In an interview with
buffed
, Ion Hazzikostas mentioned something very interesting the future may have in store for the King of Stormwind, Anduin Wrynn.
Warning: Potential 9.2.5 Spoilers Ahead
Anduin's Story Continues in 9.2.5
In the interview, buffed asked if Anduin is likely to play a big role in Dragonflight. Ion replied that we will actually see him sooner than that, in 9.2.5.
Ion Hazzikostas
We actually have some answers to that question in Shadowlands. In 9.2.5 there's a little more to tell about the aftermath of everything we've seen. After what Anduin went through, surely this experience changed him forever and he can't just go back to who he was before. And that's something he has to deal with. Our current assumption is that Anduin will step down as King of Stormwind and leader of the Alliance. But he has his own journey ahead of him as well. And that's it, I don't want to give too much away.
We already knew Anduin has decided to take some time away from his duties from a conversation between Anduin and Greymane in the Aftermath of the main story of Patch 9.2. In this discussion, Anduin tells Greymane he's not ready to leave the Shadowlands quite yet, and that he trusts Turalyon to look over the Alliance in the meantime.
Anduin Wrynn says: I can't go back, Genn. Not yet.
Genn Greymane says: But the people need--
Anduin Wrynn says: Turalyon will keep the Alliance safe in my absence. And I know you'll watch over everyone we care about... Old Wolf.
Genn Greymane says: Of course. Take whatever time you need. And when you're ready... please, come home.
It is also
strongly hinted at the end of the Sylvanas novel
that Anduin meets up with Sylvanas in the Maw as she begins her task of rescuing the souls of every damned soul.
So the fact that Anduin is staying in the Shadowlands for now is already well established, but the interview suggests we will still learn more about his journey ahead in 9.2.5.
A separate interview with
For Azeroth
confirmed we are getting some Azeroth content in 9.2.5 as well as the pre-patch, which should highlight how both the Alliance and Horde have fared with their new leadership.
In Shadowlands Patch 9.2.5 we'll see some things happening back in Azeroth and learn of some events that have transpired. We’ll have pre-patch events where we find out what’s going on in Stormwind and Orgrimmar, how the Horde has been faring with their new counsel, how the Alliance has been faring with Turalyon at the helm, and what’s been different about that since then.
What does this mean? Will Anduin fully abdicate the throne in 9.2.5 and instead dedicate himself to helping Sylvanas rescue all the souls of the Maw? If he does, and Turalyon officially claims the throne of Stormwind as his own, that ties in even more with one of the infamous
whispers of Il'gynoth
.
The golden one claims a vacant throne. The crown of light will bring only darkness.
While the Old Gods are thought to be defeated, in a recent interview with the podcast
For Azeroth!
, Steve Danuser mentioned that Nozdormu still knows that his corruption and transformation into Murozond awaits him in his future. Since that corruption is at the hands - or tentacles - of the Old Gods, that suggests they're not quite as vanquished as we might believe.
We will have to wait and see. For now, any quests relating to Anduin have yet to show up on the PTR.
