The Fifth Old God Controversy: Examining the Titans' Claims

In Patch 7.0.2, an annotated version of an old lore book reminds us about a fifth Old God - a being who has been present in every version of this in-game book, including a version that was added to the game around the same time that
Chronicles Volume II
came out - and yet is strangely absent from the
Chronicles
series.
We've
already reported
on
Gli Dei Antichi e l'Ordine di Azeroth (Commentato)
, a new updated version of the Classic book,
Gli Dei Antichi e l'Ordine di Azeroth
. The original book is about early Titan lore, explaining how they came to discover Azeroth, only to realize it had been infected by the Old Gods. It briefly describes the Old God control of Azeroth, how the Elemental Lords ruled their armies, and how the Titans eventually gained victory and chained the Old Gods beneath the earth. It goes on to detail how the Titans empowered certain races, created the earthen, and established the Well of Eternity, before finally naming the continent of Kalimdor.
While the new version is almost exactly the same, it also includes scornful notes on every page - written by someone who does not like the Titans at all.
The most interesting thing about this book, however, is the mention of a fifth old god.
The Pantheon shattered the Old Gods' citadels and chained the five evil gods far beneath the surface of the world.
Chronicles Volume I
only mentioned four Old Gods: Y'Shaarj, who they killed and whose death caused so much damage to Azeroth they decided never to risk killing another Old God again, N'Zoth, C'Thun, and Yogg-Saron. There is no mention of a fifth Old God being encountered or imprisoned, making it easy to assume any lore about a fifth Old God was retconned by the time the first volume of Chronicles came out.
However, none of this considers
Gli Dei Antichi e l'Ordine di Azeroth
, the Legion version of this book that was added in Patch 7.0.2, a year after the first
Chronicles
volume was released, and around the same time that
Chronicles Volume II
was published. This book can still be found and looted in Dalaran, and it was never rewritten to claim four Old Gods instead of five. So in-game, at least, whispers of five Old Gods have remained canon both before and during the release of the
Chronicles
series.
Of course, one aspect of
Chronicles
is that these books are written from the perspective of those affiliated with the Titans, who we have learned have
not always been honest with us about the history of Azeroth and the Black Empire
. The notes on this annotated version of this book reinforce this theme - the writer, presumably Neltharion, clearly questions the Titans and their versions of events.
It is also possible that the fifth "Old God" is referring to G'huun. While not an original Old God, G'huun has been
referred to as an Old God in-game
. It was accidentally created by the Titans when they experimented on the other imprisoned Old Gods, and locked away in the same facility it was created in - Uldir. Though it feels strange to have G'huun listed next to far more powerful Old Gods like Yogg-Saron, it is easy to understand why the Titans would want to downplay the story of this particular God.
Either way, we
once again
find ourselves asking questions about the truth of the Titans' accounts. If the omission of a fifth Old God from
Chronicles
was deliberate, and we must assume it was, it raises questions as to why? What would motivate the Titans to keep the secret of such an important threat from us?
