Continuing with our spotlights on pop culture references in Battle for Azeroth, today we're looking at the Monty Python and the Holy Grail reference in Drustvar! Thanks to Syndro for emailing us about this, and to Varenne for the achievement guide!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
is a slapstick comedy film from 1975 parodying King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail. Monty Python became a cult classic, beloved by many people for its humor, and was rated the second best comedy movie of all time, according to the two-hour special
Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time
.
In-game, the achievement
In den Hexentrank gefallen
is a direct reference to a skit in Monty Python. To obtain this achievement, you need to search for
Mysteriöses Gebräu
s in the Crimson Forest area in Drustvar. Drinking one of those green beverages will grant you random 5-minute buffs, or 10-second debuffs. To obtain this achievement, you need to have all 4 beneficial buffs at the same time (
Hexengabe: Vortrefflichkeit
,
Hexengabe: Aufgepeppt
,
Hexengabe: Rage
and
Hexengabe: Seelenstärke
), as well as the debuff that turns you into a newt,
Hexenfluch: Molch
.
As there aren't many brews scattered around the Crimson Forest and the buffs can stack and don't last for very long, this achievement can be very challenging to obtain. For more information on how to obtain this achievement,
check this comment by Varenne
!
Hexenfluch: Molch
, as well as the achievement itself, is a reference to one of the most famous skits in Monty Python, where the knight Bedevere brings a witch forward to a bunch of villagers and ask them if they want to burn her. One of the villagers claims the witch turned him into a newt, but he got better. The specific part that the achievement references starts at 1:08.
BEDEVERE: What makes you think she is a witch?
VILLAGER #1: Well, she turned me into a newt.
BEDEVERE: A newt?
VILLAGER #1: I got better.
VILLAGER #2: Burn her anyway!
WoW has many other Monty Python and the Holy Grail references!
The
Dunkelmond-Kaninchen
is a direct reference to the
Rabbit of Caerbannog
, a not-so-harmless little bunny that guards the Legendary Black Beast of Arrrghhh.
Also in the Darkmoon Faire, one of the foods sold there,
Knusperfrosch
, is a direct reference to the
Crunchy Frog
skit. If we took the bones out, it wouldn't be crunchy, would it?
In
Wald von Elwynn
,
Terry Palin
is a lumberjack that sings,
I'm a lumberjack, and I'm OK. I sleep all night and I work all day.
. This is yet another reference, this time to
The Lumberjack song
! The song was originally performed by Michael Palin, while the NPC's first name can come from Terry Jones or Terry Gilliam, two other members of Monty Python.
In
Sturmheim
,
Derek Testerman
and
Harrison McCabe
discuss the possibility of using gryphons to carry cannons to Greywatch, a reference to the
Unladen Swallow
skit (reference starts at 1:20):
