At BlizzCon 2017,
The Lost Codex
, a lore channel dedicated to all things Azeroth through visual, narrative and musical storytelling, sat down with Alex Afrasiabi and Shani Edwards to discuss Battle for Azeroth.
They have shared their interview notes with us below! Highlights include:
The Alliance will get a taste of the story showing why the Nightborne allied with the Horde.
Zandalari Druid Models will have their own form, and travel form is a raptor.
The Kul Tiran big burly humans are 100% new models--they are not re-rigged humans.
Edit: The video is now up!
Who fired first?
A: We’ll experience the glory of that situation. But Alex Saw a Reddit post on his Orc who had started a campfire on the Teldrassil branches. He definitely fired first shot :)
Q: When did Manduin develop this battle prowess?
Alex: Wouldn’t call it battle prowess. Anduin has received many forms of martial, arms and priestly training (Velen). He’s a friend of Baine and has received his fair share of martial training as the King's son.
Anduin is having trouble sleeping, having these visions and nightmares. He needs to understand what happened on the Broken Shore, but everyone is trying to protect him. He needed to go around and hear what his people were saying, he needed to disguise himself and see for himself and Genn handing him the Blade was that first moment of him coming into him becoming a man. We’re seeing a big shift for Anduin.
Q: Why those 6 allied races?
Shani Edwards: They liked those 6 from the start and a lot of it had to do with player feedback that wanted to be those races. They also wanted to do something new and cool and something that hadn’t existed before, which is where the Void Elf came from.
Why did Thalyssra ally with Horde? Will Alliance see that story unfolding?
A: Allied races have a strict set of prerequisites, primary one being questing. Nightborne quest will show that turning point for Horde (and Alliance will get a taste of that story too)
Do the Lightforged look down on the Faction war after fighting such a big battle?
A: The Lightforged do not look down on the faction war. The Lightforged are just another group of draenei who boarded the Naaru vessel when they left Argus. The Genedar then splits into two different ships (Xenedar and Genedar) and went their separate ways. When things went south for the Lightforged, the Draenei came to their help. When Legion ends, who’s their war with now? Who do they fight along side? With their family.
Anduin and Light versus Alleria with Void?
A: Anduin is still a priest, not a paladin. As a priest, he understands both sides in the priest discipline. Void is personified with evil, but it’s way more grey. Locus Walker was not the only one to control the void, and one day Alex hopes we visit the Void to see the horrors of the light. On this side we see the void rising up from planets with Old Gods and tentacles, but what about the other side? Is there a counter to that where planets are encased in crystalline mountains of pink and yellow narru plating and how tyrannical is that to the inhabitants of the void?
Were the Zandalari the most challenging because it doesn’t use another model like the other 5 allied races?
S: Most difficult because it’s a unique rig. It’s a modified Troll rig (straight, instead of hunch). Required a little more time on the touch ups. Same amount of time spent on them for customization options than the other allied races.
Also, it was revealed that Zandalari Druid models will have their own models and that the travel form is a Raptor.
Any hints to the future of allied races?
A:Let your imagination run wild. Then divide by 5.
Expanded Customization on existing races? Example: Lightforged beards on normal draenei?
S:Something they want to do, but focus is on allied races for now but something they do want to do.
Updates on Goblin/Worgen?
S: Its something they talk about every expansion and something they want to do.
A: We want to do it, it’s not off the table, just not yet.
What is their favorite zone aesthetic/color palette that differs from Legion?
S: Zandalari aesthetic with lots of blues, reds, golds.
A: Stormsong Valley- lures you into safety and welcoming and then the quillboar just annihilate you as they tend to do. Terrible.
Q: What is the relationship between Jaina and her mother? Would the Kul Tirans welcome her?
A: Do you think the big, burly sea dwelling humans of Kul Tiras would welcome her after knowing her history with Daelin Proudmoores death? Probably not. Who knows!
Kul Tiran vs Tirasian:
A: Kul Tiran, could be Alex’s accent though
Q: History of Kul Tiras with Alliance in recent years?
A: After Daelin, they just recessed back in. Lost a bunch of their ships, dragons, betrayal. A nation that lived on their own for 3k years, why do they need the Alliance? That’s the challenge of the story, to convince them to join the Alliance.
Also, the Kul Tiran burly human models are 100% new models, not re-rigged humans.
Q: With pirates as a threat will Bloodsail and Duke Falrevere appear:
A: Maybe some Bloodsail will appear.
Q: Where’s Dalaran and Khadgar?
A: Khadgar will be sent off soon(tm) and can do his awful dad puns and jokes until we need him again.
