Hearthstone’s latest expansion – Rise of Shadows – just got released! Wowhead's sister site Hearthstone
Top Decks has lots of useful information about the new expansion and wrote this article to help you out!

The new, spooky set marks the return of familiar foes as the new Standard year – the Year of the Dragon – begins in earnest. It means that all of the expansions released in 2017 (including Knights of the Frozen Throne with Hearthstone’s reimagining of The Lich King and his iconic locale, bringing along the infamous corrupted Death Knight versions of the heroes like Deathstalker Rexxar and Uther of the Ebon Blade) will only be playable in the “eternal” Wild format.

If you haven’t given Hearthstone a try just yet but you were thinking about getting into the game – or perhaps used to spend time in Azeroth’s taverns, a new Standard year is always the best time to dip in and give the new experience a try. Since lots of cards have rotated out, it’s easier to get a decent card collection, and if you start buying packs from the latest set, you can be sure that they will be available in this format for the next two years. You’ll also get a bunch of unique quests celebrating the start of the Year of the Dragon that award you packs from the Rise of Shadows set!

Not sure what to try during the launch? You aren’t up to date with the new in-game mechanics? Here’s
our expansion guide that should answer most of your questions!

Setting

Rise of Shadows revolves around a dastardly plot organized by a motley crew of Hearthstone-exclusive characters led by Arch-Thief
Rafaam, the self-styled supreme archeologist. While their ultimate plan is still shrouded in mystery – and we’ll likely learn more about it in the single-player content slated for a May release –, what’s clear is that he and his gang are trying to sack Dalaran to plunder the untold riches inside the floating city. This year, Hearthstone’s three expansions all tell one story – presumably, this one marks the initial excursion of The League of E.V.I.L. while the fightback and the eventual showdown will have to wait until the second and the third sets of the year.

That said, the iconic capital isn’t exactly undefended – Hearthstone’s nine classes are divided into two groups as Druid, Paladin, Mage and Hunter are lined up as the Defenders of Dalaran, featuring heavyweight lore figures like <a href="

, Khadgar
, Vereesa
Windrunner and Archmage
Vargoth (as a neutral card made available for free for every player).

The new keywords introduced in Rise of Shadows are Schemes – one-off special cards made available for the villains that increase in strength over time – and Twinspells, spells which add an extra copy of themselves to your hand after you’ve played them.

New Cards

While Hearthstone no longer strictly follows the World of Warcraft lore – leaning fairly heavily on its original characters for the villains of this story –, it still takes quite a lot of inspiration from it, especially in the Legendary cards department. Apart from the previously mentioned figures, you will also be able to use Nozari
, Fel
Lord Betrug, <a href="

, Archivist
Elysiana and many others in your decks.

It’s still difficult to say which cards will work out and which ones will be as good as the Arcane Dust they’re made of, but a lot of them look very promising!

Potential Decks

The first few days of the expansion are always very chaotic – especially at the beginning of a Hearthstone rotation. Unlike last year, almost none of the current popular decks will survive the loss of its cards, increasing the chaos even further! We’ve put together a post discussing in this detail, which you can find <a href="

. Theorycrafting and reviewing cards are one thing, but expansion launches have taught us that predicting a meta we haven’t experienced yet is almost impossible. As such, the decklists that seem like world-beaters after two days rarely make it past the one-week mark – no wonder many consider this to be the most exciting time to play the game! While it’s difficult to say what’s going to be good early on, we’ve created a bunch of theorycraft deck guides for you to start out.

Our writers have been working on some great <a href="

Single-player content

We still don’t know too much about the upcoming single-player portion of Rise of Shadows: it is slated for a May release and it’s likely going to shed more light on The League of E.V.I.L.’s dastardly plans. Its design marks a return to the old adventure-type content we’ve seen in the early years of Hearthstone and it’s meant to be a deeper experience with more replayability than Dungeon Run and its iterations were over the course of the last four expansions.

Since the corresponding files haven’t been added to the game yet, we can’t yet provide information about the bosses and their Hero Powers. Rest assured though: once we know more about this adventure, we’ll be sure to share the details with you about it all!

Rise of Shadows – a Brave New World?

Every Hearthstone rotation shakes up the game in new ways but there’s a reason why this particular one is extra exciting: it marks the first set created in its entirety after the departure of Ben Brode, the game director and ex-lead designer with the legendary laughter that many associated with the title. A change in direction was also made evident by the new features announced during the run-up to the Year of the Dragon.

These include little things like a more expansive Fireside Gathering experience and the option to use a random cardback, while we’ve also received a quite robust in-game deckbuilder which uses in-house winrate data to craft the best possible deck using the cards you’ve specified! Also, the problematic Genn Greymane and Baku the Mooneater were prematurely rotated to the eternal format in order to enable more of the new archetypes going forward. Hearthstone’s limited format will also undergo massive changes in the Year of the Dragon thanks to a rotation that will feature a combination of old and new sets that gets changed every two months, guaranteeing a fresh gameplay experience.
