This trinket is a reward from the Dragonmaw Race quests which, towards the end, aren't easy at all even with a riding crop, without I'm guessing it's hardly possible (admitedly I haven't tried). So each player will most likely still need to acquire their riding crop before being able to get their Skybreaker Whip anyway, so I don't see how this will have any impact for LWers at all... Omiting the odd lucky exceptions...

I have tried this quests a few times so far, with a Riding Crop equipped, and found out I was just as fast as Skyshatter. I thought he might attune his speed to mine but reading previous comments I think he's at 290% standard.
And it really is a bloody shame these trinkets don't stack. I honestly don't feel like trying harder now I know it doesn't.. if it's only for some rep and gold then why botter getting that trinket if it doesn't improve anything.. Blizz might want to change this reward or make it stack cause this is dull.
Was thinking they'd give people an opportunity to be as fast as pala's, guess not.
To get back to the flight: it really helps if you know how he's flying, I always stay ahead of him, slightly attuning hight etc. The bombs can't reach you if you're in front of him and a bit higher as well.

I'm willing to bet they threw this in there in case a 70 decided not to get a crop (which is entirely possible, though unlikely). Without the reward, you couldn't complete the end race.

It would be nice if this was a quest-only item that despawned after you won and would only show up if you didn't have a Riding Crop.

I vendored my Ridig Crop then I get this one. Riding crop is just crafted trinket but this show that you are a bit good in flying. =)

I completed the trials without having a Riding Crop so this was quite nice. The last flight took a few tries as it's pretty tough to keep up with him, but doable after some practise. Also I didn't fly ahead of him, just cutting the corners and following him closely (but not too close) worked fine for me.

Before people start cluttering this with the standard mount speed is multiplied comment, read this.

Mount Speeds are additive and no matter what WoWWiki said, the devs have clearly stated on the official forums that it is not multiplied. If you have an epic flying mount with a crop, you fly at 390% speed not 418%. Check the WoW Forums or the official site in the flying mount section. Taken from the official site, "When using the riding crop, the epic flying mount is only 10% slower than the flying mount taxis!" Also, as stated, the taxi's move at 400%, so it is clear and proven that it is additive and not multiplied.

This quest comes down to 2 things. Reputation with Netherwing and some pocket money.

If you never had a riding crop or carrot on a stick, I can't imagine that number being higher than average, then this quest is for you. A ton of patience, a new keyboard or two and you’re fine.

For those of us who: Have little patience, hate bugged quests, own riding crops, and don't care if we get Netherwing rep as quickly as possible, you shouldn't loose too much sleep over this quest.

I like many others before me, went nearly insane trying to finish this quest line. The races before Mulverik and SB were fun and kept me entertained quite a bit. The last two, I could have done with out. Mulv's race gives you 500 rep (the equiv of two eggs) and the Skybreaker race is 1000 rep and a riding crop. In the time and patience it took to finish these I could have just farmed eggs or completed other dailies. 1500 rep for a lot of time and lost patience seems not all that worth the effort. Don't get me wrong, I did finish both races, but looking back, I would not recommend these quests to the short tempered. I would wait until Blizz got enough tickets to fix it because as it is, it's bad. Just to clarify, 1k rep is 2 bars at honored. 2 as in dos.

So in closing, if your looking for a quick Netherwing rep gring-- go for it, but make sure the wife and kids are away from your computer. If your casually building Netherwing rep and really don't care about getting your mount asap, skip these or try them sparingly.

The quest reward-- does not stack with other speed increasing stuff
The money is pocket change considering your investment into riding skill
The rep can be made up elsewhere or at most, will tack on a day or two more before you get your mount.

Perhaps this is useless once you have riding crop, but I'd keep it for the sentimental value. Every time I would look at it, I'd remember how, against all odds, I defeated the Captain of Netherwing.

Looks like this, along with the other mount trinkets, are getting a huge buff & nerf all rolled into one ball of "Wait... what?" in 2.4.2

Tooltip for the Skybreaker Whip: "Permanently enchant a mount to increase its mounted speed by 10%. You may only enchant mounts in your own inventory, and enchanting your mount will cause it to become soulbound. Single use."

I have been using Ring Crop for a long time and I'm also using boots with Mithril Spurs but never checked if they stacked. Do they help raise mount speed combined?

Ok isnt this faster than Crusader Aura(CA)while using and epic flying mount?
CA is 20% mounted speed so...
CA is 280+20%=300 right?
and the Skybreaker Whip(SW) 10% Mount so...
SW would be 280+(280x.1)=308% (.1 is 10%)
So really a riding crop and the whip are better while using a epic flying mount....
Right?

I personally propose we start a petition with Blizzard...stacking the crop and the whip is pushing it, with the speed increase and conceptually (having a beating stick and a whip and them both making the animal faster individually does not equal out to 0, lol) but frankly I believe that should you actually go through the trouble of completeing this heinous chain the whip should stack with the carrot and the spurs...Not OP movement increase, but still practically rewarding.

As of WotLK, this and all other riding trinkets (Riding Crop, Carrot On a Stick) will have a "Use:" ability that allows them to be permanently applied to a mount (thus you can have one trinket or get one per mount).

Okay, so. The max mount speed increasement you can get from items is 10%, right?

So my question is, does that stack with the Hunter Talent Animal Handler?

edit: Before someone mentions, I did read the "This effect does not stack..." part. Just that I've had people saying it stacks and some saying it doesn't and wanted to be sure.

In the current Wrath of the Lich King Beta build 8982, the Skybreaker Whip no longer works for players above level 70.

Equip: Increases mount speed by 10%. Does not work for players above level 70.

Is there..... any point in this item? Considering all the enemy's on Netherwing Ledge are pretty much all around 70 and above, you would be level 70 and above on completing this quest.

Also considering the difficulty of the quest, this item is pretty much a slap in the face.

I just noticed this thing no longer works! OMG WTF this thing was a royal pain in the A S S to get... why is it no longer functional Blizzard... why? It's one of the few things in game that took perseverance to get ahold of... /sigh

I don't get why its a level 70 cap...what is the difference between a 70 with a 280% mount and an 80 with a 280% mount? Illogical logic is illogical.

Blizzard, in my opinion, should make it to where you can whip your mount since it is a whip. It'd be hilarious. In compensation, they could remove the speed increase since usually you'd be above 70 when you get this, but maybe not. Still be hilarious to see someone whip their mount.

It is understandable that Blizzard does not want equipment like this and Riding Crop to stack. My only gripe is that this isn't even an improvement. Yes, if it was 20% pallies would be useless once more, but is it not reasonable to put this at +15%.

Considering you basically need the Riding Crop to defeat Skyshatter (otherwise memorizing his course in numerous attempts), this questline has little value other than to further reputation.

This needs to be brought up on the forums if it hasn't been already. It is a useless reward since you almost certainly need the riding crop to beat the guy. I have tried several times and he is damn hard to keep up with even with the crop equipped.

done whole chain with only a carrot on a stick. i noticed that the second last boss was harder than this one as this only took me 5 tries while the other took at least 12, this is also shorter too and the, although i believe a riding crop would have made it easier

I find it very odd that there are people with 300 riding who don't have riding crops.

You saved up 5200g for a faster mount but you never spent 100g to make your non-epic more livable?

To me this is just another example of Blizzard being asleep at the wheel. There's absolutely no reason why this could not and should not stack with everything else just like riding crop does. Its pathetic, really, that it doesn't.

Even if, for whatever reason, they intended for the quest reward to be useless to the overwhelming majority of recipients, there should have been additional detail stating that it doesn't stack with anything. Its poor game design and poor attention to detail.

Its ridiculous that we have to come to a third party to figure out what the hell is going on.

So I tried this boss about 30 or more times and I didn't have a Riding Crop. I did have a mount set I always used since level 60 with +riding on gloves, mithril spurs boots, and my carrot trinket. I did this quest mostly for the trinket, but the rep is nice too. I didn't want to buy a riding crop because you all know they don't stack. My glove and boots were in the bank I didn't use them till the last few tries.

What didn't work:
Noggenfogger didn't really help on me, I bought 40 of these after reading someone said it helps to dodge the fires. Not to mention the pot has 2 min cool down now.

I tried the stay ahead method and didn't work for me either, this was when I only had carrot trinket on. I either get too far ahead or he caught up and I ran into the meteor.

What worked:
I decided to just follow him the usual way and dodge the meteors, but he gets too far ahead. Eventually I say f this, I went to bank and picked up the glove and boots. Came back and beat him the 3rd try. Use keyboard to strafe, use mouse to steer, always kept him in the center of my screen as I'm following right behind him. I was able to keep a consistent far distance without losing him. Very happy that I can finally beat him.

Without riding crop.
Only the first half is the difficult part.
1st part - From start till you come back to base.
Try to use the "Stay ahead" method

2nd part - From base to the top of the mountain.
Use the "follow from behind" method.

btw. think the carrot stick helps alot.

After 30 retries I got a bit frustrated. So I went to Tanaris, bought a few stacks of Noggelfogger, did the Carrot-on-a-Stick quest on my way there and went back to defeat Skyshatter. Succeeded on my first try :)

No Riding Crop needed but a bit of speed-boost is not bad either. And I have to say- Noggelfogger did make the whole thing a lot easier.

It's really sad that this thing sucks as bad as it does, but it really is a crappy reward when you get it. If it wasn't for the great rep from the quest it wouldn't be worth the bother. Ask anyone on your server thats as high or higher than level 69 and theres a great chance they already have a riding crop. The only people who don't have a riding crop are people who blow money as fast as they make it, or people who are just too cheap to pony up the 100g or less it takes to make it. This thing needs a buff, even if its only 1% to make it worth the effort. Right now its only redeeming quality is the icon looks great.

Craptian Skyshatter can officially kiss my arse, died sooo many times trying to beat him, the only usefull thing I found doing this quest is that the Engineering Parachute Cloak has a 30 second cooldown, for when he fried my arse...

The thought that someone would do this quest line to save 100 gold is dumb. The time I spent on this quest, could have been better spent farming gold if it were not for the killer rep gained. 1000 rep for winning the final race.

lol you guys need to stop complaining. im sure most of you knew that it wouldn't stack with the riding crop before you decided to do this quest, but the Skybreaker whip is not the reason why you did it. you did it for the rep and some nice gold.

Did this to get whip today on my alt, Skyshatter has been nerfed a fair bit, as it is about half the length and much easier than he used to be. Still a nice free riding crop, rep and gold :)

Tips:

1. Stay above and in front of him
2. Take all your armor off
3. Use noggin foggers to make you small ;)

I just wanted to say. LOL. I'm a druid with the epic flightform speed trinket, and I've just been too lazy to make a riding crop for my ground mount. Yay me. Plus, I can just get back in flight form even if those bombs hit me. :P Lol @ easy mode.

I don't have a riding crop and I destroyed that useless piece of junk carrot a long time ago for the bagspace. I'm doing these quests for the Netherwing rep - not for the reward. Plus it's kind of a fun change of pace from the usual grinding (plus I've already done all the dailies today). I have to admit, Mulverick was a pain in the ass, but I hear Skyshatter isn't as hard. Regardless, I have 4 more hours to work on it. Shouldn't take even close to that to finish, and it's 1000 rep for the last guy, and about 2500, collectively, for the others. Not a bad day when you add that to the 8 dailies I've done, plus about 4 eggs.

I have to agree, though - I think the Skybreaker Whip should have a slight advantage over the riding crop.

Mostly I'm just going to enjoy the novelty of having an official dragonmaw whip to spank my netherdragon with whenever I finally get exalted. Other than that, yes, it's kind of a silly reward. I'm a leatherworker and a druid, so it's doubly useless for me (guess it's time to sell the ol' riding crop). Still, the rep reward, the tons of gold and the satisfaction of beating one of the buggier quests still left in WoW is worth it.

Seriously, though, for a quest that so many have done already, you really think they would have fixed it by now... those dragonmaw races went from fun to repetitive to frustratingly impossible.

Easy summary for people playing Classic!

There are 4 tiers of speed enhancements. These tiers DO NOT STACK WITH EACH OTHER, so if you have a better tier, you cannot get any of the bonuses from any of the lower tiers.

Tier A: Paladin's Crusader Aura (+20% mounted speed), given at level 62 in TBC.
Tier B: Paladin's , Talent 3/3 (+15% mounted speed AND on-foot runspeed), requires 13 points in the Retribution talents. NOTE: Before TBC, in vanilla, it was only +8% speed and required 12 points.
Tier C1: Trinket Pattern: Riding Crop (+10%), created by leatherworkers. Despite what you may think, it DOESN'T stack with ANY other items/enchants (from the lower tiers).
Tier C2 ("Free" Alternative): Trinket Skybreaker Whip (+10%, Quest Reward), gained by learning Epic Flying at level 70, becoming Honored with the Netherwing, and defeating all of their races in the sky and defeating the final quest, Dragonmaw Race: Captain Skyshatter (something a lot of players give up on due to the difficulty of beating the racers).
Tier D: The "vanilla WoW solution": Carrot on a Stick (+3%, Quest Reward) and Formula: Enchant Gloves - Riding Skill (+2%) and Plans: Mithril Spurs (+4%) = Around 9%, but not exactly due to how multipliers stack, but it's less than 10%.
