also, the 80/20 green/blue distribution seems to have been adjusted to 82/18; looks like they're doing some supply side adjustments.

We know we get between 1 and 3 gems each time we prospect (between uncommon and rare gems).
I'm interested in the distribution of this.
This is the data I have.
382 times prospected (1910 ores).
1 uncommon: 265 times (69.37%)
1 uncommon, 1 rare: 79 times (20.68%)
2 uncommon: 29 times (7.59%)
1 uncommon, 2 rare: 3 times (0.79%)
2 uncommon, 1 rare: 6 times (1.57%)
I didn't get any of the other possible outcomes (e.g. a lonely rare gem).
If anyone else has data separated in these categories I'd appreciate it.

is the amount of gold u get with the Green Gems that u get per 1x prospecting.
2. The rare (blue) Gems:
Price/Aberjewel * 0,048 + Price/Demonseye * 0,04 + Price/Dream Emerald * 0,056 + Price/Ember Topaz * 0,055 + Price/Inferno Ruby * 0,047 + Price/Ocean Sapphire * 0,041 =

And if (

Here is a route I use to get elementium ore in Uldum:
http://www.guitarstars.biz/WOW/
Its sorta like the route on isle of quel danis for adamantite ore.
Not any mobs at all really. (Im 85 and have done about 75 uldum quests)
There is about 2 nodes south, 2 west, 1 north going into the opening
and 2 east. I follow the little ridge on the east side away from the main mountain.
I say they respawn about every 5-7 minutes except for the north one which
takes longer. Check it out!

I am a JC/Transmute Alchemist, so I bought 25 stacks of elementium and saw what my profit would be if I transmuted all of my greens into blue gems.
I ended up with the following amount of blues:
12 Amberjewel
13 Inferno Ruby
13 Ember Topaz
11 Dream Emerald
11 Demonseye
11 Ocean Sapphire
(this is pretty close to the number people are getting above, plus the proc rate on transmuting gems)
On my server, it cost me ~300g for the herbs to transmute and I bought all 25 stacks of elementium ore from some fool for 36g each (900g). So, I spent 1,200g.
I sold the following (I cut ones where the cuts sold for more than the uncut gem):
12 Amberjewel x 35g each
13 Bold or Delicate Inferno Ruby x 180g each
13 Ember Topaz x 60g each
11 Dream Emerald x 15g each
11 Demonseye (the intel+haste one) x 45g each
11 Ocean Sapphire x 20g each
When its all added up, I made 4,420g. That is a
3,220g profit
. Pretty sick for like an hour of work.

Best place I've found to farm this ( - especially if JJHilly's path through Uldum is overrun) is the Elementium Depths caves in Twilight Highlands. Unfortunately, it's overladen with mobs, so being a stealth unit has its perks. The nodes spawn faster than I can stealth through the caves.

367 Stacks of
源质矿石
367 stacks = 1468 total prospects
Base Percentages
Amount of uncommon gems: 1799 (122.6%)
Amount of rare gems: 428 (29.2%)
122.6% + 29.2% = 151.8%
This means that there is a high chance of getting a double proc from a prospect (~52%).
Individual Percentages
Percentages are based on the number of gems received to the number of prospects done (1468). Rare gems are separate in their own percentages compared to the number of prospects.
Example:
1468 prospects yields 296 uncommon red gems
296/1468 equals out to 20.2% of the total amount of gems compared to the number of prospects.
Red Gems:
296
红玉髓
= 20.2%
75
地狱炎石
= 5.11%
Orange:
291
桂榴石
= 19.8%
76

Yellow:

阿里锡黄晶
= 20.9%
56
琥珀晶石
= 3.8%
Green:

67
梦境翡翠

Blue:

78
海洋青玉

Purple:

Extra note: if your realm has a high price for enchanting materials, and you have an Enchanter, make sure to convert your uncommon red gems into Carnelian Spikes (a very high chance of getting 2-3 Greater Celestial Essences per Carnelian Spike disenchanted). Same can go for Jasper and Alicite, although the formers will yield more Hypnotic Dust than Lessers or Greaters.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I found the best places to mine for was in Deepholme and Tol Barad. You can mine the Gyreworms in Deepholme and have chance to get extra ore, and you might even stumble upon some Pyrite if you're lucky in Tol Barad :)

The unique properties of elementium allow it to absorb and channel elemental forces. Skilled smiths temper elementium in blistering forges, adding to the quality of the item. All such objects are masterwork quality and are immune to cold, fire and electricity damage. Elementium is the hardest known metal. Elementium is
so heavy that to craft armor from it would leave the wearer virtually immobile
, so the metal is usually only used to craft weapons. Elementium has no market price. It's too rare to be available. It's not something you buy-it's something you go get.

The Elementium Depths in Twilight Highlands is one of the best places to get a consistent supply of Elementium and pyrite ore. Not to many people usually there and the enemies aren't to bad to deal with. U should be able to average a full bag of E. Ore in less than a few hours of mining with some pyrite to boot. =D

There is a place called
Elementium Depths
in
Twilight Highlands
, I found about 100-120 elementium and 20 pyrite ores in there, it's a cave and there are lots of elementium and pyrite ores in there, it's the best place for farming elementium ores.
Seems like the ore veins don't spawn as often (if at all) in this place anymore, which kinda makes my comment irrelevant.

The name Elementium Depths speaks for it self. I was able to make a good 20-30 ores from just clearing it (took about 15 minutes). I find it easier to farm here than to run around in Uldum where there are more people and the nodes are more spread out, so if you're like me, head over to Elementium Depths in south-western Twilight Highlands.
