The Covenant Campaign storylines wrapped up this week with the final chapters unlocking with 22 Renown. Though they sometimes overlap, each Covenant has had its own, unique storyline, specific to that Covenant's concerns, interests, and zone. We thought it would be nice to do a quick recap.
For a more detailed look at these stories, our Story Guides have been updated to the end of Chapter 9. Check them out if you haven't already!
The Story of the Kyrian Covenant Campaign The Story of the Necrolords Covenant Campaign
The Story of the Night Fae Covenant Campaign The Story of the Venthyr Covenant Campaign
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
Overview
The Kyrian campaign's main focus is defending their realm, mostly against Forsworn attacks. This conflict climaxes during the final chapter, where
Uther
is finally shown to regret his mistakes from
Afterlives: Bastion
enough to join the fight on the Kyrian side, helping to defeat the Forsworn leader,
Lysonia
. In the end,
Kyrestia la Primogenita
grants him mercy, though he's placed under guard, and there is some discussion that the Kyrian have a lot to think about.
The Necrolords' campaign's main focus is the war in their realm, as the House of the Chosen fights desperately against the treacherous Houses that have abandoned the Maldraxxi's sacred duty of protecting the realms of the
Terretetre
. The final chapter overlaps with the Venthyr, as both Covenants assault the House of Rituals, where
Kel'Thuzad
has taken control after betraying and imprisoning the House of Rituals' true leader,
Margravio Sin'dane
. The Necrolords ultimately defeat
Kel'Thuzad
and rescue
Margravio Sin'dane
, effectively winning
Maldraxxus
's civil war.
The Night Fae's campaign's main focus is to nurture their realm, trying to cope with looking after the souls entrusted to their care, the Anima drought that's killing the forest, and invasions from both
Mueh'zala
, and the Drust. In the final chapter, Night Fae players launch an assault on the Drust invaders, taking down their leader,
Gorak Zhar
, only to discover, tragically, that they've been fooled by an illusion, and have murdered
Ara'lon
from the
Afterlives: Ardenweald
short instead. Despite this setback, the Night Fae are able to finally defeat the Drust. In the aftermath, they're even able to witness the
Regina dell'Inverno
empowering the Heart of the Forest once more.
The Venthyr campaign's main focus is to successfully pull off a revolution in their realm, overthrowing
Sire Denathrius
and placing his son,
Principe Renathal
in his place. As part of this, the Venthyr need to collect seven medallions, with final chapter revolving around getting
Principe Renathal
's own
Medaglione del Dominio
back from its new possessor -
Kel'Thuzad
of the House of Rituals. The final chapter of the Venthyr campaign overlaps with the Necrolords, as the Covenants run into each other while both assaulting the House of Rituals. The Venthyr are ultimately victorious, and
Principe Renathal
realizes absolute power over
Revendreth
should not be given to one Sire, but rather that the zone should be ruled by a Court.
Kyrian
Focus: Defending their zone.
From the moment players arrived in
Bastione
, the Kyrian's major concern has been the Forsworn. Initially lead by
Devos
- once the Paragon of Loyalty, now the Paragon of Doubt - the Forsworn are former Kyrian who question the Kyrian path, particularly the expectation to let go of the memories of one's life. This doubt in the path began when
Devos
met
Uther
- something we witnessed during the
Afterlives: Bastion
short. It eventually leads to
Uther
bypassing the entire
Terretetre
system to cast
Arthas
into
La Fauce
himself, and to the Forworn joining forces with
Il Carceriere
.
During the Kyrian storyline, the Forsworn are a constant threat, even destroying the Crest of Ascension - a devastating blow as the Kyrian need this crest in order to make new Ascended. Kyrian players help to restore the Crest bit by bit throughout the campaign - a task that sometimes overlaps with other Covenants as they head into the other zones for items needed for the repairs. The Forsworn aren't the only threat, and the Kyrian also take some time to head into
Maldraxxus
to help the Necrolords in an assault on the House of Constructs, partly to prevent another attack on
Bastione
.
It's interesting to note the Kyrian path is not treated as perfect beyond question by the story. Kleia is seen to question the path without going full Forsworn after she discovers Kyrian have been carrying on collecting souls and bringing them to the
Terretetre
even after things went wrong and it meant all souls are sent directly to
La Fauce
. She is also visibly upset that she wasn't warned about this before she collects a soul herself for the first time, and how this blindsided her.
Even
Kyrestia la Primogenita
herself expresses some doubts about the Kyrian way of discarding memories - though this happens in the
Guglie dell'Ascensione
dungeon.
Kyrestia the Firstborne says: Long have we believed that our mortal lives are burdens to be shed in the name of service. And yet, the deeds of mortals are what won the day.
Kyrestia the Firstborne says: You have my gratitude. Once the Jailer lies defeated... there may be much for the kyrian to discuss.
The Story of Bastion's Dungeons
It's also discovered that not all Forsworn might be fully aware of the path their new leaders have placed them on. When
Devos
is defeated in the
Guglie dell'Ascensione
, she is replaced by
Lysonia
, who later betrays
Uther
and attempts to sacrifice him for her own power. This leaves
Uther
questioning his own loyalties, as well as his past actions. The Forsworn might have valid concerns, but it's clear they're being manipulated.
The Kyrian finale ends with a major conflict with the Forsworn. Kyrian players are sent to help recapture The Temple of Loyalty, but have to rush home to Elysian Hold when the Forsworn launch an attack on their leader, The Archon:
Kyrestia la Primogenita
.
Uther
joins the final battle, but on the Kyrian side. Once
Lysonia
is defeated, he begs
Kyrestia la Primogenita
for mercy, which she grants, and is placed under guard.
Kyrestia the Firstborne says: Your service is complete.
Kyrestia the Firstborne says: As for you, Uther...
Uther says: My Archon, I ask for your mercy. I... did not understand...
Kyrestia the Firstborne says: It is granted, for now.
Kyrestia the Firstborne says: Your actions this day have shown me much.
Kyrestia the Firstborne says: We shall discuss your fate in time. Until then, you may stay here under guard.
As
Uther
leaves with his guard, he admits that what he did to
Arthas
was never justice, but vengeance. Interestingly, the response from his guard,
Thenios
, hints that the Kyrian, too, may need to reconsider some things.
Uther says: I too would like to understand. Please, lead the way.
Uther says: My training as an Aspirant was difficult. I remember nothing of my life.
Uther says: Every time I close my eyes, I see my death. I see... him... standing before me, that cursed blade in hand...
Uther says: Devos convinced me that my death was wrong. She promised me justice.
Uther says: What we did to him was not justice. It was vengeance.
Uther says: Lysonia was no different. I did not know that they wielded the same darkness...
Uther says: Thank you for showing me mercy. I will not forsake it.
Thenios says: We all have much to learn, Uther. Come, let us speak further at my temple.
The campaign ends with the player witnessing the Crest of Ascension's final empowerment.
Necrolords
Focus: War in their zone.
When players first arrive in
Maldraxxus
, they quickly discover the zone is in the middle of a civil war. Under normal circumstances, the Maldraxxi would be divided into five great houses: The House of Plagues, the House of Eyes, the House of Constructs, the House of Rituals, and the House of the Chosen. It would also have a leader to rule over all - the Primus. However, the Primus has disappeared. The House of Constructs and the House of Rituals turned on the other houses, destroying the House of Plagues and the House of Eyes. Only the House of the Chosen, the house that
Baronessa Draka
belongs to, remains loyal to the sacred duty of
Maldraxxus
: To protect the realms of the
Terretetre
. We saw some of this in the
Afterlives: Maldraxxus
short.
Throughout the Necrolords campaign, players assist the House of the Chosen in the war against the other houses, and they help empower the Seat of the Primus as they discover various relics of the Primus which they place on the Statue of the Primus.
As for the Primus himself, he remains missing. However, players do happen to come across a large creature named the
Incisore di Rune
, trapped by
Il Carceriere
, and missing all his memories, but who is a master smith like the Primus, has certain physical similarities to the Primus, and is voiced by the same voice actor who plays the Primus. But we're sure that's all just a coincidence.
Together with the Kyrian, who are determined to prevent another Maldraxxi assault on
Bastione
, they manage to defeat the House of Constructs, uncovering a plot that involves sending anima to
Revendreth
. They discover
Kel'Thuzad
of the House of Rituals is in league with
Sire Denathrius
of Revendreth, and with
Il Carceriere
, and that he betrayed The House of Rituals from within, eventually taking the leader,
Margravio Sin'dane
, captive.
The final chapter overlaps with the Venthyr, as both Covenants assault the House of Rituals together, (see the video under the Venthyr campaign) finally defeating
Kel'Thuzad
, though he's rescued by his Mawsworn allies, and rescuing
Margravio Sin'dane
.
With
Margravio Sin'dane
in charge of the House of Rituals again,
Baronessa Draka
formally invites the House of Rituals to join the Necrolords, an invitation that
Margravio Sin'dane
accepts.
Margrave Sin'dane says: Ke'Thuzad is gone, yet your forces remain. Were I the suspicious sort, I might believe you were plotting to unseat me as margrave.
Baroness Draka says: Not if you will agree to join our cause, Sin'dane. Your strength is needed if we are to thwart the Jailer.
Margrave Sin'dane says: I see now the true threat before us. The House of Rituals stands with you. As proof of my good faith, I offer this staff once wielded by the Primus himself.
Baroness Draka says: We will return the staff to the Seat of the Primus. It shall serve as a reminder of our victory.
Baroness Draka says: Though Kel'Thuzad escaped justice, his shadow has been driven from Maldraxxus. And we have gained an uneasy ally in Margrave Sin'dane.
The player returns the
Bastone del Primus
to the Seat of the Primus, and Vision of the Primus appears, declaring that the strength of
Maldraxxus
lies in unity, rather than in the glorification of one single House.
Vision of the Primus says: Focus. Strategy. Relentlessness.
Vision of the Primus says: These are the weapons of the Necrolords.
Vision of the Primus says: Victory will be claimed not by a single house, but through the strength of our covenant.
Vision of the Primus says: For Maldraxxus!
Night Fae
Focus: Nurture their zone.
When players first arrive in
Selvarden
, the Night Fae's biggest worry is the Anima drought that's destroying her forests. The Heart of the Forest is greatly weakened, which not only puts
Selvarden
at risk, but all of the
Terretetre
. Though the leader of
Selvarden
, the
Regina dell'Inverno
, has been doing her best to save as many as she can, much has had to be sacrificed, and a great deal has been lost. One notable example is when the grove of one keeper begins to die.
Ara'lon
does his best to keep the wildseed of
Ursoc
alive and nutured, but is eventually faced with the difficult choice to sacrifice
Ursoc
for the sake of
Selvarden
as a whole. We watched this decision being made in the
Afterlives: Ardenweald
short.
Selvarden
is a zone that nurtures and cares for the souls placed into its care, and to do this effectively, the forests of
Selvarden
itself need to be strong and healthy. Night Fae players very quickly find themselves put to work, tending to their zone as one might tend to a garden. When
Shandris Piumaluna
is worried about the effects the Night Warrior powers may have on her adopted mother,
Tyrande Soffiabrezza
, she comes to
Selvarden
for help. When the player ultimately assists her and
Tyrande Soffiabrezza
in rescuing the souls of many Night Elves who died in the Burning of
Teldrassil
, their souls are brought to and given a new home in
Selvarden
. (Side note: As a Horde Night Fae main, I have to say being able to do this made me really feel a chance at finding redemption for my role in those
Battle for Azeroth
events!)
Shandris Feathermoon says: What will happen to these souls?
Ysera says: They will find peace and respite here. Some may even choose new forms and help tend the groves.
A plan is formed to try help
Tyrande Soffiabrezza
by spreading her power among many Night Warriors - whose souls are all over
Selvarden
- but those souls are still being gathered. It's likely we will see more of this story in a later patch.
Bwonsamdi
makes an appearance to highlight the fact that the former Loa of Death,
Mueh'zala
, is in
Selvarden
stealing the wildseeds of Wild Gods. The player helps him confront and ultimately defeat the loa, in quests that reveal that
Mueh'zala
is working with
Il Carceriere
, and that it was
Mueh'zala
who whispered
Sylvanas Ventolesto
's name to
Vol'jin
back in
Legion
, a whisper that made her Warchief and directly led to the events of
Battle for Azeroth
.
Mueh'zala says: You don't be stoppin' da Jailer! Him be workin' his plans for a long time. A loooooong time.
Mueh'zala says: War be burnin' dis whole world ta ashes... all over one... little... whisper ta dis foolish troll.
Spirit of Vol'jin says: Dat voice... whisperin' as da poison be burnin' in me veins... Windrunner...
Mueh'zala says: Oh, ya like me whispers, little chieftain? Was gonna send ya soul to da Maw meself... but ya bond ta dis world be too hard ta break.
Spirit of Vol'jin says: It be me who named Sylvanas warchief. But Mueh'zala and da Jailer... dey be pullin' da strings all along.
Meanwhile, the Anima drought has cause
Selvarden
to weaken, making it susceptible to an invasion from the Drust - who invaded the zone once before, long ago. The Drust are stealing Anima and mind-controlling Night Fae with enchanted masks, often turning them so completely they cannot be saved and are forced to be put down instead.
Lady Moonberry says: My Queen... the Drust bent noble Ara'lon to their will and deceived us into confronting him. He's... gone.
Lord Herne says: Our foe now marches on the Grove of Awakening, conscripting your own subjects into their ranks.
Lord Herne says: What are your orders?
Winter Queen says: Loyal Ara'lon understood difficult choices. The need to make certain sacrifices.
The night fae look downcast.
Winter Queen says: But there comes a time to fight for that which we hold most dear.
Winter Queen says: Our sacrifices will not be in vain!
Despite this setback, the Night Fae are able to finally defeat
Gorak Zhar
. In the aftermath, they're even able to witness the
Regina dell'Inverno
empowering the Heart of the Forest once more.
Venthyr
Focus: Revolution in their zone.
When players are first sent to
Revendreth
, it's with the impression that
Sire Denathrius
can be trusted. They soon discover he is dealing with a revolution of Venthyr who believe he has betrayed
Revendreth
, and that the revolutionaries are right.
Sire Denathrius
has been starving his own citizens of Anima, forcing a drought not just on
Revendreth
, but on all of the
Terretetre
, while he has stockpiles of Anima himself. This is addressed in the
Afterlives: Revendreth
short.
While all players help enough to discover
Sire Denathrius
is not only allied with
Il Carceriere
, but has been funneling vast amounts of anima directly into
La Fauce
, Venthyr players commit to fully join the revolution - lead by
Sire Denathrius
's own son,
Principe Renathal
. In the beginning,
Principe Renathal
has nearly nothing - a handful of allies and a single powerful Medallion, the
Medaglione del Terrore
, found by players within
La Fauce
. Players need to help the Venthyr gather power, by both finding more allies, and in finding more Medallions.
There are seven Medallions of Power in
Revendreth
. The
Medaglione del Terrore
, the
Medaglione dell'Orgoglio
, the
Medaglione del Desiderio
, the
Medaglione dell'Avarizia
, the
Medaglione dell'Invidia
, the
Medaglione del Dominio
, and the Medallion of Wrath. Players can recover the first six of these Medallions - it is assumed the final Medallion will be obtained in a later patch. While players help
Principe Renathal
gain power, they also witness him grappling with the legacy of his father, who, instead of properly performing his sacred duty of redeeming souls, fell to temptation and abused his power.
Revendreth
is about helping souls find redemption before being sentenced to
La Fauce
, and when
Kael'thas Solealto
is discovered and rescued during the raid on
Castello di Nathria
, players get to help
L'Accusatrice
as she works to redeem his soul. When it's discovered that the new possessor of the
Medaglione del Dominio
,
Principe Renathal
's own Medallion, is
Kel'Thuzad
, who is now part of the House of Rituals of
Maldraxxus
,
Kael'thas Solealto
is particularly furious due to his own history with the lich. And though he remains prideful throughout the story,
Kael'thas Solealto
does eventually show the first hints of remorse. We will likely see more of his redemption later.
The final chapter of the Venthyr campaign overlaps with the Necrolords, as the Covenants run into each other while both assaulting the House of Rituals.
Once
Principe Renathal
has his own
Medaglione del Dominio
back from
Kel'Thuzad
, (see the video under the Necrolords campaign) he is no longer the leader of a weak, unimpressive force. The Venthyr revolution is, by this stage, a force to be reckoned with.
Sire Denathrius
's voice tempts him once again, telling him to take all the power at his fingertips, but
Principe Renathal
is not his father. When one of his trusted advisors,
L'Accusatrice
, counsels him to remember how power corrupted his father, he listens, realizing that absolute power over
Revendreth
should not be given to one Sire, but rather that the zone should be ruled by a Court.
The Accuser says: Will it be enough? We do not yet possess all of the medallions.
Sire Denathrius says: Renethal...
Sire Denathrius says: You know my power. Embrace it. Be one with me... again.
The Accuser says: Yes, Prince Renathal. You do know him. And what his lust for power made him become.
Prince Renathal says: Yes... You are right. I cannot wield such power. But we can.
Prince Renathal says: The time of Sires is over. Revendreth no longer serves a Master, but a Court.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, though these particular chapters are over, the stories of these campaigns are nowhere near done. The Kyrian story hints that, while the Forsworn were manipulated, it was because they had some valid concerns, and the Archon herself may still be willing to reconsider some aspects of the Kyrian path. The Necrolords are still missing their Primus whose disappearance may or may not be related to the
Incisore di Rune
- who knows? The Night Fae still need to find out if they can save
Tyrande Soffiabrezza
from the powers of the Night Warrior. And the Venthyr are still missing a Medallion - and still need to redeem
Kael'thas Solealto
's soul. It's likely we still have a great deal of story to experience. After all, this expansion has only just begun.
