Blizzplanet
interviewed Tom Chilton and Ion Hazzikostas at gamescom--here's the highlights below. Check out our recaps of even more interviews in our
August 7th gamescom roundup
.
The Legion will be introduced to players in an Event that takes place before the expansion launches.
This will take after the flying/mercenary patch which wraps up Warlords content. There won’t be a Ruby Sanctum-esque patch, while the new boss was entertaining, it was exciting for about a week and was to dull for players done with ICC and too hard for players working through Icecrown.
The biggest problem with Warlords’ story is that while there’s a ton of story background, it wasn’t conveyed enough through in-game content. Garrison Campaigns weren’t enough.
Coolest lore aspect? You get to see the Emerald Dream corrupted into the Emerald Nightmare, and learn more about the roots of Druidism.
New character slot confirmed with the addition of Demon Hunters.
Fury Warriors and Frost Death Knights can currently dual wield or use a two-handed weapon.
With artifact weapons, and one artifact per spec, Frost Death Knights will simply be Dual-wield
while Unholy will use a two-handed rune blade.
Honor System allows cool PvP talents to be added that may have been cut previously when they had not much use in PvE.
Your artifact will have “relic slots” which will determine raw stats like DPS, spell power, strength.
These also give perks and modifiers to traits on weapon. Relics are from traditional sources like quests, dungeons, raid drops.
Draenor forces stay in Draenor, instead of helping us fight Burning Legion.
Demon Hunters are only Night Elves and Blood Elves
because those are the two predominant races in past Warcraft lore, and playing the class is about the fantasy.
Warlock Class in Legion - Affliction is master of dots, Destruction is bursty damage, Demonology is a “beast master” Warlock.
Social interaction improvements
- when you have a friend join a queue, it notifies others asking if they want to do so as well. Also improved group communication, if you raid, PvP, etc with certain friends.
Artifacts and old legendaries are technically two different things in the data—while you can transmog artifacts, you can’t transmog old legendaries.
Perhaps old legendaries will become transmoggable
, but limited-time things like the MoP cape, not old farmable things like Warglaives.
The Champion in your Class Hall enhances the experience for you, instead of going out and doing things for you.
Example - you assign them to patrol a zone, and then you get combat bonuses or rewards in that zone.
The Rogue Class area may be the Dalaran sewers.
Buffed.de
interviewed Tom Chilton and Ion Hazzikostas. They covered similar Demon Hunter and Artifact topics to Blizzplanet, with the following new info:
Four classes wear leather, and two classes wear mail. In gameplay terms, it's not a huge issue as in group content (Raid Finder, etc), people use personal loot. In a group loot case, it's used by a raid playing together and it's mostly about set pieces which aren't shared by all leather users, so only really bracers, belt, boots are left. From a fantasy standpoint, it feels right for leather too.
We previously knew that the Demon Hunter weapons were glaives, but
if you look at the slides of the character creation screen, you can see some of the actual Artifacts!
Priest weapons are much cooler than Benediction
, but they won't share details now.
Class Halls are very different from Garrisons. Garrisons are own personal base and you choose structure, the order hall is a shared space you inherit. Area for both Alliance and Horde, and there may be subsections for various factions. Much less lonely than Garrison. Fantasy in Draenor was raising army, and you felt like leader. Now, you have elite heroes by your side. They enhance your gameplay, not compete with you.
Old and new Dalaran coexist. Every old expansion lives in one point in time. Dalaran exists in Northrend for gameplay purposes, but there's a modified and different one in the Broken Isle.
Class changes emphasize fantasy and identity.
They don't want specs to blur together--Survival and Marks felt too similar in the past. Lone Wolf talent will change for Marks.
Artifact quests are not as elaborate as past class quests like Warlock Green Fire.
They were meant to be prestigious and near-impossible to get. Obtaining an Artifact weapon is an essential thing you need to do early on, it's meant to reinforce fantasy and develop class-specific storylines. They don't want a weeklong quest before you can get your Artifact.
Demon Hunters only have 2 specs, but other DPS classes have 3. Perhaps, if devs could go back in time, older classes would have fewer DPS specs. Rogues are a particular struggle to differentiate the three specs. They could make a ranged Demon Hunter spec and it would feel different--but it wouldn't feel like a Demon Hunter. They could also make it feel like a Demon Hunter, but only marginally different. So they decided not to split them up and just pour all cool ideas into one spec vs watering it down.
Demonology Warlocks summon demon, instead of transforming into demons. At one point, they would simply sacrifice their demons. Blizzard doesn't take revamps lightly because it can be jarring--don't expect Survival/Demonology level changes for all specs.
Priests are the only classes with two healing specs.
Discipline priests are focusing on being more of an offensive healer.
Another spin at Atonement mechanic--they'll still have heals and Power Word Shield, but they'll sustain healing through DPS. They'll be more 50% damage/heal kind of spec. Whereas Holy is all about healing.
Atonement should be a more interactive mechanic. In the past you'd spam Smite and Holy Fire, and healing was smart. In Legion, they imagine you throw out single-target heals, those players get a buff, and the next time you Smite, they get healing, and you keep having to refresh buffs and making active decisions as you go. This also solves absorb-heavy nature of Discipline Priests--right now it's not great, although better than Mists. Absorbs take away healing fun from other specs.
The interview touched on Mistweaver Monk issues with Fistweaving, and the developers acknowledged there were issues but more information would be given at a later time.
New customizations like tattoos will stay on Demon Hunters for now
, not other classes in the barbershop.

Patch Plans for expansion are still unknown. They've done smaller patches before, but 6.1 was not named correctly, it didn't have enough content.
Legion will offer a large content spectrum, you want to focus on an improved end-game experience. Could have been done better in Warlords and actively working on in Legion so all players are engaged once at max level. Large buffet of things to do on daily basis.
Is WoW too casual (eg LFR)? We wanted people to get into the fun faster with LFR. People forget challenges of finding group in past expansions.
Improving social connections-WoW is best played with friends.
New guild features? Can't concretely say anything now, although we agree we can do better.
Mists of Pandaria was conscious tone change--instead of being placed in a negative setting, it was about adventure and exploration, a new way of thinking about the game.
Too early to guess what Illidan's role is in the expansion.
New Transmog and Social Features
There are several interesting features advertised on Blizzard's Legion website, which we haven't heard much about yet: a new transmog system and improved social features. Perhaps we'll hear more about these during Sunday's Legion Panel?
Transmogrification: We’re improving the transmogrification system, allowing you to collect item appearances and save your favorite outfits without sacrificing precious bag space. A Diablo-esque transmog system has been teased at past BlizzCons, and in Wowhead's Patch 6.2 interview, it was stated that it wasn't on the backburner, but actively being worked on.
Social Features: Create social circles with friends that have shared interests, and form the perfect group to play your way. As Azeroth trembles, finding new allies will be more important than ever.
