Whispers of the Old Gods
is Hearthstone’s latest expansion, going live today, April 26th. As the expansion is a playful interpretation of Old Gods lore from Warcraft, we thought it would be fun to highlight how the cards are related to WoW.
C'Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y'shaarj, and N'Zoth are new legendary cards and they are accompanied by WoW bosses from
Ahn’Qiraj
, members of the
Klaxxi
, and members of the Twilight Hammer like
Cho’gall
.

Ahn’Qiraj
.
Princesse Huhuran
was notable because she required every player to farm up a significant amount of Nature Resistance gear, which involved farming Green Dragons and crafting expensive items. However, wearing so much resistance gear reduced the amount of DPS players could put out, so defeating this boss was a challenge.

Ouro
, an optional boss in
Ahn’Qiraj
. Worm-themed drops included
Larve du Grand ver
,

and refer to the challenging AQ encounter in which both bosses needed to be tanked at each end of the room lest they heal, they teleported frequently and dropped aggro, and required a ranged DPS tank.
Yogg-Saron and Ulduar
Yogg-Saron is one of the most memorable boss encounters in Warcraft, featuring
Tête de Mimiron
as a reward from Yogg 0 and dramatic visions in Yogg’s brain of key lore moments for Wrath of the Lich King.
: Yogg was the most challenging Old God for the Titan-Forged to subdue; Ulduar became his prison. Over time, Yogg found a way to bestow the Curse of Flesh on the inhabitants of Azeroth and trap his Titan-forged guardians. Related card: . Learn more about
Yogg's lore and WoW references in our Black Empire article

is a reference to the achievement names for killing Yogg on his various hard modes, ranging from
Trois lumières dans la nuit (10 joueurs)
to
Dans la nuit noire (10 joueurs)
. Each light in WoW refers to the presence of a freed Titan keeper, who adds a powerful buff to the encounter.

Ahn’kahet : l’Ancien royaume

Sombre orateur R'khem

Un esprit fort
. He pretended to be a victim of the Lich King, mind-controlling the player into freeing him from the saronite prison.
: The Nerubian were a group of aqir that settled in Northrend, mutating into the Nerubians under the influence of Yogg-Saron. You can find them in
Azjol-Nérub
and
Ahn’kahet : l’Ancien royaume
.
Y’shaarj and Pandaria
Y’shaarj was the only Old God to be killed and his legacy lives on in Mists of Pandaria. He drives Garrosh to corruption in Siege of Orgrimmar and his heart destroys the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
: This card marks the first time we have actually seen Y’Shaarj. Previously we only had hints of this Old God in mural depictions in Klaxxi’Vess and Heart of Fear. Learn more about
Y'shaarj's lore and WoW references in our Black Empire article
.
: Similar to some abilities in Siege of Orgrimmar like
Toucher d’Y’Shaarj
and
Essence d’Y’Shaarj
.
was Garrosh Hellscream’s personal guard and a
boss in Siege of Orgrimmar
. He lived in Blackrock Mountain and previously served
Chef de guerre Rend Main-Noire
. In
Val de l’Éternel printemps
, Malkorok demanded the goblin excavation team hand over the Heart of Y’Shaarj, which later corrupted the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
Klaxxi
are a faction of Mantid that worshipped Y’shaarj. While you can earn reputation with them, in the quest
L'ombre de l'empire
, you learn that their loyalties lie with the Old Gods. You can get unique amber-dipped weapons like
Tranchoir d'ambre de Klaxxi'vess
and
Rênes de scorpion ambre
with reputation. At the end of Mists of Pandaria, you end up fighting your former friends in Siege of Orgrimmar. Two Old God cards pay tribute to the Klaxxi: and . The Klaxxi encased their heroes in amber, Paragons, to be awoken in a time of need.
Xaril l’Esprit empoisonné
is one of the Paragons who enjoys alchemy and potions and gives you the daily quest
Un ciel ténébreux
which is tied to
Par-dessus la tête
. He also
later appears as a boss in Siege of Orgrimmar
, using toxins as his main form of attack. In Hearthstone, the Xaril card can add random toxin cards to your hand.
has naming similarities to some loot drops from Siege of Orgrimmar:
Drapé du sang noir
and
Sang noir d'Y'Shaarj
.
N’Zoth and Cataclysm
N’Zoth is notable as we haven’t seen him face-to-face in Warcraft. He was first revealed in Hearthstone instead, and was later confirmed to be involved in the Emerald Nightmare, Highborne transformation, and corruption of Deathwing.
: N’Zoth’s card art is the first glimpse of this Old God. He’s trapped in an underwater prison and does not look too happy about that. Speculation during Cataclysm pointed to N’Zoth being imprisoned somewhere in the Abyssal Depths (
Débrancher L’ghorek
). Learn more about
N'Zoth's lore and WoW references in our Black Empire article
.
N’Zoth has a lighter side with and .
: There are trinkets for other Old God tentacles,
Tentacule de C'Thun vaincu
and
Étreintes de Yogg-Saron vaincu
. There’s also the generic .

and
Tuer le messager
.
The Faceless ones were first seen in Ulduar, making a reappearance in the Abyssal Depths, Throne of the Tides, Dragon Soul, Grim Batol, and Hour of Twilight: , , , .
Twilight Hammer
The Twilight Hammer is devoted to serving the Old Gods. Originating from Cho’gall’s nihilistic Orc Clan, the Twilight Hammer later aligned themselves with the Old Gods and grew even more powerful in Cataclysm with the return of Deathwing.
The Twilight Hammer can be seen in several areas:
In
Sombrivage
, players who complete the Master’s Glaive questline (
La bataille de Sombrivage
) defeat the Avatar of and learn about the Twilight Hammer’s plans to revive him.
In
Orneval
, players find the Hammer in
Profondeurs de Brassenoire
which houses a temple to the Old Gods and the loyal servant
Aku’mai le Dévoreur
. More information in
Cauchemar dans les profondeurs
.
Silithus
in early WoW had an elaborate system of reputation quests and summonable mini-bosses. You could dress up like a Twilight Cultist with
Ornements du Crépuscule
and collect
Texte du Crépuscule crypté

The Twilight Hammer, drawn to Yogg-Saron, also shows up in
Ahn’kahet : l’Ancien royaume
, led by
Jedoga Cherchelombre
.
The Twilight Hammer is all over Cataclysm leveling zones, with their headquarters in
Hautes-terres du Crépuscule
and
Grim Batol
. Other leveling zones include
Mont Hyjal
,
Vashj’ir
,
Le Tréfonds
, and
Uldum
.
The
Le bastion du Crépuscule
, one of the first Cataclysm raids, is described as: “The Bastion of Twilight stands as a dark symbol of the Old Gods' burgeoning power on Azeroth. Various branches of the Twilight's Hammer dwell deep beneath the towering form--considered the cult's foremost command center--along with their twisted leader, Cho'gall. There, he and his servants conspire to bring the Old Gods' apocalyptic visions to fruition by bleeding Azeroth of all sanity, hope, and life.
The ravings of some of the cult's more vocal members have been easy to dismiss as mere fancy in the past - but not once one has seen the Bastion of Twilight, the embodiment of the Hammer's fascination with new forms and transcending earthly bodies. The entrance to the bastion sits at the peak of the Twilight Citadel, atop a twisted elementium spire that points at the sky. Here, a portal waits to take the greatest Twilight aspirants...where? No one can say for certain.
What is clear is that the Leader of the Twilight's Hammer, Cho'gall, directs his forces from this dread place. And, whatever the location, it is certain to be near to the Old Gods who dwell beneath Azeroth, and give fruit to the darkest dreams of the living.”
The final boss of
Le bastion du Crépuscule
is who wields the , which is an actual drop -
Marteau du crépuscule
.
Ragnaros may have seen the Light in Hearthstone, but in
Chambellan Forteramure
in
Terres de Feu
has not. never truly recovered from the loss of his son from the War of the Shifting Sands. Mad with rage and corrupted by the Twilight Hammer, he became a servant of Ragnaros and founded the Druids of the Flame. The questing in the
Front du Magma
and encounters in Firelands cover the final chapter of his life.
The Twilight Hammer makes a final organized last stand in
L’Âme des dragons
led by
Maître de guerre Corne-Noire
and
Hagara la Lieuse des tempêtes
. resembles
Ultraxion
, and includes references to midnight (
Minuit va sonner
).
In Legion, they infiltrate Tyr’s tomb in Tirisfal Glades in the hopes of resurrecting Yogg-Saron’s general Zakajz using the
Shadow Priest Artifact Xal’atath
.
As expected, many members of the Twilight Hammer appear as cards: , , , , , , , , .
Corrupted Cards
Some Hearthstone cards are corrupted versions of their regular versions, like from . Here are the cards with a twist on their usual WoW lore:
: This gnome rolled /need on one too many things!
: The murlocs have found the light! They’ve teamed up with the Silver Hand to summon as your Hero Power.
:
Nat Pagle
had a bad day fishing. You can find Nat all around Azeroth as a
Garrison Follower
,
Anglers Quartermaster
, and
Extreme Angler
.
: Hogger is even more terrifying, as the flavor text suggests: “When C'thun went to sleep, he checked under his bed for Hogger.”
is a revamp of the
Sanglier brocheroc
from Elwynn Forest. Another familiar face from Elwynn, the Kobold, is now updated to . His rallying cry is “You no take tentacle!”
now has some rotten bananas. In WoW,
Roi Mukla
is a gigantic ape who throws barrels. Nearby on Jaguero Isle, you can find
Bébé singe
when it rains!
are apparently “normal wisps” and “‘Of the Old Gods’ bit is just marketing.” Wisps are spirits of nature that are friends to the Night Elves. Their bond was clearly seen when the wisps helped the Night Elves defeat
Archimonde
in Hyjal Summit.
“took to heart the feedback he was receiving that he needed to be ‘more of a team player.’ To this end, Deathwing puts all Dragons from your hand into the battlefield. In WoW, Deathwing used to be the noble dragon Neltharion until he was corrupted by N’Zoth and turned on the rest of the Dragonflights. Deathwing’s destruction can be found throughout Cataclysm and players can fight him in
L’Âme des dragons
.
has undergone the biggest change of heart. Ragnaros is a feared Elemental Lord, seen at both the end of Molten Core and Firelands. What do you get when you further corrupt an evil lord? A light-filled Paladin! He even says “Live, Insect!”
Class Abilities
Some Hearthstone cards aren’t elaborate references, they’re just interpretations of class abilities:
Hunter
: from
Ruée
.
Mage
: from
Fracasser
.
Paladin
: reminiscent of
Paladin Blessings
.
Priest
: similar to
, part of the

family of spells, part of the
Mot de pouvoir : Bouclier
family of spells.
Rogue
: from
Thé de chardon
, from
Frappe-ténèbres
.

Gangrebois
, as well as the battle pet
Ourson infesté
.
resembles the
M. Boustifs
battle pet from Eastern Plaguelands questing. “The grubs of the Plaguelands are a side effect of necromantic corruption and the massive number of corpses there. Mr. Grubbs is from a particularly acrobatic breed.”
