Tips for winning:

Set your hearthstone in Booty Bay.
Know which prize you want prior to handing in so that you can hand in as fast as possible.
Don't fish where other people are fishing.
Mount up and fish somewhere else if someone starts fishing in your pool.
Move between pools as fast as possible.
It is rumored that there are slightly more pools at the lower half of Stranglethorn than the upper half.
If you're not sure if your bobber landed in the pool (eg. it's on the very edge) recast. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Some more tips to the above:

Learn the Find Fish ability
Do not run far away searching for new pools, wait for the pools to spawn around you
Buy Elixir of Water Walking and have it on all the time
Buy Swiftness Potion if your class does not have any speedrun spells for quick quest turn-in
It's better to come to the area around 10-15 minutes early, so other players would move away after seeing you
Turn off all global chat channels, they are usually very distracting

I've won it on my first try yesterday :) I was alone fishing on the Wild Shore. It's an area where Bloodsail Buccaneers and their fleet are. When you come through the tunnel that leads you outside of Booty Bay, turn right and get to the shore. I had an area of 5-6 pools where I was roaming around fishing.

I can confirm in Classic Wotlk there are only 2 rewards for winning first place in this contest. The fishing rod and the trinket that turns you into a fish. You cannot win the BOA ring in Wrath Classic. I just won first place today in hopes that I could get the BOA ring since it was posted above but it's not added until Mist of Pandaria to the STV fishing extravaganza.

If you aren't the first to catch and return the Speckled Tastyfish, don't fret - 50 players per region also get Master Angler of Azeroth, and you can sell your remaining Tastyfish to Jang!

This does not seem to be correct. Does anyone have more or better information?
