I'm about to pick up my frost emblem cloak. Drape of the Violet Tower or Volde's Cloak of the Night Sky. (sorry I'm not savy at doing item links..)
Anyway, I seem to remember that Disc priests favored mp5, but then for a while everyone was saying to start picking up spirit....so spirit or mp5?
Here is my lady if you wanted to take a peek-
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dragonmaw&n=Limona
Lemme help you out.
Spirit cloak
MP5 Cloak
Now back to the discussion:
When it comes to Spirit, HOLY Priests will benefit
significantly
more
from Spirit than Disco will. These discussions must be kept separate.
Disco will benefit equally from MP5 versus Spirit for most equal iLvL gear, such as these two. Based on the
Meditation Talent
, you'll expect to see that 60 Spirit = 30 MP5, which is the same amount of regen out of either cloak.
These are otherwise equivalent cloaks, except for the color of the socket. Yellow means you can put in a
LUMINOUS
Ametrine and get your +5 bonus. Blue socket means to get your bonus, you'll likely have to use a
PURIFIED
Dreadstone (which is kinda yuck, even for a Holy Priest) to gain your benefit.
Here, I would say that yellow socket wins for Disco most def!
For Holy, the other cloak is better just for the spirit. Socket in a Runed Card Ruby.

In other words, regardless of your healing spec, I'm pretty sure the spirit cloak is the better choice of the two cloaks.
However, a bit off topic.. but if you're buying that cloak on a toon that sees a decent amount of raiding time, arent you better off buying your t10 gear first? This time around you *have* to buy all your tier gear with emblems of frost, and then later on upgrade that gear together with tokens dropped in ICC...
2pc and 4pc bonuses are pretty damn good, ya?

I was under the impression that 60 spirit would not give 30 mp5 in combat - the only way spirit would top the mp5 for disc is if you spent a small time out of combat to gain more from the spirt.
It's all relative. But here's what I see when I take off
50 Spirit + 58 Intellect
on my MP5
-47 Out of Casting Mana per 5 seconds
-24 WHILE Casting Mana per 5 seconds
This is in my disco set.

Yeah it's relative to your Intellect. The more you have, the more oomph spirit has compared to mp5. At earlier gear levels, mp5 was probably a bit better than spirit...

Yellow socket > Blue socket. Mana regen has never been an issue for me in disc, so definitely go for the Spirit cloak.

This is definitely true. However, if you're in T9 or higher content, Spirit vs MP5 usually yield a similar result per item level. In beginner's gear, you'll probably want MP5 > Spirit for disco.
In Holy, spirit always trumps MP5 given you have a normal amount of MP5.
IN ALL CASES, however, none of this matters anyway because INTELLECT is the best Regen stat. So don't forget to take all of this with a grain of salt to begin with.
edit: Yeah, yellow sockets rule.

It's all in *how* the mana is regenerated. If you look at it soley in terms of "if I sit here and dont heal how will I get the most mana" then mp5/spi + int is better than int+int+int.
But, when you look at it in terms of cooldowns, buffs, etc... Rapture, Replenishment, Shadowfiend, etc all regenerate mana based on your mana pool. The bigger the pool the more water that gets put into it.
At this point of the regen discussion does Intellect start to outshine the other stats.
In 25man raids with any decent amount of aoe damage, my Rapture talent has regenned more mana for me than Replenishment did.

If 108 spirit and intelect gives 24 mp5 then surely 60 spirit is going to lose out to 30 mp5? I don't get how the spirit cloak is better for a discipline healer. I know thats not great proof but it seems pretty clear cut.
Intellect only increases the effectiveness of your regeneration through Spirit, and 58 doesn't make any HUGE differences to your MP5. For this amount, it MAY affect you like 1-2 MP5 if you're being forgiving.
Intellect in itself does increase your regeneration more directly in other ways, such as through Replenishment, Shadowfiend, Hymn of Hope, Mana Tide Totem, etc.
I didn't have any pieces with equivalent amounts of MP5 vs Spirit to trade out to test. Maybe I do... I'll look and see.
edit: 318 vs 325 MP5 trading out
Invoker
vs
Heartmender
. Heartmender won.

I have seen this said many times.
I have also seen a theorycrafting analysis on EJ that concluded that when mana regen from all possible sources was considered at Tier 9 levels of gear, the amount of mp5 yielded per point of spirit versus per point of intellect was identical.
Thank You! I have seen "Intellect is king" and "don't gem spirit, even as Holy" too many times to count. I even made on post here on wowhead a few months back where I compared the mana regen from +10 Int and +10 Spi (Purified vs Luminous) based on my gear at the time. I even accounted for replenishment and came to the conclusion that Int and Spirit were very close. I didn't account for talents, raid buffs, and abilities due to the fact that they can vary from raid group to raid group and the effectiveness of SF and Hymn will vary from fight to fight.
For Discipline, I will agree, Intellect is the best regen stat. Holy however should have a good balance of
both
since the amount of regen you get from each relies on how much you have of the other.
To the OP, based on how much Int you have, you should get about 20 casting mp5 from the spirit cloak:
0.3*(5*0.005575*SQRT(1317+39)*(60*1.06) = 19.6 casting mp5
Also remember that spirit scales with raid buffs as well. It won't be as good as MP5 from a purely mana regen point of view (especially since MP5 was buffed 20% a few patches ago), but it isn't too bad.

60 spirit will give about 20-while-casting regen. mp5 is about 50% better than spirit for disc priests, as far as simple regen mechanics go.
And yeah, 23 sp, most likely.

Question:
So in the great wisdom of WoWhead, can we conclude that when compared to spirit:
Mp5 gear is meant for healers exclusively?
and that Holy priests are an exception to this rule?
It may be useful to know that resto Shamans have
this
Holy paladins have
this
while Resto Druids are most like Holy priests with
this
and
this
P.S. yes i know I am expanding the scope of this thread alot, but i like the approach being taken. The best results from people who have other healing alts.
