During our escapades in Azj-Kahet, we meet Orweyna and the mysterious Haranir. While their time in the main story is brief, players can quest with Orweyna further to learn more about these mysterious protectors as they investigate the Black Blood.
Investigating the Nerubians
We initially met Orweyna during our first expedition into Azj-Kahet, along with the Arathi and Alleria, in search of Anduin. While we help her clean up a small amount of the Black Blood's corruption and see her confronted by her fellow Haranir, she quickly departs afterwards, wishing us luck on our journey.
After completing the leveling campaign, we can again find Orweyna in the region, this time at Wildcamp Ul'ar just outside the City of Threads. We don't find her alone this time, however, as she is accompanied by another Haranir named Hannan. Despite his presence around the player and the nearby Arathi, he seems eager to avoid us in the same vein as all the other Haranir we've encountered.
Orweyna seems no less willing to work with us again, however, and despite Hannan's protests, she tasks us with investigating how the nerubians are manipulating the Black Blood, and how they are keeping themselves safe from its corrupting influence.
As we investigate the nearby extraction site and the tools the nerubians are using, Orweyna expresses her increasing shock at just how pervasive the nerubian's are already, while Hannan expresses his continued trepidation at embarking on this task. Along the way, we discover that the nerubians use tuning devices to emit a resonance that disperses the Black Blood, in order to keep their sanity -- a tool that will be of much use to us later on.
Additionally, you can ask Orweyna why the Black Blood is of such consequence, and she explains that its corruption does not merely alter the mind, but shifts its victim into a realm known as 'the Unseeming'. Though she explains little here, we learn much more about this mysterious realm as the quests progress. She also once again brings up the presence of the Radiant Song within her head, a seeming rarity among theHaranir, and how the discordant nature of the Unseeming is disrupting its purity. She seeks to cleanse it and restore the blissful nature of the Song, and thus we continue our journey to root out the Black Blood.
We can also talk to Hannan, who is clearly still trying to avoid us entirely. Although it seems to be a part of the Haranir's edicts, the unfortunate tagalong seems to be following them more out of stressed obligation than genuine belief, and struggles to do so.
Experimenting with the Black Blood
At our next stop, we find another outcropping of Black Blood, though this time it is abandoned. Taking the opportunity to investigate one of their extractors (despite yet more of Hannan's protests), Orweyna and the player break open one of the extractors to investigate it further. Unfortunately, Orweyna's recklessness has consequences not for herself, but for Hannan, as he and the player are sprayed with Black Blood and phased into the Unseeming.
Regretting what has happened, Orweyna urges us to follow Hannan in, and guide him outside so that she can use the nerubian resonance crystals to purify the both of us. We find Hannan inside gripped by fear, and after further indulging in the Black Blood to defeat the monstrosities he is facing, we are able to guide him back outside. Despite her initial regret, Orweyna seems keen to shrug off her error and continue their journey.
Despite Hannan's protestations becoming even more insistent after encountering such horrors, Orweyna continues to push onward to find the source of the corruption, leaving us behind in a hurried frenzy. Now alone with Hannan, he expresses his hesitation, but ultimately continues to follow along with us at his side. He tasks us with covering up Orweyna's tracks, to cover up evidence of the Haranir ever being there, though he cannot offer a reason why. Offering us his staff, we cleanse the region of her magical residue while he hurries off to follow her trail.
Now more deeply indebted to us, we can again ask Hannan why he is so concerned with Orweyna. With a more open mind, he confesses his fears over Orweyna's actions, despite the nobility he sees in them, and how his softer nature doesn't lend will to the head-on confrontations that she and the player prefer.
Confronting the Unseeming
After covering her tracks, we find Orweyna and Hannan in the Maddening Deep, where the outcroppings of Black Blood are at their thickest in Azj-Kahet. Though still horrified, Orweyna is resolved to find the source of the corruption, and to do so, she must enter the Unseeming herself. After destroying more extractors for good measure, we bring her corrupted essences to allow her to join us in the Unseeming.
Inundating ourselves with the deepest level of corruption (at 50 stacks), the player and Orweyna travel to find the innermost horrors of the Unseeming, and along the way, Hannan urges us to continue to cover our tracks by eliminating the leader of the nerubians in the region.
As we journey deeper into the Maddening Deep, we discover all sorts of victims within the Unseeming. From the smallest nerubian to the largest of Deepwalkers, no form of life seems to be safe from its corruption after being exposed to the Black Blood. Even the once-thriving plant life of the region has been twisted into horrid abominations, according to Orweyna.
Of most intriguing note is that along with the Unseeming's victims, we also find a Faceless One at the heart of the corruption. Though we slay it, it echoes with an ominous phrase indicating its potential immortality in the Unseeming.
After clearing out the heart of the region, we find ourselves no closer to cleansing the corruption than before, and Orweyna seems to finally realize that. Returning to our overlook and cleansing ourselves of the Black Blood's corruption once more, Orweyna finally relents in her pursuit.
Now secure (if disheartened) with the revelation that she cannot solve the problem of the Black Blood on her own, Orweyna finally lets up in her reckless path, and opts returns to the Wildcamp with Hannan. Her fellow Haranir offers her words of comfort, and the two depart from the Maddening Deep.
Mysteries Yet Unsolved
While we certainly learn much about the Unseeming and the nature of the Black Blood's corruption during our time with Orweyna, it offered just as many new mysteries, about both the Haranir and the Black Blood alike.
With regards to the Black Blood, the largest lingering question remains its origin. Although we have a few potential hints, such as the Weaver Arak'nai calling it the 'blood of dead gods' or Xal'atath referring to it as
her
power, the truth of the matter remains to be seen.
Rather than offer answers, this questline left us with even more questions, especially in regards to the involvement of void entities such as the Faceless Ones. We get nothing more than that one death line, but the implication that beings of void like them find immortality in a realm like the Unseeming almost certainly indicates that it will pose a threat in the future, if we confront the Black Blood once more in other regions.
With regards to the Haranir, we are likewise left with many more questions than answers. While Orweyna is clearly an exception to the rule of her people, headstrong and single minded in her pursuit of solutions not unlike a character such as Tyrande, the other Haranir are as far from that as possible.
Even an amicable fellow like Hannan seems steadfast in his conviction to their mysterious edicts, and remain sworn to secrecy regarding who they are, why they are here, and what the importance of their grandiose Great Roots truly is. With how heavily Orweyna was marketed in the lead-up to The War Within, many found it a surprise that she played such a minor role in the main story. While these side stories greatly flesh out her personality, they offer little in regards to answers.
While the direct threat of the Ascended nerubians is solved in the main story, the greater issue of the Black Blood still remains, and the effects it is having on other regions surrounding the Haranir's Great Roots remains to be seen. Although this questline ends with a rather abrupt conclusion, it is a near-certainty that we will see more of Orweyna and the Haranir as we progress deeper into Khaz Algar during The War Within's patch stories.
