Following the
announcement for Wrath of the Lich King Classic
, Wowhead had the opportunity to sit down with both Patrick Dawson, Production Director, and Tim Jones, Technical Designer, to have an open discussion regarding Wrath Classic.
Patrick Dawson, Production Director on World of Warcraft
No "Era Realms" for Burning Crusade Classic
Right Now
It was revealed that there would be no "Era Realms" for Burning Crusade Classic, and the Burning Crusade Classic client will just transition into Wrath of the Lich King, without any option for players to do character clone services. Patrick Dawson also mentioning, this also doesn't rule out the possibility of a Burning Crusade Season in the future, it just means it won't be happening anytime soon.
In regards to Classic Era, Tim Jones also clarified that Season of Mastery will not be the final Season of Classic. The Development team has experimented with ideas based on player feedback, such as no world buffs, updated raid encounters, and these are things the Classic team did deliver. Looking toward the future, the Classic team will be watching what players are asking for and looking to provide the best experience for Classic players.

Race Change and Faction Change Service Availability Uncertain
Patrick Dawson explained that Blizzard is looking at community feedback and the Development Team is having a conversation around adding in this service. As of right now, they do not have anything to announce on the availability.
Lifting PvP Realm Faction Restrictions also Uncertain
In the same conversation as Race Change and Faction Change, PvP Realms had the faction restrictions lifted in
Patch 3.2
, allowing players to create both Horde and Alliance on the same realm. As of right now, Blizzard doesn't have anything to announce about the faction restrictions being lifted for Wrath of the Lich King Classic.
Class Balance will be on Wrath of the Lich King Patch 3.3.5
Tim Jones explained that for Wrath of the Lich King Classic will be on Patch 3.3.5 for Class Balance, but not necessarily for systems and features. One example of this was covered in
a different interview on Josh Corbett's Twitch with Brian Birmingham
, Brian explains that the disenchant button added to the Need/Green pop-up will be removed, because this takes away from player interaction.

Arena Teams Replaced by Individual Rating in Wrath Classic
Tim Jones explains that the Individual Rating system is flat-out more player friendly and believes this change will be a net positive for the community. Players can participate in arena matches more freely, as they aren't tied to a specific team, as well as more experimentation in PvP Arena for team compositions.
Pre-Patch At Least Two Weeks Long for Wrath of the Lich King Classic
In the interview Tim Jones did say the Pre-Patch event would last "three weeks or so" and in the
Josh Corbett's Twitch Interview with Brian Birmingham
, Brian said "at least two weeks, no more than six" even mentioning that they might do "four weeks". This should give players plenty of time to prepare
Death Knights during the Pre-Patch event
before heading to Northrend.
Content Phases Schedule for Wrath of the Lich King Classic
In the same conversation regarding Pre-Patch, Tim Jones broke down how most of the launch experience and future content phases for Wrath of the Lich King is currently planned, before anything has officially been set in stone. This is of course just a rough estimation of how things will play out in Wrath of the Lich King. Listed below --
Pre-Patch Event (Two to Six Weeks long)
Release
Raids Unlock (About a week after release)
Naxxramas, Eye of Eternity, Obsidian Sanctum
Ulduar
Trial of the Grand Crusader, Argent Tournament
Icecrown Citadel
Dungeon Finder Tool from
Patch 3.3
Dungeon Finder Removed in Wrath of the Lich King Classic
While Automated Grouping was a feature added in the original Wrath of the Lich King with Patch 3.3, Blizzard has been following the community discussion around this topic and recognizes how it contrasts with the original Classic design philosophy. This led Blizzard to making the decision to remove the feature for Wrath Classic and has caused a
discussion to take place amongst the community again
.
During World of Warcraft Classic "Vanilla", players were vocally against anything remotely similar to Dungeon Finder and
Blizzard even shut down an addon that was emulating it
. In Burning Crusade Classic, the same issue came up and the community agreed that
a "Bulletin Board" style addon was sufficient for finding groups without automated or cross-realm features
. This Bulletin Board addon simplified the chat channel spam and allowed players to make groups, while still preserving the social aspects of the game.
Patrick Dawson explained that the Development Team has heard the player feedback on this topic and is looking into updating the systems and tools, ensuring that they are facilitating group creation without removing the social aspects that the Classic community wants.
Patrick and Tim also shared a great anecdote about a time when their Dungeon Finder group wiped and players in the group did not know where the portal to the Dungeon was,
because they had never discovered it in the open world
. One of the key negatives to the Dungeon Finder is the teleportation inside the Dungeon, which does take away a massive part of the open world.
