Destruction hasn’t seen many changes since my
previous article
.
Calamità
was nerfed and we received 2 new talents,
Fuoco dell'Anima
and
Inferno
. That said, I’d like to focus this article on some of the thing I love about BFA, glaring issues that still remain, and a few solutions.
The Good
Calamità
nerfed from 100% of damage copied, to 60% of damage copied. A lot of the community had negative reactions to this change, but it’s actually something I’ve been asking for since the start of Warlords of Draenor. Destruction has long been completely unbalanceable due to its ability to do 100% burst damage to 2 targets.
Calamità
being brought down in power means Destruction’s ST and AoE can be buffed to a healthier state than they were in during previous expansions.
Fuoco dell'Anima
on T15. I like anything that changes up the monotony of just pressing
Incenerimento
for long periods of time, and I like mechanics that manipulate time even more. It’s nothing thought provoking, but it still feels good to switch up the buttons you press.
Combustione Interna
on T30. This talent has been very polarizing in the community. Some people love it, some people hate it. I love it. It’s similar to
Fuoco dell'Anima
, but in a slightly more thought provoking way. The effect happens when
Dardo del Caos
hits the target, so you can often times cast
Immolazione
after
Dardo del Caos
and refresh it before the
Dardo del Caos
hits.
Combustione dell'Ombra
. It’s currently in a pretty decent state. It provides a lot of instant cast GCDs giving Destruction some of the mobility it’s been lacking for several expansions. It’s a few percent behind on patchwerk, but if there are adds or a fair bit of movement it can pull ahead.
Rito del Sacrificio
on T90. It returns as an actually viable talent! We now once again have access to
Rito del Sacrificio
+
Barricata d'Ombra
+
Patto Oscuro
. Unlike previous times
Rito del Sacrificio
has been good, it’s not just always the best. It’s always a decision between controlled burst and sustained dps.
T100 Talents. What can I say, the row is just really well designed and balanced. All 3 talents are within 2% ST, and you get a choice between a powerful CD, a short duration rotational CD, and a constant passive. All 3 have value outside of ST as well.
The Bad
Fuoco dell'Anima
. It’s just slightly worse than
Estirpazione
and
Combustione Totale
, meaning it has no real use in PvE at current tuning.
Pioggia di Fuoco
. This is the big one. All of the exact same issues from legion are still here, and don’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.
Pioggia di Fuoco
is still an awful spell. It’s 8 seconds long baseline (the haste really doesn’t help much), has only an 8 yard radius, which is less than melee range, and costs 3/5ths of your total resources. Things constantly move in so many dungeons and affixes in BFA that it’s just impossible a lot of the time to get
Pioggia di Fuoco
to even do half the damage it should on paper. Not to mention the fact that most of the Humanoids in dungeons now run away when they’re near death for no apparent reason.
T60 Talents.
Inferno
is numerically awful, but the bigger issue is that it’s mechanically awful because it moves more of your damage into the unreliable
Pioggia di Fuoco
.
Fuoco e Zolfo
was overnerfed to a point where it’s just always bad in any situation no matter how many targets there are.
Cataclisma
is just always the best choice right now, and honestly I’m kind of fine with that.
Cataclisma
in combination with
Canalizzazione Fuoco Demoniaco
almost entirely makes up for how bad
Pioggia di Fuoco
is, and feels amazing to use.
Risucchio di Vita
. It just feels too weak. Right now you can expect it to be about 4.4% of your life healed per second, at an absolutely massive dps loss. Maybe in the context of Destruction also having
Salasso delle Anime
and Mastery, it’s fine for overall balance; but, it still feels incredibly weak.
The Solutions, maybe?
Fuoco dell'Anima
. Based on our simulations and dummy testing, it needs a sizeable buff of about 35.5% for it to be notably (2%) better than
Combustione Totale
ST. This tier (and Destruction talents in general) has a relatively low impact on dps, so it needs pretty dramatic changes to see results.
Fuoco dell'Anima
does pretty decent damage already, so they could try buffing the shards it gives. Buffing the shard gen to 6 puts it about 1% ahead of
Combustione Totale
. To get it up to 2% it would need another 15% damage buff on top of that.
Risucchio di Vita
. Buff the healing percentage so that it remains the impactful choice it should be between damage and healing.
Pioggia di Fuoco
. Buff the radius, reduce the duration, or both. There’s no good reason that
Pioggia di Fuoco
takes 8 seconds to do it’s damage at 0% haste. Even with a *very* sizeable 20% haste it’s still 6.67 seconds. There’s also no good reason that it has an 8 yard radius.
Pioggia di Stelle
is 8 seconds and 15y radius, with a talent that makes it 20% larger and lets you cast while moving in it.
Terremoto
is 6 seconds and 8y radius.
Morte e Distruzione
is 10 seconds and 8y radius, but has a talent that makes the radius increase.
Tormenta
is 8 seconds and 8y radius, but decreases the cooldown of a massive AoE CD every tick. The point I’m making here is that
Pioggia di Fuoco
is the worst targeted ground effect spell in the game.
Inferno
. Address the issues with
Pioggia di Fuoco
baseline and
Inferno
stops being awful. Alternately, you can throw the QoL
Pioggia di Fuoco
needs on
Inferno
, similarly to other spec’s talents. Make
Inferno
cut the duration of
Pioggia di Fuoco
in half, or increase the radius by some percentage, etc.
Fuoco e Zolfo
. It needs a pretty large buff to be in a decent state. It’s also pretty hard to say how big of a buff it needs to actually see play. Say you look at no cooldowns, 5 mobs in a pack, and it takes 30 seconds to kill the pack.
Fuoco e Zolfo
at 75% beats Cata by 5.5%. But if it takes 40 seconds to kill the pack it’s tied with Cata. And then the pack after might not be AoE and
Fuoco e Zolfo
might be less valuable. Plus, Cata gives ST dps that
Fuoco e Zolfo
doesn’t. Even at 75%,
Fuoco e Zolfo
is behind
Cataclisma
on 3 target. All I know is that it needs a large buff to the damage multiplier.
Some thoughts on pvp
Determinazione Assoluta
at 3 minutes makes us too vulnerable, but at 1 minute it was too powerful. 2 sounds like a sweet spot where we’re vulnerable but not for 3 entire minutes.
Succubus feels worthless. There’s just no world in which other players let your succubus (or you) channel the CC. It should really be an instant cast like
Accecamento
.
Paura
costs waaaaay too much mana. It’s 15% of mana compared to
Metamorfosi
’s 4%.
Baseline
Furia dell'Ombra
is amazing.
Combustione dell'Ombra
adds a lot of mobility that Destruction was lacking severely.
Fuoco dell'Anima
is a great addition. It particularly helps with
setups because it gives you a decent damaging ability you can
Calamità
.
