WARNING: The War Within Story Spoilers in this post!
Chapter 1 - Breaking Point
Chapter 1 of the Isle of Dorn starts after the Dalaran scenario. We don't know what happens in the Dalaran scenario, but we arrive rather violently at the Isle of Dorn with a Dalaran crashed (and from the looks of it, competely destroyed).
After reconvening with Jaina and Thrall, our first mission is to help survivors and kill Nerubians, who seem to be the ones responsible for the attack that led to Dalaran's fall. We aid several familiar faces:
Ritssyn Flamescowl;
Aethas Sunreaver;
Meryl Felstorm.
Marin Noggenfogger;
Moira Thaurissan and her son, Dagran Thaurissan II;
Brann Bronzebeard;
Once we find most of the survivors, we locate Magni, who's fighting off against the nerubian leader, Queensguard Zirix. As we damage the massive nerubian, a cutscene plays out.
* Note: Cutscenes are currently not available to view on The War Within Alpha, but there are descriptions on what happens on each, which is what I will be using for this post.
Queensguard Zirix begins to call another swarm to the beach.Magni and his allies brace themselves for one final stand.Suddenly, Baelgrim and the stormriders appear and attack Zirix. Zirix and the nerubians burrow away, retreating.Baelgrim is astonished to see Magni, and begins to interrogate him about his presence here. There is a massive explosion in the distance towards Dornogal, their city.
As the cutscene ends, we're approached by a fleet of earthen stormriders led by Baelgrim the Stormward. We're asked to follow them to their capital, Dornogal. We find out there that the nerubians have also attacked Dornogal, and they are ancient enemies of the earthen. We're asked to ride a storm gryphon and use its abilities to defeat the nerubians infesting the city.
After helping clear the Coreway, the area connecting Dornogal to the underground, we are asked to stay out of the way of the Earthen while they assess what to do, and reconvene with our allies - Jaina, Thrall, Anduin and Alleria. They assess on the origin of the nerubians and how they might be related to Xal'atath, who is seemingly responsible for Dalaran's crash. After a brief dialogue, another cutscene plays, who implies we have lost more than just Dalaran...
Anduin: We brought the nerubians here...
Jaina: No. The nerubians were focused on the Coreway. The attack was another part of Xal'atath's schemes.
---Thrall, Jaina, Alleria and Anduin gather in Dornogal to discuss the loss of their joint strike force. They take a moment for Khadgar.Thrall and Jaina say they will return home and work to rally their naval fleets to Khaz Algar, asking Anduin and Alleria to stay behind for the survivors.Alleria sets her sights on hunting down Xal'atath.
This marks the end of Chapter 1.
Chapter 2 - Earthen Fissures
On Chapter 2, we reconvene with Baelgrim, who mentions the Coreway is impassible, access to the Ringing Deeps is severed, and because of his, he feels like he has failed his people. We're asked to help clear some of the debris surrounding the entrance to the Coreway and aid any earthen who might be caught in the destruction. During this, we recover a memory gem from one of the earthen.
After bringing the memory gem to the Earthen Council, we learn that the Earthen keep memory gems detailing their lives and once they pass, these gems are picked up and deposited on an archive that has been inaccessible for thousands of years. A Stay a While dialogue with Dagran and the Machine Speaker Brinthe detail more about memory gems - And how the future of the Earthen is threatened,
Dagran: Can I ask you another question, Speaker Brinthe?
Brinthe: Yes, small one. My current directive is to answer your questions.
Dagran: Fantastic! I'm much obliged. Hm. Where to start?
Dagran: How long has Dornogal been here?
Brinthe: Unknown. Our archive would contain that information, but as I said, it is non-functioning.
Dagran: I should be writin' this down. I'm standin' here with a livin' relic! ...no offense.
Dagran: Can you give me a rough estimate?
Brinthe: The Archive's last access date was approximately five thousand years ago.
Brinthe: But Dornogal itself has been here much longer, since before the Sundering that we believe damaged our machines.
Brinthe: Unfortunately, our memories from that time have been overwritten.
Dagran: Overwritten? Ye mean in the archive? Or... your memory personally?
Brinthe: An earthen's memories are erased upon recharging. Hence, the need to upload our memory gems to the Archive with each charge cycle.
Brinthe: I'm not offended. But we are unfortunately in decline. Without a way to recharge, we will eventually all enter stasis.
Dagran: When will tha' happen?
Brinthe: Sooner for some than others. In the next ten centuries, we will all cease to function.
Dagran: I'm... sorry to hear tha'.
Brinthe: Do not worry. We Machine Speakers are working hard to reinitiate the machines.
Dagran: I hope it works, Speaker. Truly.
We're told of this by Merrix, the Councilward. We're then tasked with a tour of Dornogal, which includes a visit to the flight path, the main inn, and the area where you purchase items from Delves. During this, we get another Stay a While dialogue, this time between Magni and Anduin. Magni talks about the earthen's rigidness and Anduin mentions being called Arathi by them - And how they are not supposed to know of the ancient Arathi empire.
Magni: These earthen. They're a funny lot. Odd traditions. Superstitions.
Anduin: What... do you mean?
Magni: Titans, Edicts... Thraegar...
Anduin: Some of them have been calling me Arathi. Like the ancient human empire. I... wonder how they know of it.
Magni: Aye. I heard that too.
Magni: I don't know what to make o' it. The earthen are also an ancient people. They might just be rememberin' ghosts.
Anduin: But it seems like the Arathi were here--recently. Why would the earthen have an inn with proper food and beds if they don't need them?
Magni: Do ye think the Arathi are here somewhere in Khaz Algar?
Anduin: I don't see how. But... it bears investigating.
We're then formally introduced to the Council of Dornogal, the ones responsible for order among the Earthen. We also learned that there are dissent amongst the Earthen, as two of their councilmen have separated from Dornogal.
Baelgrim: Attacks continue across the isle. We cannot respond to them all.
Merrix: Nor can we rebuild the Coreway without help. The Unbound--
Baelgrim: They broke their oaths. We do not need them.
---
Merrix: The titans uplifted four wards. The Councilward, the Stormward, the Stoneward, and the High Speaker...
Merrix: ... to keep the Edicts and build the Coreway and its fortress, Dornogal.
Merrix: But the titans left and the machines stopped. The Unbound abandoned the Edicts, and the High Speaker retreated to the Ringing Deeps.
Merrix: And now the Machine Speakers are cut off from us and we have no means to fix the Coreway.
Moira arrives and suggest an action not unlike one she had to take herself in the past - Take a diplomatic approach and attempt to reunite the Council of Dornogal, starting with the Stoneward (who is called Adelgonn), who has abandoned Dornogal with her band of earthen, called the Unbound. Merrix, the Councilward of Dornogal, asks Baelgrim to go with Moira to find the Stoneward. Baelgrim agrees to the task, begrudingly.
Moira: If this Adelgonn can fix their Coreway, we should seek her out.
Merrix: You are correct. Stormward, new directive: Take them to Freywold Village.
Baelgrim: I... will comply. Follow me.
---
Baelgrim: If Merrix wasn't Councilward... I would have never agreed to do this.
Baelgrim: You do not grasp the magnitude of her betrayal, outlander. I have no hope for our success.
Moira: Well, this should be interestin'.
As we arrive in Freywold Village, we see Adelgonn tending to someone, and signs of nerubian also attacking their village. As we talk to her, another cutscene plays.
Baelgrim leads Moira to Freywold. They are introduced to Adelgonn, the former Stoneward, whom Baelgrim hasn't seen in thousands of years. It is a tense meeting that Moira must defuse.
We're then sent to the Earthcrawl Mines, and this next quest works as an introduction to Delves - We explore a mine with Brann Bronzebeard and help free earthen who have been captured by the nerubians, as well as eventually finding the leader of the assault and killing them.
After we get out of the Delve, Adelgonn thanks us for ridding Freywold and the nearby mines of the nerubians and asks for further assistance, asking for flesh from the nearby fungarian, as well as Baelgrim asking for some ore to start an effort at rebuilding the Coreway. After this, we use the fungarian flesh to help heal the remaining Earthen, who are poisoned from the nerubians.
While this happens, Adelgonn and Baelgrim talk, and eventually reach an understanding on their functions as the earthen pools and the fungarian flesh is not enough to heal Ebona, an Earthen close to Adelgonn. After completing this quest, a new cutscene plays.
Adelgonn: Baelgrim. Your help is... appreciated.
Baelgrim: You were right. I have been... remiss in fulfilling my Edict.
Baelgrim: Now the Coreway lies in ruin. I need your help, Adelgonn. Just like you needed mine.
---
Adelgonn: She's fading. I...
Baelgrim: My stormrook can take her to Dornogal. Perhaps the healers there can help.
Adelgonn: Baelgrim... thank you.
---The sky overhead is overwhelmed by a huge swarm of Nerubians flying over, on the way to the city.
The nerubians are heading in the direction of the Proscenium, one of the cities in the Isle of Dorn that is currently being used as a field hospital. Proscenium is also famous for its cinderbees and for creating a concoction called cinderbrew, an alcoholic drink that gives a fiery kick that only the Earthen are able to tolerate.
We're asked to help repel the nerubian invasion and use cinderbrew (which, of course, also happens to be highly flammable) to set the tunnels created by the nerubians aflame.
Moira is now certain that the nerubians are in league with Xal'atath, and also believe they're hellbent on destroying the Earthen, even going as far as kicking them while they're down. We don't know why, though. We're asked to go back to Dornogal to try and piece this together. As we arrive in Dornogal, we see Adelgonn once again taking her seat as Stoneward and her Unbound Earthen preparing to help repair the Coreway.
This marks the end of Chapter 2.
Chapter 3 - The First Blow
Our first task in Chapter 3 is following Baelgrim's directive as the Stormward and organizing the Unbound Earthen to help begin the repairs to the Coreway, the underground passage that leads to the Ringing Deeps.
However, this isn't enough, as the workers can be a prime target the Nerubians if they're left unprotected. As such, we're asked to go to the Stormperch to rally Earthen Stormriders to bolster the defenses of Dornogal. At this point, we're supposed to complete a run of the Rookery, one of the dungeons of The War Within, which is currently not available for testing - So this quest is auto-completed.
After "completing" the Rookery scenario, we reconvene with Baelgrim and Alleria, who we haven't seen since the beginning of the Isle of Dorn storyline. Alleria mentions she has tracked the nerubian to a burrow near a meadery that produces cinderbrew. Looks like they want the cinderbrew, and they will have it - Aflame! Adelgonn suggests we give them exactly what they want, then set the cinderbrew aflame to kill them all. Wenbrandt, the dwarf responsible for cinderbrew production, is initially against this idea for obvious reasons, but agrees to participate once it is promised to him that his meadery will be repaired.
As we arrive at the Cinderbrew Meadery, we see the nerubians have not yet attacked the area, giving us time to set up a plan. To this end, we first evacuate the meadery and connect fuses to barrels of cinderbrew, to then set defenses around the building. However, as much as we set things to stop the advance of the nerubian once we disturb them, it is not enough to stop them from chewing the fuses we previously set up, not allowing for us to blow up the Meadery. As we fight the nerubian, a new cutscene plays - Together with another sacrifice.
The fuses have been sabotaged. The kegs cannot be lit. Baelgrim knows he must do this himself.Adelgonn attempts to stop him, but he does not listen.Baeilgrim rushes in on his stormrook and smashes the barrels. The cinderbrew ignotes from the massive blast of lightning. The entire meadyard explodes, killing both Queensguard Zirix and Baelgrim.
We return to Dornogal and deliver the news of Baelgrim's sacrifice to Councilward Merrix. As we gain access to the Ringing Deeps, the next zone in Khaz Algar, we see a cutscene of the Coreway being repaired.
Merrix: Tell me what has happeened.
Wenbrandt: Councilward, we...
Adelgonn: We have bad news.
Adelgonn: We have repelled the nerubians, but... Baelgrim is gone.
Merrix: I see. So he fulfilled his Edict.
Adelgonn: Not just that. He defended the Earthen. Both the Oathsworn and the Unbound.
Adelgonn: More than anything, he wanted us to stand together again.
Merrix: Then we will honor his memory by doing so.
Merrix: It will take time to fully repair the Coreway, but the outlanders will be able to descend to the Ringing Deeps.
Merrix: The Earthen of the Isle of Dorn will support their endeavor. No matter what the Edicts say.
Adelgonn: Thank you, Councilward. Now, let's clear the last of that rubble.
---Slow circling view of the Coreway being restored. There is a burst of light and triumphant music. When the light fades, the Coreway has been fixed.
With this, the Isle of Dorn questline is complete... and with it, we can go to the Ringing Deeps! But this will be another build...
