I'm guessing this is the Blizzard version of the Central American holiday Día de los Muertos or "Day of the Dead" where people honor their dead relatives, saints, and anyone else of importance.

Definately refers to the "Day of the Dead" in Mexico as the quest is to dance with Catrina. This refers to La Calavera Catrina. More about this can be read on Wiki.

It IS an intentional Oingo Boingo reference (in addition to the holiday), though. A similar reference exists in Tirisfal Glades, where undead NPCs named similar to the bandmembers are hanging around having . . . a dead man's party.

This is obviously a very direct reference to La Calavera Catrina originally an etching by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada. This is a common basis for Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) decoration and ceremonies.

Anyone who took Spanish in high school might also be reminded of the educational series La Catrina, in which there is one memorably comical scene where there is a dancing skeleton marionette.

Here's the thing, though: Oingo Boingo celebrated Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) every year, holding their biggest concerts every year during the festival, even when they weren't touring at the time. They held their final concert during the Dia de los Muertos festival, and the promotional material and merchandise from that concert use Dia de los Muertos imagery and say Dia de los Muertos on them.

So it's not like the connection between their song "Dead Man's Party" and the holiday is purely coincidental. The idea that Blizzard would pick "Dead Man's Party" for a Day of the Dead holiday achievement and for it to not be a reference to Oingo Boingo's song is harder to believe than that it would be.

Also, I know some body at Blizzard is a Boingo fan. On your way to Brill from the forsaken starter zone you see all four of the main band (minus the horn section) as forsaken. Makes me smile when ever i see them.

And, if you approach Catrina in the midst of this merriment, select her, and type /dance in honor of the fallen, you will be granted an achievement and a 12-hour buff, Honor the Dead, which will change your appearance to that of Catrina or Chapman, the graveyard vendor who also appears during this holiday.

The Grateful Dead
Purchase some Orange Marigold or a Bouquet of Orange Marigolds from Chapman and use them to see the otherwise invisible spirit in the graveyard.

" 'It's good to visit with friends and family again, though I may have overdone it... I've already eaten everything they made for me', says the Cheerful Human Spirit. 'Might I trouble you for some of that delicious Bread of the Dead? I'd be most grateful. Chapman there sells the recipe, I think. ' "

Acquire some Bread of the Dead and give it to the Cheerful Spirit.

Your reward is a Macabre Marionette, a sombrero-wearing, maraca-wielding skeleton companion pet. This pet can only be used during the Day of the Dead event; it cannot be learned and kept like other companion pets.

To get the Marionette pet (Which you can only use during the Day of the Dead), you must visit the closest graveyard to your race's capital city. For example, Draenei go to Exodar. You must bring 1x for the turn in.

The Marionette pet is only temporary, and it can be obtained at the Dalaran Graveyard, where Catrina also happens to be. The graveyard is next to the sewer enterance.

Just clarifying the quest. You can only get it from your home faction. I'm a night elf, and I couldn't get the quest at Ironforge or Stormwind graveyards, only Darnassus.

For the day of the dead achievements , go to the graveyard for your home city. There you can dance with Catrina. Also you can buy a thing off the vendor to detect invisibility, which will let you see a quest.

Catrina can be found at the graveyard near capital cities.

To get the the pet Macabre Marionette go to the graveyard at your racial capital, buy the recipe for Bread of the Dead and make one. (only takes 1 simple flour and 1 ice cold milk)
Then buy an Orange Marigold or a Bouquet of Orange Marigolds and use it to see the ghosts at the graveyard.
One of the ghosts will give you a quest that will reward you the pet for the bread.

Very easy achievement - go to any graveyard attached to a major city, click on Catrina then type /dance. Only snag - you can only do it on the 1st November.

If you want a Macabre Marionette you'll have to go to the graveyard of your home city (e.g. I'm a dwarf so i had to go to Ironforge). Find the guy called Chapman and buy a Bouquet of Orange Marigolds and Recipe: Bread of the Dead. You'll also need a Simple Flour and an Ice Cold Milk to make the recipe. (Buy these from anyone selling Cooking Supplies.) You can only cook it on a Ghostly Cooking Fire which you'll find in the graveyards. Use the Marigolds to see the Cheerful Spirit who'll have a quest 'The Grateful Dead' - give him some Bread of the Dead to get your Marionette.

NB: The Ironforge Graveyard is just round the corner from the entrance - Catrina is at 54.0, 38.6 in Dun Morogh.

This is a 2 day festival, nov 1st and second

I am a NE and got the Achievement outside IF. I went to GY below Lageran first, she was not there.

Exit IF gates, this is where the duelling takes place on 98% of servers, go left, slightly up a hill.

Dance with Catrina. Get achieve.

While you are at it spend some coin on lanterns, flowers, mask, learn the recepie, you'll need it if you want to do the Q and get the minipet.

After my trip to IF, I treked to Darny, looked up some ghosts, got the Q, gave bread(from the DotD recepie sold by vendor close by Catrina) and got the 2-two-day minipet. Really cool mini skelli with sombrero and 'shakers'. For the love of Elune, I cannot remember what they are called :)

Go to city of your faction for the Q and 2 day minipet, achieve at most citys GY's

Catrina Location:

She is located in graveyards outside of every major city, both Horde and Alliance!
She will be standing there in the form of an undead, dancing.
To get the achievement, simply do /dance on her!
You will also get a nice 12 hour buff named "Honor the Dead" which is simply you honoring the dead!

Quest:

If you use either a Bouquet of Orange Marigolds or an Orange Marigold (bought from the vendor there) you will be able to see a bunch of spirits. One of them is a quest giver and will give you a quest named "The Grateful Dead". Long story short, they want you to give them some Bread of the Dead. When you complete the quest you will be awarded with either exp or money depending on your level and a Macabre Marionette which is some kind of pet which requires the Day of the Dead. This probably means that it's not usable after the Day of the Dead.

There will also be another NPC named Chapman who is the <Day of the Dead Vendor> standing there selling the items:

Catrina may be found at the following locations:

In Dalaran, east of the Violet Citadel in front of the big tree (35,39)
In Terokkar Forest, just east of Shattrath City (40,22)
<H> Inside the Ruins of Lordaeron.
<H> Outside Silvermoon (just east of the Ruins at 47,49)
<H> Outside of Thunder Bluff, on the ground north of the city, at the base of the northern lift from the middle rise (57,18)
<H> In Durotar, south of Orgrimmar at 47,17

Just walk up to Catrina at any of these locations and /dance!

Note: For those wanting to do The Grateful Dead, you'll need to bake some Bread of the Dead. You can buy the recipe from Chapman (standing next to Catrina). Baking the bread requires the special Ghostly Cooking Fire located next to Catrina, so be sure to bring some Milk and Flour -- it'll save you a trip.

For those going for Chef de Cuisine (or the sub-achievements) note that the Bread of the Dead recipe counts.

The Grateful Dead may be performed in Dalaran, in Shattrath, or at the graveyard of your race's capitol (Orgrimmar for Trolls). (This quest can only be completed one time at one of these locations!) This quest requires 1 Bread of the Dead and yields experience (21,150 at level 76) and a Macabre Marionette. In order to see the quest giver you must purchase an Orange Marigold from Chapman and use it while standing beside him and Catrina.

Note: You can lose the Marigold, Bread of the Dead, Macabre Marionette, and any other items specific to Day of the Dead by simply using your hearthstone or a portal. (Note that this is not consistent - I ported from Dal to Shat with everything intact, but the port from Shat to TB caused me to lose everything.) This may be a bug, may be intentional, but it has been verified by numerous people at this point so just be aware.

Coords for Darnassus Graveyard are definitely 77, 26 with some give and take. To get the ice cold milk go to the vendor in the inn and for the simple flour go to the man who sells cooking supplies :D The marionette is easy to get just buy the flowers to see the guy. IDK if the guy appears in the same spot everytime or whatnot but I know for me he appeared on the left side of the graveyard... >.> May help save time since if I am not mistaken the marigold thing does not last long (30 seconds but can be repeated if weren't fast enough with the same/original bouquet! BTW Bouquet can be sold back for 25silver)... Also for those worrying about cost ice cold milk was 1 silver 5 copper, the marigolds were 1 gold and the flour was 21 copper (or something really really minimal) Hope someone finds this useful! Love my marionette :P

Unfortunately, the 12 hours buff gets canceled if you fly off from Dalaran.

Not if you use the flightmaster, not if you use the portal to another city, not if you use a mage portal. None of the above will cancel it. It gets however canceled if you use your own flying mount to fly away from Krasus' Landing. You can of course go back and dance again to get the buff back, but it's still annoying. Probably a bug.

You can fly to the nearest flight point and then use your flying mount, you will keep the buff. Upon entering dalaran area tho (Crystalsong Forest) on your own flying mount, the buff will get canceled again.

I did the quest fine in dalaran and I am draenei. You can do it in Dalaran regarding of your race, don't need to go to your specific capital city.

The SMC graveyard is just east of the southern entrance to Falconwing Square. Run out of Silvermoon and follow the wall across the dead scar, and Catrina is at 48.50 in Eversong Woods.
The UC graveyard is in the Ruins of Lordaeron across from the SMC teleportation orb, and Catrina is at 68.12 in UC.
The TB graveyard is at the base of the elevators leading off from the middle bluff, Catrina is at 56.18 in TB.
The Org graveyard is on the left side of the road from Org leading to Razor Hill, Catrina is at 47.18 in Durotar.

This achievement can be done at any graveyard, but you need to go to your race's home city graveyard to do The Grateful Dead quest; if you are a Blood Elf you must go to Silvermoon City, Orcs and Trolls to Orgrimmar, Undead to Undercity, and Tauren to Thunder Bluff. However, you can get the items from the Chapman at any GY. Once you have the bread and one of the marigold flowers, talk to the Cheerful (Your Race Here) Spirit who is standing next to its portrait to do the quest and receive Macabre Marionette.

Fastest way if you have access to Dalaran:

1) Buy Simple Flour and Ice Cold Milk. (Flour can be bought in Dalaran, milk can't.)
2) Find a Cooking Trainer and learn cooking level 1.
3) Go find Catrina in Dalaran in the grass patch to the right side of the Violet Citadel. Coords:
4) Target Catrina and do /dance to get the achievement.
5) Buy a Marigold/ Bouquet of Marigolds and Recipe: Bread of the Dead from Chapman, the vendor beside her.
6) Cook some Bread of the Dead (you only need 1).
7) Use the Marigold. You should now see spirits around you, one of them with a quest.
8) Take the quest, turn in the Bread of the Dead, receive your pet.
9) (Optional) Give any leftover Bread of the Dead to the new arrivals at the graveyard and make new friends.

If you don't have access to Dalaran, follow the above instructions for your home city.

Why isn't the vendor or the items he sells listed on wowhead? Is everyone so busy with 3.3 patch that world events get lost in the shuffle? Sad really.

For those of you like me that don't have the locations of all the starting graveyards memorized, here is the list:

Horde

Silvermoon (Blood Elf): 48,49 in Eversong Woods - West side of the dead scar near the city wall.
Undercity (Undead): Just inside the Ruins of Lordaeron in the courtyard. Definitely the easiest to find.
Orgrimmar (Orc, Troll): 47,17 in Durotar - East side of the road as you head south out of the gates of Orgrimmar.
Thunder Bluff (Tauren): 56, 18 in "Thunder Bluff" zone or 41,19 in "Mulgore" zone - just north of the North Great Lift in Thunder Bluff.

Alliance

Darnassus (Night Elf): 77,25 in Darnassus - Head East on the road and just past the Warrior's Terrace it is on your left.
Stormwind (Humans): 39,59 in Elwynn Forest - Just follow the road out of Stormwind South and it is on the West side before Goldshire.
Exodar (Draenei): 47,56 in Azuremyst Isle - Take the road East out of the Exodar and it is on the right as you reach Azure Watch.
Ironforge (Dwarf, Gnome): 54,39 in Dun Morough- Upon exiting the Gates of Ironforge turn left and follow the road around the side of the mountain.

Note that the bread is bugged.. if you try to mail it to another character, that person will disconnect when trying to take it from the mail. Also the marionette puppet disappears from your inventory if you log out.

I would like to note that the Macabre Marionette is not a pet. You cannot summon it from your Companion tab, nor does it count for any achievements.

It seems that you can get the quest only from a spirit of your own race, so you would have to go to the graveyard of the major city that you belong to.

This is mostly true. The quest can also be received from the spirits in Dalaran; however, there aren't any vendors in Dalaran that sell Ice Cold Milk, so you may end up needing to go to a capital city anyway. (I personally mailed some with my bank alt.)

For those of you who didn't realize (like me) if you are undead the Undercity cemetary they refer to is in the Ruins of Lordaeron, not Brill like I originally thought. Catrina is dancing on the left as you come in to the cemetary. Hope this saves some people from wandering Brill needlessly.

Not very many times does one in their lifetime actually take time to honour and celebrate the dead in their adventures. We are found celebrating harvest and love, but not very often do we do what Catrina has been doing the past 2 days: Cherishing and honouring those who have passed on, allowing them to eat, drink, smile, and dance among those who love them.

The pure emotion shown by Catrina to actually celebrate and dance with those who have died but rise again, even though it's only for several days? It speaks the world to me.

Know that you are not alone in your honouring of the past, Catrina!
