I know this is very late in Phase 6, but a few tips that really helped get this done relatively quickly.

I was a level 51 Fire Mage. This allowed for fast kills.
I made sure that I had world buffs and consumables to help (used Elixir of Firepower, Arcane Elixir, Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer, Sayge's Dark Fortune of Damage and Spirit of Zandalar)
From my experience, I found it was much quicker getting "Acceptable" samples from mobs that were in the deep south of Tanaris. Don't waste time killing the lower level mobs near Gadgetzan.

I had all my hyena and basilisk samples done before I got my first scorpid. This is what led me to head deeper south for higher level scorpids. Completed the scorpid portion very quickly after the change in tactic. Being level 51 and buffed definitely helped.

Don't bother doing this quest, went through a stack of 30 samples and only 2 of them were acceptable, wasted an hour of my life, I just abandoned this idiotic quest

terrible convertion (or whatever it is) rate. got more than 100 untested samples and couldn't get all accaptable samples

I seemed to have a 1 in 3 success rate between Gadgetzan and Sandsorrow Watch to the west.
To the Southeast, I seemed to have more success when testing a Hyena before either of the others.

Also, the 3 mods appear to share spawn points around Gadgetzan, so kill one type to get the other types to respawn.

Remember that this is a timed quest. You have 2 hours to complete it and 1 hour on your acceptable samples.

Also any extra samples will disappear in time : up to 1 hour for acceptable samples and 2 hours for untested samples. You can delete any extra of both when you have handed in the quest.

Did that quest as a 47 disco priest, and finished it under an hour.
Grinding the mobs south of Gadgetzan (pretty much green) filled 25% of my xp bar, which is huge. Plus the end xp on both quest, and a flat total of 2g on trash to vendor, it's a decent quest. - Put aside that grinding can be really frustrating on these samples.

A little tip: although it's completely doable within the time limit, if you wanna minmax or if you feel unlucky (or both) drag each of the sample on your bar so you don't need to rummage through your bags every time :)

First - In case you miss it, this is a timed quest.

Also, my luck stinks so your results may vary but if I had to do this over again, 100% I would have first purchased a Field Testing Kit from Alessandro (Undercity /way #1458 58.6 55.2) before starting the grind. I thought I could just bring a bunch of untested samples (15-20) to Undercity and be fine getting at least 8 of each... WRONG. The rate in which these turn into Acceptable Samples is super low especially for the Basilisks which were about 1 out of 10.

Acquire untested samples for 8 basilisks, 8 hyenas, and 8 scorpions. Bring the testing kit back to Chief Engineer Bilgewhizzle in Gadgetzan before the power source runs out.
