Anniefuchsia
interviewed Systems Designer Jay Gill about Battle for Azeroth.
Watch NEW CONTENT HYYPE w Jay Gill from AnnieFuchsia on www.twitch.tv
Some of the interview highlights covered classes--
class buffs
,
traits turned into talents
, and potential
utility
in Battle for Azeroth.
Class Buffs:
Class buffs
are some of the most familiar parts of a class--people like and miss those spells. There's also the familiar little ritual of casting the entire raid before you pull.
Previously, class buffs were removed because it was a complicated patchwork of things that all had same effect but overlapped, and it was confusing matrix to fill out.
Class buffs in the early version of Battle for Azeroth are simplified compared to original class buffs. Each class has a different effect.
They may iterate on certain buffs that seem uneven--for example in the current state, if a Warlock dies, you'd lose the effects of their buff, while if a Mage dies, you keep their buff.
It is undecided what the Shaman buff is. Current idea is that every class has one, but that could change.
Undecided if you can purge buffs in PvP.
Class Utility:
Class-specific utility is a big focus of what the dev team is trying to do--it's a bigger deal than the class buffs.
Classes will have strengths and weaknesses with utility, so they bring a unique advantage to a group.
It should feel like a certain subset of classes is great at a particular type of utility--but not everyone.
With different utility per class, you may have a difference dungeon experience and strategy based on the group comp and utility available.
Examples of this utility include Hibernate and Soothe returning to druids in the
Battle for Azeroth demo
.
Artifact Traits
Currently reviewing all of the traits to see which are most important that should remain and be evergreen. No all purpose solution.
Some traits have been
turned into talents
in the Battle for Azeroth demo.
Class Design:
Battle for Azeroth does not have a Legion-type project of opening up every spec for a revamp.
Class design is more of a continuation of what's been happening since Legion. A few classes will be targeted in rounds, similar to Discipline in 7.2.5, and Feral/Frost in 7.3.
Most rotations will stay the same in Battle for Azeroth, and the class team will identify which specs are the highest priority to change.
Class team is discussing walking back some homogenization, in the area of utility, right now.
No more updates on a revamped Combat Rez system for Mythic Dungeons yet.
Specific Classes:
Shadow Priest is a class they are possibly looking at, as there is a long ramp up into Void Form, which is a weakness in situations like Mythic Keystone trash, where short group combat is a very important mode of DPS.
Will Feral Druids use staves again? Probably, not sure.
Will Disc Priests become like Anduin with melee weapons? Damage while healing is the fantasy of Disc, melee while healing is Holy Paladin. Keeping that distinction.
No plans for Warlock Meta.
Generally pretty happy with healers.
is a talent with a dramatic effect. It may be reworked so it's more flexible to use, and less tight on ‘you must do a specific thing for a long time or you die.'
