While we wait for Patch 8.1 to go live, it is a good time to highlight a new tech change of the new patch: its new folder structure. Players that have had their games updated can already check the changes on their game folders.
Starting in Tides of Vengeance, all your WoW installs will have the same root folder, usually being
C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\
. Under this main root folder, there will be a couple different ones:
_retail_
- Files like Cache, Screenshots, and Addons for the live client
_ptr_
- Same as the retail folder, but for PTR. Only for players with that client installed.
Data
- All raw client data, like models and maps, for all clients is stored.
.build.info
which contains information about the installed clients
World of Warcraft Launcher
a shortcut to the Battle.net App
So, with these changes, all your screenshots and addon files and configurations will be under the
_retail_
folder of your WoW installation. Most addon managers are already prepared for this change and should support it without any configuration necessary.
While there is no official announcement, possibly this change may allow Blizzard to share data between PTR and Live installs, reducing the amount of data required to install or update them, as in many cases the data can be copied over from a different install to reduce the total download requirement.
