There are four named beasts throughout the Barrens that drop quest-starting items. All of the quests are turned in at Jorn Skyseer in Camp Taurajo.

Here's a consolidated list:
Washte Pawne - red wind serpent (wandering Blackthorn Ridge for me)
Owatanka - blue thunder lizard directly south of Camp Taurajo
Lakota'mani - grey kodo (46,49 for me, typically wanders east of Agama'gor)
The Harvester - blue/black silithid insect (found toward the back of the western Field of Giants area)

The Silithid Harvester is a rare, as shown by the silver dragon around its portrait. It was found on the western side of the Field of Giants all the way in the southwestern corner.

The Harvester's Head will drop for everyone in the group.
It does not look like any other silithid here, and will stand out.
It is not tied to the death of any other silithid.

I found him by simply parking my death knight there and using a "/target Silithid Harvester" macro while doing other quests in the Southern Barrens early in the morning while no one else was around.

Seems like this guy takes forever to spawn. As above, easiest way to probably do it is later on in the levels (28 is about comfortable) and just park there, checking every so often to see when the Harvester spawns.

Not sure about the respawns I just saw that I missed 2 this guy and Lako and decided to snag them, spent 5 minutes looking for Lako went south to harvester wasnt even there 10 seconds and I spotted him got really lucky I guess.

Same as above, we got lucky and found him while we were chasing Washte Pawn, he wasnt up the first time, then when we came back he was there.

There is NO permanent stat buff. This is strictly EXP. All of these mobs are non-elite.

Unless things have changed (and the quests are not repeatable so I have no means to verify) there is a +2 SPI permanent stat boost for completing one of the four quests. I noticed this on one of my characters and verified it while leveling an alt, but both were years ago (which is also why I don't recall which one gives the stat boost).

Something I did which really made this much easier for me was download a mod called npcscan that I was already using for Frostbitten and Bloody Rare and add each of the rare mobs that would drop quest items. I was flying to Tanaris and npcscan went off so after I finished my quest I flew back and killed it without running out there to check every so often. The mod itself basically eliminates a /target macro so you have to get in range of it but once you click the pop up notification it will target and mark the mob with a triangle.

He has more than one spawn location. I found him in the middle of the mounds on the EAST side of the Southern Gold Road. You need to check all the mounds, not just the rear on the west side. He is an easy kill when found, just watchout for the nearby adds.

This quest can be found when you kill a Sithlid Harvester (silver elite) in the Field of Giants. The Harvester drops it's head as loot, which starts this quest.

It's kind of a short quest though. You just turn the head into Jorn and get 2400 XP (at yellow difficulty).

This quest is a complete waste of time, unless you happen to get lucky and the rare spawn happens to be up then ok, but other then that, forget this quest and just do the other 3, i walked around the sithlid area for like 2 hours and never found him, the exp isnt worth the time.

This is a rare spawn.Unlike the other unique beasts he rarely spawns at the sillithid hives.
Tried killing him with a lvl 22 rogue and was almost there-that bastard spawns adds that defend him and heals himself to full health.Had to vanish and run for my life.
If you see him,then go ahead and kill him.But dont camp him,hes not worth the time or XP.

I did all 4 today for the 100th time. Figured I would compile this information. There is NO permanent stat buff nor is there a follow-up reward like the quest in Ashenvale. This is strictly EXP. All of these are fairly easy and are non-elite.

In order of rarity:
Owatanka ~48,59

He might have a pretty broad spawn range. As of today he was at the above location. This guy only seems a *tad* more rare than Owatanka. Large gray kodo that is not aggressive.

Washte Pawne ~45,74 to 44,78

Coords vary from where I have seen him; above to within the boar area. He’s about 50/50 on being there, so you might have to come back later. Larger, red version of a Thunderhawk.

The Harvester ~48,70

Spawns little guys, so if you're not an AOE class you need to DPS him down fast. This is one of the few that I have not finished on ALL of my characters, as he is rather rare. Check in the field to the east every time you pass by... it's a small area / not a huge detour. The mob NOW looks like a beetle (unique to zone); the above screenshot is pre-TBC.

Ok... I created an account just to post on this...

Firstly, thanx to 'FindecanoArnatuile' for giving the info which enabled me to complete these quests and compile this little helper...

I think that the 4 named creatures in the barrens create a challenging and welcome break to the usual grind that is known as the barrens... I've read a dozen people talk about how it is not worth it to camp blah, blah blah...

I found that you can kill all 4 in about an hour, and that it can be a nice compliment to the questing/grinding you are doing at the time, or the extra 10,000 xp required to get those new spells... here is my advice... Take an hour out of your time and do the following (in order of difficulty (i had no problem finding them)):

1. Head to 49,56. You will found a whole bunch of kodo's wondering around... Owatanka is the big blue one... I used a simple macro to find him (/tar owa) and spammed it...

2. From there i headed towards 46,50... again i used a simple macro (/tar Lakota) and spammed it... please note that the guy a few posts above me misspelt his name (Lokato'Mani is wrong, it is Lakato'Mani), this caused me much grief...

3. I headed south towards 44,77... i was actually looking for the siliphid harvester but ran into washte pawne... if you're having trouble, make the standard macro (/tar washte) and spam it...

I found it very easy to solo each of these first 3 guys with my level 24 priest...

4. Headed W/NW to 48,69... This guy is hard (He is a rare spawn, non elite), he constantly pop's out level 24 minions which heal him to full health... you must DPS him hard and fast... As a priest i had to attempt this maybe 4 or 5 times (I'm sure people will flame me with 'OMG WTF noob! i solo'd this at level x! (etc)'... i don't care... congratulations)... The macro would be /tar silithid harvester...

I found this mob particularly interesting (amusing)... He looks suspicously similar to other blizzard creations (lol) and provides an interesting option (or joke) to warcraft lore...

Note that he is just 'level 24' where most mobs are 'level 24 beast' or 'level 24 humanoid', he has no 'type'...

I then ran to Jorn at Camp Taurajo and handed all 4 in...

And no, there is no permanent increase in any stats...

Getting up early in the morning worked out nicely for me. It's easy to spot because it doesn't look anything like the scorpids in the area (44.71-ish). It looks more like a spider, only with six legs. I found it by standing on the road between the two sites and using my Eye of Kilrogg to scout out the area. He was a little way east of the road. Easy to take down, he's only level 24, rare, but not elite. I got 2,400 experience and 350 reputation with Thunder Bluff at level 29 for this quest. As it's rare, its respawn rate could be anything like two hours, five hours, or even more. Good luck!

I spent about 5 hours grinding till I found him, was just wanting to complete all quests in the barrens. I found him by the tree in the western area. He doesn't seem to move from the place he is in, I mean kinda he's not a pat, but it seems that he can spawn anywhere in the fields of giants.

Found him on my mage at the posted 44,70 spot. On my druid several days later I didn't see him, figured he wasn't there since he is "rare" but decided to look around the field of giants a little anyway. I found him at 48,70 (other side of the road) so it is worth looking around a bit if you are having rouble.

Also, this is listed as starting with Jorn Skyseer, but it is actually an "item start" quest where you have to get the "Harvester's Head" and click on it to start the quest. You turn in at Jorn in Camp Taurajo.

I checked back for this NPC many times over the course of two hours while grinding in the area. It never appeared. I would not advise waiting around for it to spawn -- not worth the time.

I've not seen this mob once during the classic era and have levelled all my toons through the Barrens. The others are always easy to find. Pretty sure they took him out of the game, either that or his respawn time is crazy. Either way not worth going out of your way to look for him.

Spawns exactly at 42.86 70.44 (Spawned there twice now in SoD), does have a 2-12h spawn timer. I waited 3 hours.

Useful stuff to find him more easily:
- Get the addon RareScanner and change the sound to something annoying
- Go into your audio settings and turn on background sound
- Get the Weakaura wago.io/Ytq7BFq-7 and use this ID: 3253. It allows you to create a macro to spam while watching something and once you target the mob around you it will make an Air Horn sound.
- possible macro: /tar Silithid Harvester
