Part of the Horde questline for the Wrath Gate event. This quest line is very long and spans the entire length of Dragonblight. Quite honestly, I consider this one of the most important quest lines (thus far) in Wrath. A must-do for any hordeling. :)

In quite a few of these chains there are optional prequests. I will not list these, despite them being in the quest series list, because they are just that: Optional. I will list the LATEST quest available that will start the chain, or the one most likely to pick up while completing other parts of this chain.

Additionally, these quests are Horde Only. I, unfortunately, do not have an Alliance character on the Beta, so I do not have access to any alliance quests. Sorry!

Step names are purely flavor. They generalize what that part of the chain leads up to/is about.

I highly urge everyone to read the quest text. This quest line is quite possibly one of the most epic in Warcraft history and is highly worth the time. Lore lovers and haters alike should enjoy them.

The quest text currently tells you to take a portal back to Orgrimmar, but there is no portal. Maybe Saurfang is thinking of the zeppelin, and has just taken a few too many blows to the head?

Ya I was definitely confused about this as well. Found absolutely no portal. Guess this is something they plan to implement later.

When you return to Orgrimmar to report to Thrall you will find that all shops and services in the city have been shut down. A small group of dissatisfied citizens (including Gamon) have gathered in front of the bank complaining about the situation to Overlord Runthak. Here is part of the conversation as it might take place:

Innkeeper Gryshka says: When can we reopen our shops? I'm losing gold here!
Olvia says: Where is the Warchief?
Felika says: What is going on?
Auctioneer Thathung says: What is going on?
Sana says: We demand answers!
Innkeeper Gryshka says: This is an outrage!
Kaja says: Why is Thrall allowing this to happen to our city?
Felika says: This is an outrage!
Olvia says: What are all these Forsaken doing here?
Overlord Runthak yells: SILENCE!
Overolrd Runthak says: We are on the brink of all out war with the Alliance!
Overlord Runthak says: Tragic events have unfolded in Northrend. The Warchief is doing all that he can to keep us safe.
Overlord Runthak says: All services and shops are to remain closed until further notice! That is all!

You will also find several groups of forsaken refugees scattered around the city in makeshift camps.

Heh. All the shops are closed, but oddly the banks are still open. Goes to show that even in times of war, monetary transactions are still priority.

Besides the bank, the flight master is still operational. If you have just leveled and there is a trainer for your class in Thunder Bluff, you can fly there, train, and then fly back.

Another nice touch - all the signposts in the city have disappeared, like what happens in a country that is about to be invaded to confuse the enemy force.

For anyone who is simply curious, the flight paths do still work. Also the zepplins outside of Orgrimmar are also operational. Durotar itself is phased with Forsaken Refugees scattered about the area. If you feel like looking around, as I did the second time i came to this quest, you can take the Zepplin to Undercity to find it still at war. I highly suggest not trying to get inside unless you are a decently geared level 80, or have some friends with you, if grouping that is even possible.

As of Patch 3.2, there is a new addition to this quest:

When you are sent by Sourfang to Orgrimmar, a scripted event occurs when you speak with Thrall. A "wave" animation accompanies a Stormwind mage portal appearing, the Korkron guard rush to the portal, Thrall calls them back and Jaina Proudmoore appears. The following dialogue then occurs, and all the lines are fully voice acted (and the voice actress for Sylvanas sounds very slightly different then usual);

Thrall says: Kor'kron, stand down!
Thrall says: Jaina...
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Thrall, what has happened? The King is preparing for war...
Thrall says: Jaina, what happened at the Wrath Gate. It was a betrayal from within...
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Lady Proudmoore, the Warchief speaks the truth. This subterfuge was set in motion by Varimathras and Grand Apothecary Putress. It was not the Horde's doing.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: As the combined Horde and Alliance forces began their assault upon the Wrath Gate, an uprising broke out in the Undercity. Varimathras and hordes of his demonic brethren attacked. Hundreds of my people were slain in the coup. I barely managed to escape with my life.
Thrall says: The Horde has lost the Undercity.
Thrall says: We now prepare to lay siege to the city and bring the perpetrators of this unforgivable crime to justice.
Thrall says: If we are forced into a conflict, the Lich King will destroy our divided forces in Northrend.
Thrall says: We will make this right, Jaina. Tell your king all that you have learned here.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: I will deliver this information to King Wrynn, Thrall, but...
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Bolvar was like a brother to him. In the King's absence, Bolvar kept the Alliance united. He found strength for our people in our darkest hours. He watched over Anduin, raising him as his own.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: I fear that the rage will consume him, Thrall. I remain hopeful that reason will prevail, but we must prepare for the worst... for war.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Farewell, Warchief. I pray that the next time we meet it will be as allies.
Thrall says: Kor'kron, prepare transport to the Undercity.

Note that as of this moment, this event will replay every time you start talking to Thrall.

Edit: Actually, it appears to be activated by walking up to Thrall's raised area, you don't actually have to speak with him to start it. Once you've turned in Herald of War (and the portals to Undercity have opened) the event no longer triggers.

It's also worth noting that the zeppelin tower for Northrend at Org is completely abandoned. Apparently nobody is in a rush to get back. =p

However, I'm pretty sure the one at UC is still going...

I recommend that everyone run around and explore everything affected by the phasing during the quest just to get the most out of it.

If you port away from Orgrimar during this quest you can just head back to Orgrimar and it will be in your quest phase.

I'm not sure if it was me being a bit of an idiot, but I'll throw out this warning anyway.
I decided to check out UC, what with the whole "Whatever you do, don't goto UC" thing. Everything there is a hostile 74-75 elite, but you get a buff which basically stops you from dying. You heal like 12k every second.
It's fun to kill everything and all, but I couldn't get back out. The lifts are broken, when you enter you get a buff to stop you dying when you fall down the shaft.

So yeah, just a warning, you might have to hearth out, and you don't get XP or loot from killing anything.

Just found an interesting bug. People mounted on their Traveler's Tundra Mammoth are phased into this quest specific instance as well as the real world. You can see them but they cannot see you. I guess it has to do with the NPCs on their mount needing to be accessible.

If encountering a bug (on Patch 3.4.0.45854) where you cannot give in "Herald of War" quest to "Thrall" that means that you're in the standard non-RP phase - this means that you have to go back outside in front of "Undercity" and talk to the newly added "Keepers of Time NPC" and change your phase to "The Battle For Undercity" phase and then go back to Orgrimmar in which case you'll be able to give in Herald of War quest and continue your journey
