The Twilight Dragonflight, led by the consort of Deathwing, Sintharia, was one of the most prominent enemies during the Cataclysm expansion. Dormant since then, they are slowly making a re-emergence, starting with Legion, and are now appearing more prominently during Rise of Azshara. In this post, we go through all their appearances up to the Rise of Azshara PTR.
Story Spoilers for Rise of Azshara in this post!
What is the Twilight Dragonflight?
The Twilight Dragonflight is a corrupted dragonflight created by Sintharia/Sinestra, consort of Deathwing. She managed to create them by using the magic from nether dragons and ancient relics. Twilight Dragons were special in the fact that they are able to feed vampirically on all forms of magic.
In-game, they were introduced at the end of Wrath of the Lich King with
Halion
, the main boss of
Santuario di Rubino
raid. Their presence was expanded during the Cataclysm, with several Twilight Dragons serving as bosses from dungeons and raids, such as
Valiona
and
Theralion
in
Bastione del Crepuscolo
, and
Ultraxion
and
Goriona
.
Maestro di Guerra Corno Nero
's mount, in
Anima del Drago
. During the
Sinestra
encounter in the Bastion of Twilight, we face against Deathwing's consort on one of her hatcheries under the raid, and many Twilight Dragons appear during the encounter.
After the Cataclysm, it was believed that the Twilight Dragonflight was, if not entirely, nearly extinct, with Sintharia herself being killed during the events of the book
Night of the Dragon
.
Legion
During the Shaman Order Hall Campaign, a Twilight Dragon named
Zeryxia
, disguised as a Blood Elf who calls herself Mistress of Twilight, is found leading the Twilight's Hammer in Deepholm. Although she is killed during
La Signora del Crepuscolo
, she proclaims on her death breath that the Twilight Dragonflight lives and they are able to endure even in death.
The Twilight Dragonflight would not be mentioned again until Battle for Azeroth.
Mistress of Twilight says: Did you really think you could stop me? Foolish children!
Mistress of Twilight says: The blood of Sintharia flows through my veins and her voice whispers to me from the Dark Beyond!
Zeryxia says: The Twilight Dragonflight lives and our destiny is at hand!
Zeryxia says: Even in death we shall endure... mother I return...
Island Expeditions and the Battered Twlight Scale
The first hint we have at their return in Battle for Azeroth is via Island Expeditions. The heavy amounts of Azerite has drawn some of the remaining Twilight Dragons to invade islands during expeditions, and they can drop
Scaglia del Crepuscolo Rovinata
at the end of an Island.
According to
Eryna
, a Twilight Dragonflight expert located near Grim Batol, the reason the Twilight Dragons are popping up again is because of the troggs inhabiting Grim Batol, who have dug in so deep that they have uncovered a previously unknown cache of corrupted eggs.
Shh! Step back! We can't let them see us!
What are you doing here? Who sent you?
<Eryna listens as you explain the twilight attack.>
Yes, we know. It's those damn stone troggs, nothing stops their digging! They dug far deeper and further than we thought possible.
What's more, when I really concentrate, I can feel the heartbeat of thousands of tiny creatures in there. We have no idea how many more eggs remain...
The
Vendicatore del Crepuscolo
mount, also a drop from Islands, also hints at their re-emergence from Grim Batol.
"Little is known about the fate of the twilight dragonflight, though they seem to exist in numbers in Grim Batol to this day."
Twilight Whelps and the Young Twilight Scale
One of the new additions with Rise of Azshara is a new member of the Whelpling collection, the
Draghetto del Crepuscolo
. These can be found as Wild Battle Pets near the entrance to Grim Batol in Twilight Highlands, and when you capture one, you will receive a
Scaglia di Draghetto del Crepuscolo
. This can be turned over to Eryna, who updates you about the Twilight situation: She believes that they're emerging because something awakened in the depths.
Welcome, I see you recently noticed the whelps. They appeared recently, along with more members of the flight coming and going from the citadel.
I have indeed been observing strange happenings down below.
I sense a great power has manifested. Something awakened in the depths, perhaps? One thing is certain -- the flight is mobilizing at someone's command.
I will continue to relay all I find to my flight and your Speaker, thank you for your assistance.
The flavor text for the Twilight Whelpling also alludes to something happening in Grim Batol.
A re-emergence of whelps outside of Grim Batol has the red dragonflight worried -- something is happening in the lost city.
Attack on Vermillion Redoubt
The Twilight Dragonflight also appears during the
Rise of Azshara Magni Questline
, making an aggressive attack against the Red Dragonflight settlement of Vermillion Redoubt, also close to Grim Batol. Led by a Twilight Dragon named
Vexiona
, they managed to cripple Alexstrasza until the adventurer arrives with Kalecgos.
Vexiona manages to ensnare both Kalecgos and Alexstrasza, showing she is not to be trifled with. After the adventurer interferes with her crippling, the Twilight Dragon manages to escape the encounter, but not before repeatedly talking about a master.
Vexiona: Behold the future of all dragonflights. United as one. You will see the truth as I have, sister.
Alexstrasza: You are not my sister.
---
Kalecgos: She's escaping! Quickly, we must chase her down!
Vexiona: Whatever power you seek will not protect you from me!
Alexstrasza: There is but one way this can end, <player>. Prepare for a fight.
---
Kalecgos: There she is. Now we finish this.
Vexiona: So be it. If you will not join us, then you will be reduced to empty husks.
Alexstrasza: The master you serve will lead you to nothing but ruin.
---
Kalecgos: Enough! This madness ends now!
Alexstrasza: The Aspects will defend Azeroth until our dying breath!
Vexiona: This is not possible! I... just need... more power!
Vexiona: Your pathetic dragonflights will fall. If you will not serve the master, then I will find one who will!
Alexstrasza: Let her go. The Redoubt is safe for now.
Alexstrasza: I know you seek to empower the Heart of Azeroth. You have more than earned my support.
Alexstrasza: Champion. Your actions today have saved the red dragonflight from a terrible fate. For that, I am eternally grateful.
Although Vexiona was the clear leader of the attack against Vermillion Redoubt, she was sent there by a master. Who is this master, and why are the Twilight re-emerging? Eryna believes it might have been because of something in the depths, which hints to N'Zoth being involved somehow. This would not be the first time an Old God trifles with the dragons, with Deathwing driven to insanity by them before.
