3.1 Patch Notes!
3.1 is

on the PTRs!
We have a very special
Patch Notes
page all prettied up with links, colors and tooltips, just for you! Check it out here:

This one has got some ESPECIALLY interesting changes. Not only do we have a brand new Gear Planner tool, we see the long-awaited implementation of the Dual Spec feature. There are also apparently some tweaks to the quest tracking system I'm interested to see—and mounts (or at least non-flying mounts) no longer vanish when they get wet!
Combine all of this with the class specific changes (Trap Launchers, anyone?) and I think we've got a hell of a patch coming up. Comments, questions, and thoughts are welcome!
PS: We are working round the clock to get all the new items and data up on the site for your perusal. Your new talent calculators should be ready shortly!

Ulduar Preview!
No matter whether you're Blizzard's number one fanboi, or you think they're the worst bunch of screwups you've ever paid $15 a month to—one thing can always be said for Blizzard: They know how to keep a secret. I fully intend to come up with a whole blog on this subject later.
So naturally, when Blizzard releases some info, all of us jump at the chance to go over it with a fine tooth comb. Let's get cracking, shall we? :D

Dual Spec Info Finally Released
So the long awaited announcement (and explanation) of the Dual Spec system has come. The official site has posted a Q&A session between Nethaera and Ghostcrawler, talking in detail about the mechanics of the upcoming system.
For the benefit of our readers, I've included a quick summary of the more exciting points here on our blog. Check them out after the break, and leave your comments on how they did it (or how they

Elekktion Day
I'd like you to meet my good friend World of Warcraft. We've been friends for about two years now, off and on.
I could talk about all the positive qualities that my friend WoW has, that he's always available to hang out when I'm free, that he's got a bunch of other friends, invites me to parties, all those things.
More than anything though, I've always thought WoW was awesome because WoW
wants me to succeed

Heroism
I submit to you the following question:
“Is your WoW character a violent person?”
Ostensibly, the answer would have to be yes, given that probably about 90% of what your character does involves fighting. And yet, I'm not exactly sure that needs to be the case. Is someone a “violent” character if they routinely use violence to accomplish goals that can
only
be accomplished through violent means?

Village of Warcraft: Small Scale Story Telling in WotLK
Yesterday,
Nabterayl
responded to one of
SBMrClean’s posts
about moral choices in WoW, and how they don't really exist. He says:
In other words, Blizzard is telling the story that Blizzard wants to tell (albeit with many loose ends and very, very slowly - how long did it take us to get anywhere with the new plague storyline? Almost six years?), and the players are really just along for the ride. WoW kind of has the perspective of the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds. That movie spends its entire time focusing on characters who, in any other movie, would be extras streaming past the camera.
Of course you can tell stories about people like that. But you have to stop and focus on them, and narratively speaking, WoW doesn't.
The original link is

.
In some ways I think I have to disagree with Nab's point. He's right about the structure. There is this two pronged duality in WoW that insists the PC is important and special while paying a lot of attention to the NPCs that, more than merely being outside the player's control, are basically un

Now That I'm 80...
Wrath of the Lich King has now officially been out for an entire month. For many players the mad rush to hit max level is done. For others there are still a few levels to go. In either case, there's one big question which plagues most minds when ascending the final plateau – What happens next?
What to do when reaching level eighty is at the core of our topic today. I'll start off with some examples of some interesting things one may have missed in their journey. Special items, factions, and dungeons – let's explore our options for max level in 3.0.

Part 3: Cooking
Before I become the

Once upon a time I had this fantasy of becoming the

A Game for the Obsessive Compulsive
So having been busy with the site since the expansion came out, I'm actually not NEARLY as high level as I should be. My paladin was level 73 at the time of this writing, which is pretty tame considering the rate at which people are tearing through the new content. But as time goes on, I've realized that I have a problem with WotLK.
I've heard complaints that it's too easy, or that the new gear isn't good enough to replace the old, or other things along those lines. But the difficulty that
I
have is with instancing.
The instances in WotLK are
great
. I mean, I don't know if there are any people out there who haven't done them yet, but they're just
great
. The environments are bigger and more interesting. The fights are more nuanced, and more fun. They feel more connected to the game world--you don't feel as much like you're stepping out of Azeroth and into instance-land. You can see the Howling Fjord from the balcony of Utgarde Keep. There are cinematic sequences embedded in the instances to draw you further in--not long ones, just enough to hype you up and keep you interested.
So what's the problem? The problem i

The Future of Storytelling
Someone recently brought the following to my attention:

It's a fascinating interview with
Flint Dille
, but for those not interested in reading the entire article, I was drawn to a particular moment when he says “Storytelling in MMO's is the future”. Considering the limitations of running an MMO in a static, unchanging, endlessly repeating world, I found this to be an interesting philosophy.

A Tale of Two Tribes
Greetings fellow travelers of Northrend! Today I invite you to join me in my adventure into
Sholazar Basin
and experience a war between two rival factions. The
Frenzyheart Tribe
, who were forced to travel to Sholazar Basin because of the Scourge invading their homelands, have taken up arms against the native Gorlocs. The Gorlocs who occupy the basin are known as
the Oracles
, and consider themselves the guardians of the mysterious titan artifacts that litter their home. Though they know almost nothing about these artifacts, they worship and protect them from any harm.
Upon reaching level 76, you might find yourself trudging through the marshes and jungles of Sholazar Basin, surrounded by the warm atmosphere and rich, lavishing landscapes. I'm sure you have come across our little friends roaming the basin, shouting at each other and calling each other names like "Big-tongues" and "Puppy-men", and you may have thought to yourself, "How can I get involved in this growing conflict between these adorable little creatures?" This, my friends, is your answer.

Friday is Casual Day
To an extent, I have always been a social person. When given the option, I prefer to be hanging out with friends as opposed to doing something alone. I discovered video games before I turned 10 years old during a social gathering where some friends of mine were playing Super Mario Brothers on the
NES
. I was instantly enamored by the concept of electronic gaming and that fascination has carried on into my adult years. The social aspect of gaming has remained important, even to this day. Sure, I play a video game by myself every once in a while, but I have way more fun when I am competing with or against friends, or even when we're simply watching one another play a game.
World of Warcraft is no exception.

WotLK Raiding - Lacking in Options?
When you place the raids available to us at the beginning of Wrath of the Lich King on a platter and compare them to Burning Crusade, it shows us that there aren't as many options--and perhaps even less creativity--when compared to its predecessors.
At the very beginning of Burning Crusade we had the following 10/25 man raids accessible to us:
Karazhan
,
Gruul's Lair
,
Magtheridon's Lair
,
Serpentshrine Cavern
,
The Eye
, and
Hyjal Summit
(excluding world bosses). In WotLK we have
Naxxramas
,
The Eye of Eternity
,
The Obsidian Sanctum
, and
Vault of Archavon
, which is based on the results of a
Wintergrasp
battle, and which may or may not be available to you every week.
While TBC only had two more compared to WotLK, don't forget that three out of the four WotLK raids are merely single encounter bosses. That means even less time to learn the instances, and more time waiting for the next one to arrive. Also, give

Return of the WoW Player
The launch of Wrath of the Lich King makes me think of waiting in line at 11:00 PM on November 23, 2004 to get into a EB Games store to pickup my pre-order. Here I was with a bunch of fellow gamers. I had just driven 30 minutes south to a nearby city, as my city of 10,000 without a video game store just won't cut it. There are about 50 people in line waiting excitedly. People are talking about what class they are going to play, did they play in the beta or not, are they going to play Horde or Alliance, what server are they going to be playing on. The comments and questions from one random gamer to the other were flying around furiously. Here we are, almost 4 years later, and I have been hearing the same story happening at nearly every game store on the continent.
When I first started playing I had about 20 real life friends who were also playing. Over time some have left, others joined. As of last week I didn't have any real life friends who still played the game regularly. Then all of a sudden -- Wrath launches. Counting on all of my fingers and all of my toes, I have over
30 friends
who are playing again. When
