I suppose the main question needed to determine the effectiveness of this talent is "what is the spell crit rate of an imp?" I myself have no clue what the answer to this question is. Anyone have any input?

It is almost certainly 5% - that is the "standard" crit rate for mobs. This talent is nice - it's basically another 5% SB crit rate + some damage for your little buddy. Combine with improved imp and demonic power and his DPS rises about 60-70% I think. For raiding having your imp out is generally mandatory, so this is a nice bone to toss to us.

Im really not too sue of this talent. At least for long fights anyway. Imp goes OOM in about 1m10s, and takes 2.5 seconds to regen enough mana to fire another firebolt off. That means after a minute, his cast times will be reduced to about 5 seconds.
My warlock has about 1200 spellpower, so not that great. he is an orc though, so 5% from passive pet talanets and 30% from improved imp. HE hits for 480-500, about 150 dps. The problem is the ammount of talent points you have to spend to get him that good;
3 - improved imp
2 - demonic power
3 empowered imp
Thats 8 talent points to make your imp do about 150 dps. Now lets talk about improved soul leech. My pet lasts 10 seconds more over 10 trys. meaning he lasts 1m20s. So that really doesnt seem to help either. I guess if you add that up, that comes to 10 points trying to improve your imp.
So now we ask why, and i guess its because of empowered imp. Gives you 20% crit when your pet crits. But your pet only has 5% crit. so you will get the effect once every 60 seconds.
worth 10 talent points? imho, not. im sure someone will crunch numbers and prove me wrong. i mean after all, where else do we spend these points?

This talent is misplaced. wowhead has it listed as demonology, but it's in destruction tree. and since i wasnt sure where i should report that, i'm saying it here ^_^

I can't believe no one has noticed this yet. This talent is AMAZING, when paired with Improved Scorch. Make sure you have a fire mage in your group-It will bring your imps crit rate up to 15%

Here's how this talent will scale in a raid enviroment.
Base = 5%
Boomkin = 5%
Scorch/Winter's chill = 10%
Totem of Wrath/Heart of Crusader/Master Poisoner = 3%
Total = 23% crit
So with a 23% crit rate and 2.0 casting time this will proc about once every 8.7 seconds.
(23/100) * 2 = 8.69
Every 8.69 you receive 20% crit to one spell. How much crit% this translates to is dependent on your casting rotation, haste, movement, and dot'ing. IE the fewer direct damage spells you cast the more effective it is since you will recieve the 20% buff to a larger percentage of your spells. However you also have to factor in double procs, which can lower it's effectiveness
(1 / Number of casts per 8.7 seconds) * 20% = effective crit%
1 cast = 20% crit
2 casts = 10% crit
3 casts = 6.66% crit
4 casts = 5% crit
5 casts = 4% crit
Given all the variables, double procs, moving, possible casting rotations, dot'ing and general randomness my guess is that it will typically come in at around 5% bonus.
Then of course you have the 15% bonus damage to the imp which, with the raid buffs, is enough to make this a must have talent for a warlock in a fully synergized raid. The only real variable is the boomkin since there will almost certainly be a frost/fire mage and ret pally/assassination rogue/elemental shammy in a 25 man raid. Compared to the alternatives (fire and brimstone...) this is a no brainer for raid dps.

A couple things need to be considered, here.
First off, Blizz has set it up (don't ask me why) so that you cannot have Demonic Empowerment and Empowered Imp. Talk about dangling the bait!
Second off, while this knowledge of "firebolt ever 5 sec thanks to mana regen" is useful and understood, getting Master Summoner, not to mention Fel Domination, is going to grant a rather viable alternative for people looking to keep their imp kickin'.

That seems the most viable to me. All it requires is a simplistic Immolate -> CoA -> Corruption rotation with Conflagrate spam in the middle and an imp out. If the imp goes OOM, summon another one...
I hope that makes sense. I leveled affliction and I raid affliction.

Interesting but useless fact:
Wowhead has this talent classified as a Demonology talent even though it is in the Destruction tree.
The reverse is true for
Molten Core
, which is classified as Destruction even though it is in the Demonology tree.

This talent is really going to see its shining moment in 3.2. Despite the destruction nerf of
Fire and Brimstone
(3/6/9/12/15% -> 2/4/6/8/10%), this talent is being buffed to 100% critical chance when your imp scores a critical hit.
That alone is powerful. But that isn't the only change improving destruction next patch.
All pets are going to start scaling with their owner's hit rating, which means more procs of this due to not missing. A missed spell cannot crit.

Is it me or this is way too imba with certain combos...? (for example any crit imp gains with Empowered Imp build goes to you as well (teoreticaly)) So with (2)T9 lock set you would get 10% crit with that build...

Not accurate. In a one roll system a missed spell wouldn't have been a crit if it hit.
A one roll system (which wow uses) works somewhat counter intuitively.
The amount that you crit will ALWAYS be what the tooltip states (+ buffs). If you somehow had a 70% crit chance and a 30% miss chance, you would
never
ever
see a regular hit. If then you got hit gear and lowered your miss chance to 15%,
you would still crit the exact same
70%, the only difference is that now you would see 15% of your attacks hit normally, 15% miss, and 70% crit.
The reason its like this is that it saves computer work. Instead of rolling to see if an attack hit, then rolling again to see if it crit, then (for melee) rolling again to see if it is blocked, then again for parry, etc... Lots of random numbers, and lots of wasted cycles.
Instead the computer determines everything with one roll. Which can get confusing.

Anyone know why this doesn't work with Curse of Doom? The tooltip says "of your next spell" doesn't single out anything...

Does the proc have an internal CD? Say, the effect can only occur every "x" seconds? Just wondering, because I'm just going to go for my 2-set T9 (since the 4-set blows) unless I can get the ilevel 258 stuff.

This is definitely an underrated talent and very worthwhile so long as you can spare the points.
Something worth mentioning, especially for PvPers - like similar next-ability-crit effects (third charge of Combustion comes to mind), you can crit with two abilities with the proper timing. Just fire off a "traveling" spell like Shadow Bolt or Incincerate, then follow-up with an instant spell like Conflagrate or a "non-traveling" spell like Searing Pain just as the first spell strikes the target for a nice double-whammy. Combos like Incinerate + Conflagrate and Chaos Bolt + Shadowfury tend to leave little in their wake.
