This recipe only drops from the Cobalt Mageweavers in the large cave area south of the lake in Winterspring. Farming (soloing) them was pretty easy for me as a shadow priest, but the large flying dragons and the melee dragonkin can be a bit more difficult.

The mageweavers also drop the arcanite dragonling recipe and all the dragonkin there have a chance to drop blue dragon sinew, which makes this a pretty good farming zone as both sell for a considerable amount on the AH.

The robe is actually one of my rare patterns that gets the most requests and even now there are few active tailors with the pattern learned since it is BOP and basically needs to be intentionally farmed for.

This is a very nice robe especially considering the mats required and the level of the item. I did a little work in southern Winterpspring grinding/questing and picked up this recipie.

Making robes and selling can provide good money and the robe doesn't look too shabby either. :-)

I went farming for this pattern on my main for my mage alt. Took about 20 kills, and the one it dropped from was inside the cave. Funny thing is a Mature Blue Dragon Sinew dropped from a Mageweaver just before the robe pattern did!

If you're ever bored and want to farm something that's stupid easy and actually worth some gold (55+ silver each) these guys are the ticket. Sort've brings back some nostalgia :P

I decided to get the pattern on behalf of one mage on my server, who wanted this "oldskool" robe. I went there with my 70 lock, clearing rapidly the mobs. The pattern, to my suprise, dropped very quickly, maybe 4th Cobalt Mageweaver or so. What's more, it dropped together with Recipe: Greater Arcane Protection Potion ^_^

I was farming the dragonkins purely to skin and the pattern dropped, shame is is BoP, but I'll just keep it in my bank until I become a tailor. I think rather than farm for the pattern itself, this goes for any intentionally farmed item, you should concentrate on getting something else that EVERY mob drops. e.g. I wanted a Depleted Badge, but I focused on getting netherweave. 800 netherweave, 100g, 2 blues, 20 odd greens, an epic and a rare enchant and jewelcrafting pattern later, it still hasn't dropped, but I easily made 1,000g... and no I'm not giving away the spot I farmed ^^

The drop rate is very high for an item thats pretty good. I have found 3 in a little less than 2hrs of farming. Too bad my hunter isn't a tailor.

My level 55 hunter got this off a level 58 elite cobalt dreamweaver. It dropped on the first try from the dreamweaver that was near a tree just as you first enter the area on your way to where the berzerker and moontouched owlkin are. :( I was so disappointed, why can't these types of mobs drop something I actually need? :P

this pattern is super easy to get. i was farming for the arcanite dragonling, and it this pattern dropped 3 times in a little over an hour.. no arcanite dragonling yet though..

I farmed for 1 hour today- got no rope but 3 Greater arcane protection potion recipies...
I´v read other places that this can be a very trickey drop.

I find it rather silly that pattern is still BoP. Blizz, remove soulbound crap, if needed lower drop chance to.

I got it yesterday from a dragonkin mage just outside the cave entrance. At first I was rather WTF is with this soulbound crap as I am not a tailor. But then I took it anyway.

This only show how inconsistent they are with anything that is pre-BC related.

BoP on all pre-BC items, patterns. recipes, ... especially if they are world drops should be removed / changed.

It would be very nice if I could transfer the pattern to another char at least trade it to someone who would want it.

57 Frost Spec Mage, was able to get the pattern to drop after 6th kill. It didn't drop from the outside mobs, but once I went into the cave, it dropped off the first Mageweaver I killed. I managed to loot him before getting pwned by the Elite pat and other nearby mobs. Very nice money making pattern.

It just dropped for me from an outside Mageweaver. So it will drop from any Cobalt Mageweaver whether in the cave or outside.

I used 1½ hour there, and grinded after this recipe.
I got 5 (Recipe: Greater Arcane Protection Potion).
They are also drops from the Cobalt Mageweaver, and got about same droprate.
My gues is, its random wich of the 2 recipes you get from them.
After 1½ hours 2 Cobalt Mageweaver dropped the right recipe for me in a robe.
An advice is to kill all elites, to make the Cobalt Mageweaver spawn faster.

Yesterday I asked one of my friend to farm this recipe out for my shadow priest alt. The 2nd Mageweaver mob dropped it, then we cleaned out the cave and a second one dropped in 5-10 mins. One or two other recipes also dropped in this time. (And a bunch of blue dragonscales, maybe the best spot for it)

I just had this drop for me on the beta, but its listed as 33 spell power not 40 Frost/Shadow spell power which is currently listed on WoW Head for both the robe and the recipe.

I don't know about 7% drop rate. I've been farming these guys for a few hours and killed 20-40 and I've had 10 or so drop.

I could not believe my good fortune last night. I was in the area looking for Brumeran for a quest and knew about the Cobalt Mageweavers dropping this pattern, but they are 57-58 elite and I am currently 57 shadow priest. A 57 paladin just happened to come by and I asked if she was also looking for Brumeran. Answer: yes. We grouped and while looking I told her about the BOP pattern drop and asked if she would mind both of us killing one of them that was nearby. She said, "Sure." We killed one and the pattern dropped. Paladin laughed and I cheered. Amazing! Very easy kill with both of us.

I'm guessing it's called Winter Night because it has bonuses to Frost and Shadow damage, not because the drop rate increases at night...

Well i can say this a tough farm, for a frost mage anyway.

1) The mageweavers are quite rare here, maybe 1/5 is a mageweaver.
2) After you kill one, it respawns as a different type of cobalt. This means u have to kill all kinds of mobs here in order to get mageweavers to spawn.
3) The other mobs are quite tough to kill, even for a lvl60 mage. The mageweavers are quite easy if u use frost ward and ice barrier, get in close with fireblasts/scorch/fireball, but the other mobs hit hard and are resisty.
4) the drop rate is less than 2%, which means the average player will kill 50 before they get the pattern. So until u have killed 50 you cant say you are unlucky. Its hard to find 50 :D

I registered just to share my pain on getting that item. almost 3 days now, 3 days of which I have spent a lot of time online. I lost count after 100 mobs... which was very long time ago. I have never left the place other than for emptying bags in everlook. Found 7 recipes for that arcane potion 1 pattern for throium leggings, 3 mithril lockboxes, 20+ random green drops, 1 serpentine sash, and I have made more than 100g simply by selling the vendor gray items :x

I really can't believe that its droprate is as high as thottbot claims it to be.

Not even sure anymore but I think that I now possess 9 recipes for greater arcanite protection potion, found 2 more thorium lockboxes, um I'd say around 10 green items, a few gems, as always #$%^load of gray items and cash, well, but just as to prove that my insane farming for that recipe isn't completely useless I found one epic sinew too :), but still no Pattern for Robe of Winter Night.

Something new, Haven't found even a single greater arcanite protection potion recipe today, but I did find yet another thorium lockbox, Pattern for felcoth shoulders, of course a lot of greens and grays, and well what do you say, 2nd Blue Mature Dragon Sinew in two days, but still no pattern that I am after, I was about to give up when I read that the guy who posted after me claimed that there indeed still exists such a pattern >.<

I've been farming for this for who knows how long, a few hours a day for sure, I have found an insane amount of other recipes and patterns, I can't count how many greens, The "rare" elite mob I have killed more than 20 times by now, The funny thing is though, that I have by now found 6 Mature Blue Dragon Sinews while hunting for the drop, sure it has made the hunters in my guild happy and by selling a few I have made decent money, but comparing the droprates, by the time I have 6 Mature Blue Dragon Sinews I should have around 120 Patterns: Robe of Winter Night, not having a single one is not unluck, its pure insanity

I have looked for this pattern for waaaaay too long with my priest. I have been to the cave, inside out at least 20 times, if not (more than likely) more, and still no pattern. I have found like 6 of the Greater Arcane Protection Potion Recipes, a couple of different engineering schematics, and at least 10 other greens, and a couple of blues. I know, I know.... as soon as I leave, some lucky son of a you-know-what finds it on their first kill, but this is ridiculous! When I go farming for it, I am there for at least 3 hours each time. I even pulled two different 6 hour straight search and no find missions. So good luck to whoever the next lucky bearer of the Robe of Winter Night Pattern is. Just remember it's BOP, so if there is a tailor in your group, let them have it as it won't do anyone else any good. My priest is a level 60 shadow priest, with just one epic-- a Glowing Brightwood staff with +22 int on it, and only half of her devout set (all the rest are blues, though), and she can solo all but the huge flying dragons inside and out of Mazthoril just fine. That is, as long as it is one at a time, or just one set of 3 of the little flying guys. She may come mighty close to biting it, and has to eat and drink after every fight, but I haven't died very many times other than when Spellmaw or Brumeran comes along at an extremely inopportune moment.

I think I've spent a total of about 8 hours farming for this but got it in the end. :D Found that the Mageweavers tend to spawn a lot less than the Scalebanes and Wyrmkin, and I agree with someone here; the hardest mobs for a mage (particularly me being a frost mage) are those pesky tiny dragon things.

Wewt...3rd day Finally droped..off and on grinding between BG's and what not.. 4 recipes of Greater Arcane Protection droped..2 hand fulls of greys and a handfull of greens which i d/e'd Made a Grib of G tho :D it'll finally drop.. just gotta kill everything.. ...Funny part was I logged of 1 of the computers cause the Video card was over heating..I took a 20 min break , logged back on, on another computer, and Killed the first mageweaveer I saw and it droped.. was rather stoked.. so Good luck adveturers, Cashe and Prizes await those who seek it and are patient

I've spent the last 3 days farming this Pattern. And I've had 3 Recipe: Greater Arcane Protection Potion Drop off these guys. I'm at a combined of 4 hours farming and still no drop. Just give me my pattern!

Ok so here is the good news and the bad.

I have been farming these crazy creatures for about 7 hours now. This pattern dropped, fortunately we had a taylor with us to pick this up.

Unfortunately we were not out farming this pattern, we are farming for the Greater Arcane Resistance potion. After all these kills and hours we still don't have what we want.

There are a lot of lucky people in this thread. I've been grinding away at Mazthoril on all my non-raiding hours for the past two weeks and still no pattern. It's slowly eroding away at my sanity and ticking me off a bit.

On the up side, I've found enough recipes for Greater Arcane Protection potion to supply half the server with it. /sarcasm

dropped for me on the 26th mageweaver. others are correct, u must kill the more common cobalts as the mageweavers spawn more infrequently.

total cobalts killed might be close to 75, all killed outside of the cave.

got some nice drops but certainly not enough to make me want to go back! :-)

tough grind, but worth it imho.

My husband and I went in search of this last night..I'm a high level tailor, and I have most of the rarer items. Wanted to add this to my collection. We entered the cave because there seemed to be a much higher concentration of the magweavers in there. We killed maybe 4 when the alchemy reciped dropped...good for my husband as he is an alchemist. We killed maybe 3 more and found yet another alechemy recipe...lol...AH fodder. Killed maybe 4 more mageweavers and the pattern dropped! I'd say we were at it less than 30 minutes. So, look me up on Silver Hand if you'd like a robe. :)

Can confirm that the Mageweave share the spawn with the Scalebane. Killed some Scalebanes to get more Mageweavers to spawn.

There is no point in killing the Cobalts deep inside the cave, simply kill the 3-4 inside the first room u enter, and ofc the ones outside the cave.

Respawn time is actually fast, between 6-7 mins.

Killed 9 Cobalt Mageweavers then the pattern dropped

Tried going for this as a 53 Warlock, couldn't solo the red elites. Came back as 54, killed 3 or 4 mageweavers in tough battles, then saw a 70 Hunter tearing these apart and was skinning them. I asked him if I could join his group, told him I was looking for a rare bop tailoring pattern... he linked it, it had dropped from the mob he just killed... I joined anyway, we fought down to the named elites in the cave, the last mob before the boss dropped it, and I got it :)

Mats kinda hard to get, considering that this is replaced almost immediately when you get to outland, but it still looks nice, and isn't too bad

I got the robe pattern and the arcane protection potion recipe on the same kill. It was the second mageweaver I killed (level 57 shadow priest). Easy.

i was out farming rugged leather and scales when this pattern droped twice on my non- tailor hunter from the mageweavers once inside the cave and once outside. I wanted this pattern so badly for my tailor I took her over to the cave as soon as. I managed to get the pattern from a mageweaver inside the cave the total mageweavers I killed was about 3, I will also add that it was quite late in the night so not sure if that makes any difference. good luck farming those who want - it does appear that the drop rate was working in my favor tonight. also just a final note I am on aszune server.

This really is a pain in the rear end to get. I've been farming them for over 20 hours now, if not any more, and I have yet to see it drop. I've got 4 Greater Arcane Protection recipes off those guys, I even got an Eye of Shadow while grinding, but I have yet to see this drop...

This pattern is driving me NUTS! I've spent nearly 20 hours farming these things, and I've found:

1 Blue wand
8 Greater Arcane Protection Potion recipes
1 Arcanite Dragonling schematic
2 Travelers backpacks
1 Aegis of Stormwind

And I have yet to find this pattern. It's not even about the robes any more, it's the principle of the thing!

First my 70 war went farming for it...... got 4 of the potion recipes before realizing, thankfully before the pattern dropped, that it was a BoP pattern. Probably killed 15 mageweavers with no drop at this point.

So, I went and got my 53 lock and a 70 friend, and managed to avoid getting smashed while looking for the suddenly-rare mageweavers - even had one disappear from right in front of me as we were targetting it, very strange.

Dropped off of about the 10th mageweaver finally.

Took me like 3 Days of Farming to get the Robe-Pattern to drop. The worst thing about this farm is that the Mageweavers are pretty rare and you have to kill all Elites to make them spawn.

I had a weird suspicion that they would drop late at night for me and they did, around 3:00am. It seems like a lot of other people who end up actually getting this pattern get it late at night/early in the morning... hmmm...
Definitely not saying these will NOT drop during the day, but 'ya know, programmers put in some pretty weird stuff sometimes that we may never find out about.

Finally got this after 3 days of relentless farming as shadow priest lvl 60.
I found out that the fastest way was clearing the tunnel back and forth, this way you also avoid strong not-soloable elites like Spellmaw. Elite re-spawn rates are quite fast and the cave has a lot of spawn points on small area. This way you find enough Mageweavers to kill. Happy farming!

As a frost mage, all the cobalts suck, they resist about 20-25% of spells, but the mageweavers resist counterspell about 60% of the time, and resist spells about 30-35%. I started at level 57, and it doesn't get much better with levels. You have to tank the damage with frost ward and ice barrier, so they take about 75% of your mana to kill, sometimes if the rng isnt in your favor, they will kill you and you wont be able to do anything about it(around 3 times for me).

But the whelps are the worst, they resist cc, burn mana, do splash damage while you are slowed. Depending on the pack you get, you have a better chance of killing 2 elite cobalts than reliably kill whelps without using pots and all your cooldowns. Going into the cave isn't really an option since some spawn points are shared with whelps. Your best bet is to stay outside and farm the 6-7 on the on the left side, from the entrance of the cave to the farthest point back, where you see spellmaw every few minutes, reminding you of your failure, and also gives you the chance to escape if the resists are just way too high.

I have the worst luck, so here is my final tally:

Around 100g in silver and greys

WoW Classic update as of 2020 May 12

Decided to start farming these on my 53 shadow priest today with a 60 hunter (hoping for a blue sinew) and 60 rogue (hoping to beat the hunter on the sinew and sell it to him for 300g).

We farmed for about 1 hour running back and forth in the cave not really getting anything, then just as I was about to log off for a meeting we got 4 of this pattern off 4 mageweavers. I only needed the one of course, but greed-roll won the other 3 as well.

Also during that last 5 minutes we got the alchemy recipe for Greater Arcane Protection Potion which I greed won.

During this hour we also got 4 greens. No other 'blue' items or anything else noteworthy.

Killed 350 Mageweavers till this pattern drops. I think the drop chances on wowhead are completely off.

Although got 11 Recipe: Greater Arcane Protection Potion, so its droprate is more about 3% then 9% drop chance.

As all the comments suggest this recipe can be a painful grind. I unfortunately don't have any stats to share (mobs killed, time spent, gold from vendored items, etc.), but hopefully I can share some information that may help some people kill these elites. I originally tried farming the elites OUTSIDE the cave - basically making a big loop around the area where the cobalt mageweavers spawn. I wanted to avoid killing the packs of whelps because they aggro as a pack of three and cast spells that can slow, root, drain your mana, or devour your magic buffs. You have to kill every elite dragonkin in order for the mageweavers to spawn, which means you have to deal with the cobalt scalebanes and wyrmkin. After four farming sessions and a few corpse runs I gave up.

Then a few weeks later I decided to try again, this time I wanted to farm them INSIDE the cave hoping the dynamic respawning will get more more spawns overall. There is a spot near the mouth of the cave off to the right (your character facing the entrance of the cave) where you can kite mobs around the terrain where you can take advantage of the mob pathing and preserve some of your mana. My strategy now was clear the mouth of cave, drag the scalebanes and wyrmkin to the kiting point, dot them up, and damage them as they path back and forth. While this didn't shorten my kill times, this did leave me with a lot more health and mana in between pulls and now let me kill 2-3 scalebanes/wyrmkin (sometimes at the same time) before having to stop to eat and drink. After two more farming sessions the recipe dropped! I probably consumed somewhere between 25-30 stacks of water and 10 stacks of food trying to solo these mobs myself. One negative part about farming the elites inside the cave are that the packs of whelps do occasionally replace a spawn for an elite mob - farming them outside the cave, this was not the case. So you do need to clear the whelp packs in the cave as annoying as they are.

As a shadow priest this strategy of clearing the elites for the mageweavers to spawn worked great, however with other classes your mileage may vary. Good luck on the farming!
