Test your mettle in our Dueling Tournament, toy with the threats of fate with shadow-laced fortune telling, where only the strongest may thrive. Hunt for forgotten relics in the Scavenger Hunt, though beware—some treasures may carry a curse. In addition to the main event, each year also hosts a Memorial March, which happened this Monday evening. For this year's event, characters retraced the path of Arthas Menethil on his journey through Northrend to claim Frostmourne. Shown below are scenes of the march formation, along with their honorary lanterns, performed by members of both the Alliance and the Horde.
The Dance's History
Though its modern iteration is a festival of roleplaying competitions and rituals, its past iterations as an event invoke a long-storied and much bloodier tale.
Originally founded
back in 2008
on the Steamwheedle Cartel server, Dance of the Dead migrated to the popular Moon Guard server in 2013, with many of the same festivities of the modern event. There was, however, one notable addition -- the Great Hunt.
During the Great Hunt, players from the Alliance with notable histories battling the Horde in previous RP-PvP events would be rounded up by Horde players as prisoners of war, and taken for questioning and punishment alike. At the end of their time as prisoners, they were moved into the Eastern Plaguelands, where they were subsequently granted their freedom... if they survived.
For the Horde, the releasing of the prisoners meant the start of the Hunt. After a set amount of time, riders of the Forsaken and their allies would march out from Stratholme, intent on finding and slaying any freed prisoners they found between the fallen city and the town of Darrowshire. For the Alliance, meanwhile, a contingent of saviors is also gathered, and ride out to meet the Horde in battle and defend their imprisoned allies.
For the prisoners, their participation in the hunt is a matter of life and death. Stripped of their armor and weapons during the hunt, the prisoners had no access to whispers, guild chat, or other global channels -- only /say and /yell. If their Alliance allies managed to find them and shepherd them to safety before the Horde hunters arrived, their lives would be spared. If not... the Forsaken would feast well. If a character was slain in their attempt to flee from the Forsaken, they would be considered dead and gone, their story as a roleplaying character concluded (with the player's permission, first and foremost).
By the end of the Great Hunt, a tally was made of how many prisoners were saved or slaughtered on each side, and the faction with the higher count was declared the winner. Horde players who successfully killed a prisoner of war were granted a blessing from the Cult of Forgotten Shadows at the subsequent celebrations, and the surviving Alliance members were allowed to lick their wounds and recover, at least until the next year's round-up began.
While RP-PvP is less frequent nowadays, events like these were once commonplace on RP servers, with Dance of the Dead as one of the most popular yearly contests. For those who want a suitably mid-2010's flashback, below is a trailer for the Great Hunt that happened at the event's debut on Moon Guard in 2013.
In years past, the event has also featured charity events in coordination with Blizzard actors such as Patty Mattson (Sylvanas), Michael McConnohie (Uther, Kel'thuzad, the Lich King), and Patrick Seitz (Garrosh, Arthas), who provided Q&A sessions as well as line reads. Below is the trailer from last year's Dance of the Dead, featuring the voice of Michael McConnohie as the Lich King and animation by Shenimations.
