In
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight
, we will visit the long-lost Dragon Isles, where we will help the dragonflights grapple with their legacy, explore their ancient home, and help them face the challenges of old, recently awakened threats.
The Setting - The Dragon Isles
Unsurprisingly,
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight
finally sends us to the Dragon Isles, the ancient and mysterious home of Azeroth's dragons. A zone that was cut during the development of the original
World of Warcraft
, players have speculated about it making an appearance for many years - especially once it was revealed that
Wrathion has been searching for the location of the Dragon Isles
.
As their ancestral home, the Dragon Isles are described as the broodlands of the dragonflights, where they needed and built their civilizations. However, once the Sundering broke the world, elemental energy drained away from the land and left it dormant. Though they had to leave the Dragon Isles behind, the dragonflights left behind Titan Watchers to care for the land. If the magic ever returned to the land, the Watchers would need to send out the message that would summon the Dragonflights home, which is exactly what happens in the cinematic announcement trailer for Dragonflight.
The Story - Exploration and Legacy
Early dragons, or proto-dragons, were very different from the dragons we know today, but that changed with the creation of the Dragon Aspects, where the different dragonflights were given their power.
As the dragonflights return home, they will find the land has changed a great deal since they left. And, with the awakening of the land, old threats have awakened as well.
One of the threats specifically mentioned are the Djaradin, a race of elemental half-giants. However, we will also find friendly occupants of the Dragon Isles, such as tuskarr.
The new playable race, the dracthyr, are not mortal-impersonating dragons as we know them. Instead, they were an experiment by Neltharion to create the perfect soldiers by merging the essence of dragons with that of the more scrappy, adaptable mortal races that were emerging at the time.
Exploration is said to be a major theme of this expansion's story. Players will be needed to assist the dragonflights as they face the challenges of returning home. We will be exploring the Dragon Isles and helping the dragonflights find their legacy.
Characters who have been named as playing a major role in this expansion include Kalecgos of the Blue Dragonflight, Ebonhorn and Wrathion of the Black Dragonflight, and Merithra - Ysera's daughter - of the Green Dragonflight. As she
features on Dragonflight's key artwork
, it's also safe to assume Alexstrasza of the Red Dragonflight will play an important role as well.

The cinematic trailer is quite unclear as I read many people commenting and questioning it.
elemental energy drained away from the land and left it dormant.
For instance this cannot work with what is shown in the trailer
If it's the elemental energy which leaves the land and this forces the dragons out, then why the Watchers would shut their own energy source that seems secure and reliable? Then why would they have to hide these lands from the world if no power is left?
If it is the Watchers' awakening that is the cause of the Dragons Return in the region, instead of the contrary, that means the Aspects and Dragons who are scattered from Tanaris to Northrend are "summoned" by flight in exactly 3 seconds - from the fall of Koranos/Stony Tony to the point he's saved by Alexstrasza. I can admit there are teleportations and portals but this is not what is shown haha
As I analysed it for my channel - the return of the Dragon did cause the (elemental) awakening of the Dragon Lands and the awakening of the Watchers (that is Koranos alone).
Then the duty of the Watchers is to ignite the Beacon again, as the Lands are magically clouded outside the world. Until it is done, the Dragons are doomed to fly around over the sea, about the zone, without finding it. So as soon as the Beacon enlights the Isles, Alexstrasza can see what's happening and saves him in a wings flap.
About the reason of the Dragons leaving their lands, and more importantly hiding them away, it's hard to say, I can imagine it is because of the treason of Neltharion and the Black Dragonflight, and the mass death in the Blue Flight. They had the secure their powers' root lands as long as traitors were in their ranks.
