Orange: A Guide to all Legendary Weapons
With the buzz about the teaser information for
Fangs of the Father
, it's a good time to go back and look at the other legendaries Blizzard has implemented across expansions. Many of these weapons have similarly striking questlines and unique models--even if you can't transmogrify them, they're worth collecting. Whether you're trying to farm one of these for the looks or lore, or were the first person in your guild to receive one during progression, legendaries have a special place in everyone's heart.
We've also gone through the database to highlight removed, silly, and temporary legendaries for your amusement, as they've got some funny stories behind them too!

News Round Up: Sylvanas Windrunner Story and Bashiok's Notes
Just two quick updates for today: Bashiok posted some fairly hilarious transcriptions of his notes from the TBC era, very fun to read. Blizzard also finally posted another leader story for you lore junkies!
Hopefully the recent silence means patch notes tonight or tomorrow and a PTR to play on this weekend!
Bashiok's "Unintelligible" Notes
I've kept most of my note pads since I've been on the community team, circa pre-BC, and upon going over them I realize two things: that people may enjoy remembering some old game changes I happened to write down, and secondly probably not because my note taking back then was usually so horrible that no sense can be made of them.
Here we go. (spelling and grammatical errors intact)

Well Read: A Guide to the Books of Azeroth
With the
2011 Blizzard Global Writing Contest
fast approaching, now is a perfect time to review the lore of Azeroth--starting with the most obvious place--the books and monuments in game!
You'd be surprised to discover the wealth of information covered right in-game, from the founding of ancient empires to gripping accounts of recent battles, not to mention the detailed readable plaques by statues. There's even a few achievements that reward diligent players for their ocular fortitude.

Higher Learning
Completing
Conoscenza superiore
will grant players the cute vanity pet
Famiglio del Kirin Tor
and
Le Scuole della Magia Arcana - Maestria
, a port to a secret luxurious room in Dalaran. To complete this achievement, you'll need to read books that spawn every few hours in eight locations in Dalaran--and only remain for several minutes after being opened. Besides the long repsawn rate, there is a chance players can instead obtain "dud" books instead--jokey writings that spawn instead of the ones needed for the achievement.

Harvest Festival Begins (Sept. 6th - 13th)
The
Sagra del Raccolto
is a small celebration to honor the fallen heroes of the Horde and Alliance. This year it runs from September 6th through the 13th, transforming the outside of Orgrimmar and Ironforge into feasts. While overall the holiday has few rewards and is an extremely minor world event, any change of scenery is a good thing--especially one that leads right up to Brewfest!
Festival Foods
Festive tables full with food can be found outside of Orgrimmar and Ironforge, from which players can have their fill of food and drink as they celebrate the memory of their faction's fallen champions. You can hold up to 20 of each of these foods, and they do not expire, so they make great meals for alts!

Honoring a Hero
There is only one short quest chain available during the Harvest Festival, with both Horde and Alliance versions, and you pick it right up where the festival is taking place. For this quest, you are sent to show respect to one of your faction's most honored heroes--Grom Hellscream for members of the Horde and Uther Lightbringer for members of the Alliance. NPC Fashion: Dress Like Your Favorite Character
Want to look like Inquisitor Whitemane, or maybe Tyrande Whisperwind? Following the recent series of Transmogrification guides, I've gotten a ton of feedback emails asking about the armor worn by distinctive NPCs.
We've compiled a quirky list of favorites--both celebrity NPCs and lowly grunts--so you can dress up like your favorite hero or villain. Most outfits are fine for mogging (of course, the NPC's outfit has to match your character's primary armor type), but if you want to get the *exact* look to match some NPCs, you'll have to mix armor types. (If you think of another NPC that should be on the list, I'd be happy to look up matching armor and add it to the guide.)
There's also numerous inaccessible pieces of armor worn by NPCs (cough, the shield worn by the
Guardia di Lunargenta
)--perhaps the Darkmoon Faire will introduce some of these fun recolors and robes in 4.3! Personally, it would neat to see Ysera's armor in game, or Thrall's.
The Visual Roleplayer's Gear List
and
Kirina's Closet
were invaluable resources in compiling this list--we've featured some of their creations and you should check them out for even more NPC ideas!

Blizzard 2011 Global Writing Contest
Blizzard just announced their writing contest today--of notable interest is the fact that it's now one month instead of two months to get your piece done! You better not get writer's block with that kind of deadline, eh?
Blizzard Entertainment is proud to present the 2011 Blizzard® Global Writing Contest!
You sit at your typewriter, hands frozen in fear by the sound of crumpling paper from the darkness behind you. Shadows of broken quills encroach on your sight's periphery but slither out of view when you turn toward them. Summoning your courage, you lash out at the apparitions before they fade, only to awaken in a cold sweat with pencils and pens gripped tight in your clenched fists. You know what this dream foretells: the 2011 Global Writing Contest is upon us!
The Prophecy of the Unblinking Eye portends of a time when writing contest judges, mad with ocular fortitude from judging the 2009 and 2010 Global Writing Contests, would brazenly unleash the powers of the Ocunomicon. Seeking rituals to infuse themselves with the twisted souls of fel ocularians, they look to wield powers not meant for this or any other contest. But the sacr

News Round Up: Tyrande Whisperwind, Tier 11 Acquisition, and More
It was an unusually slow Friday today, but it looks like Blizzard has posted the latest story to their lore section--this one is on Tyrande, one of the more overlooked leaders in World of Warcraft's lore scene.
In some exciting Wowhead news, we have a sweepstakes coming up next week that will give our users a chance at some fabulous gaming gear. We'll talk more about that once it's live, but I figured I'd give everyone a little heads up!
On Epics for Casual Raiders
We've offered players who don't raid a reasonable way to gear up, and achieve high levels of power. The JP/VP system makes a lot of sense to us, and gives everyone a pretty good personal progression track in addition to loot drops, and we feel pretty good about the system as it stands. That doesn't necessarily mean that we think that full sets are a necessary part of that picture, though.
We still want to preserve some of the most prestigious PvE loot for players who face down raid content (even if it's a tier behind), and we feel that completing a tier set means that a raid needs to fit in there somewhere. That design makes sense to us, and we want to preserv

Ask the Creative Devs #2
To say that it's been a while since there was a session to ask the creative team at Blizzard questions would probably be an understatement. However, today is changing all that--if you're a lore fanatic, you're about to get some light shed on some very obscure topics. From the question of the blood elves' true eye color to pondering on where the forsaken get their ship fleet from, we've got the second "Ask the CDevs" to show you guys.
The moon recently sent some irate emails to our Creative Development team, threatening to vacate Earth's orbit if we didn't divulge the answers to the "Ask CDev #2" thread soon. Rather than calling the moon's bluff, the CDev team stepped up its timetable and is now ready to present the answers to your questions!
In an effort to efficiently disseminate as much information as possible, many of these questions are amalgamations of several slight variations asked by the US, EU, Korean, and Chinese player bases. In addition, a few unanswered questions from "Ask CDev #1" are included as well. Enjoy!

News Roundup: Authenticator Changes, Anduin Wrynn and Gelbin Mekkatorque Lore
Just a few new posts today, including some clarifications on the new changes with
Battle.net Authenticators
. Players will no longer be prompted for authenticator codes when logging in from a "familiar" location (as tracked and determined by Blizzard). I assume this means it will simply recognize your local IP and no longer prompt for an authenticator code as persistently, which won't help much in protecting your account from family members or criminals who break into your home to hack your Warcraft account. Those exist, right?
Blizzard has also posted a new installment of their "Then and Now" character retrospective series, featuring Anduin Wrynn. In addition, we've got a new short story in the Leaders of Azeroth series, featuring none other than Gelbin Mekkatorque, leader of the gnomes! Alliance players rejoice, this lore's all for you!

Patch 4.2: Elemental Bonds Quest Preview
The Elemental Bonds questline is finally up on the PTR and we've taken the liberty of doing it all so you can spoil yourselves silly. As a point of note, this questline is the main lore point behind 4.2 and it features both the villains as well as the heroes of
Terre del Fuoco
.
As the Blizzard preview teased, this quest chain focuses on Aggra and Thrall both as lovers and heroes trying to save the world. Having seen it in-depth, we can confirm that it focuses on both traditional and nontraditional enemies; as much of the questline is Thrall overcoming his fears and desires as a mortal being with limited time on Azeroth as it is fighting elementals.
To help showcase this truly epic quest, we've compiled a YouTube video of all the scenes from start to finish and we also wrote up more in-depth guide. You can find both in this post.
However, if you don't want to be spoiled, close this page
now
. Even the comments will probably be rife with debate or speculation on this quest chain and its implementation, outcome, and so on. In short, it's not our fault if you spoil yourselves. We've warned you

Patch 4.2 Preview: Thrall's Return, World Tree Restoration
Thrall's back in this new 4.2 teaser released by Blizzard today. However, freeing him won't be easy; you'll have to face elementals as well as Thrall's own past. It's interesting that they chose to bring him back by tying him so closely to the World Tree's restoration, hinging its fate largely on freeing him from his elemental bonds.
It should be exciting to see how it plays out. Personally, we're wondering if this quest will have any room for choices. Blizzard has been alluding to the possibility that phasing in 4.2's new areas will be based on a player's choices, ultimately aiming to make Firelands a very personal experience for players. It would be quite compelling if Thrall were linked to the personalized outcome that they desire, especially given his rich history as a prominent Warcraft lore figure.

Archaeology Impressions
How's the Cataclysm been treating you guys so far? The expansion added a ton of new things to do, including new dungeons to run, quests to complete, raid encounters to defeat, items to craft and otherwise acquire. Despite all of those substantially more "important" things, a new secondary profession was added, available to players who have purchased the expansion.
Archeologia
lures players to spend the substantial amount of time grinding out digsites and completing artifacts with promises of odd, quirky and even downright amazing blue and epic quality items. Other secondary professions offer an expected, substantial benefit, such as the valuable food buffs obtained by
Cucina
and
Pesca
, and who doesn't love being able to bandage? But
Archeologia
is a bit different.
Read on for Archaeology information, including lists of all of the rare artifacts, and my own personal impressions of the profession!

Character Transformation: Thrall, Then and Now

We will see more articles in the future about other key characters' transformations, including Garrosh, Anduin Wrynn, and Magni Bronzebeard and possibly others. Check out the full post about Thrall's amazing metamorphosis from noble war hero to shamanistic savior of our kind after the break!

ZAM Interview with Richard Knaak
Cody Bye, the Director of Content of ZAM, has just interviewed
Richard Knaak
, one of the most famous writers of novels and short stories for not only World of Warcraft, but a number of other fictional worlds. Knaak's "Blizzard" bibliography includes novels like
Stormrage
(the latest official Warcraft novel on the market), 3 standalone Diablo novels,
The Sin War
series, Warcraft's
War of the Ancients
trilogy, as well as 2 standalone novels other than
Stormrage
. In addition to those, he has an impressive number of Dragonlance, Dragonrealm, Conan, individual novels... not to mention his short fiction pieces and the manga.
Sadly, this interview didn't quench my thirst for lore (could anything?), but it was an interesting read nonetheless. The interview is after the break!

Blizzard Introduces the Story Forum
Blizzard yesterday introduced a new board on the World of Warcraft official forums, aptly named the
Story Forum
. In it players are urged to discuss storylines from throughout the Warcraft universe, including the ones told in game as well as through the novels, manga, comics and short stories that Blizzard publishes.
The most interesting portion about the new Story Forum is Blizzard plans on using it as a way to let users
influence
the stories they will publish. With this Blizzard hopes to give us a direct line to story developers, so they can get specific examples of what we like and don't like to make the story better for us all.
You can read the original announcements after the break, or check out the official forum

So, with the fight with Arthas finally on the horizon, I've been thinking a lot about the road leading up to it: specifically Ulduar, and the fight with Algalon the Observer, and something about it just rings false with me.
