In Dragonflight's Alpha Build 44649, a very special Hearthstone character has made his way into World of Warcraft: Rafaam! He has been one of the most popular antagonists in Hearthstone history for years now, starring as the main villain in multiple expansions. Could he be involved with a potential return of Galakrond in Dragonflight?
Who Is Rafaam?
Arch-Thief! Arch-Villain! Supreme Archaeologist! Imp King! Rafaam holds countless titles amongst friends and foes. Back in 2015, Team 5 introduced their brand-new villain with the release of The League of Explorers, Hearthstone's third adventure at the time. In a compelling storyline, Brann Bronzebeard and his colleagues Reno Jackson, Elise Starseeker, and Sir Finley Mrrgglton set out to find the Staff of Origination, a rare Titan artifact. Little did they know, however, that the self-proclaimed Supreme Archaeologist has been on the hunt for the powerful staff as well!
Eventually, Rafaam fails to use the powerful artifact to his advantage, and the League of Explorers saves the day - but that was only the start of Rafaam's illustrious super-villain character arc.
Over three years later, Rafaam made a return in Hearthstone's Year of the Dragon. In 2019's first expansion Rise of Shadows, Rafaam brought together the League of E.V.I.L. to fulfill his year-long master plan:
The resurrection of Galakrond
. He stole the whole city of Dalaran and turned it into a gigantic rocketship to travel to Uldum where he unearthed the Plague of Undeath only to bring it to Dragonblight, the resting place of Galakrond, the Father of Dragons and one of the most dangerous beings that Azeroth has ever seen.

Rafaam eventually succeeded - but Galakrond had no plans to follow the Supreme Archaeologist's lead. Instead, the powerful proto-dragon wanted to see Azeroth burn as he did in his lifetime. In the end, it is Rafaam himself who ends Galakrond's short comeback by using a plethora of stolen artifacts such as the
Staff of Ammunae
,
Quel'Delar
of the
Book of the Dead
.
Could Rafaam Resurrect Galakrond in World of Warcraft?
Back in April,
we speculated about the possible main antagonists of Dragonflight
, and Galakrond has been an obvious entry in the list. Right before he was about to devour every single dragon on Azeroth, Galakrond was killed by the five dragons who eventually became the Aspects.

Now back to Hearthstone: We do know that Rafaam is almost certainly a time-traveler, so he could make things work to his advantage when it comes to meddling with the timelines involving Galakrond. Back in the League of Explorers expansion, one of his collectible artifact cards was the Timepiece of Horror - a machination that could be used to travel through time. In addition to that, the storyline of basically every single League of E.V.I.L. character implies that they would want to time-travel to set their record straight.
Right before the release of Rise of Shadows in 2019,
I speculated that Rafaam was after the Eye of Dalaran
, an artifact hidden somewhere in the floating city, and that he was about to exploit its powers for time-travel. Little did we know that the ethereal was about to steal the whole city and resurrect the father of dragons! But who knows how many Kirin Tor artifacts he took with him during this disastrous adventure ...
That brings us back to WoW. We don't know the exact details regarding Hearthstone's timeline compared to World of Warcraft. Similar to the
first appearance of the League of Explorers on Mechagon Island back during Patch 8.2
, we cannot say for sure if Blizzard doesn't just plan to include a Hearthstone character like Rafaam as an easter egg, fully disregarding timelines and lore. Rafaam's appearance in the Dragonflight Alpha, however, raises eyebrows at least: A character with such rich lore could definitely play a more important role in WoW's upcoming expansion- especially if he has resurrected the most dangerous dragon of all time in an alternate timeline!
Combine that with the meddlings of the Infinite Dragonflight, the update of the "Galakrond's Fall" map, and the intriguing story of Raszageth, the end boss of Dragonflight's first raid, and you have yourself a wild mix of compelling theories about the potential future of Dragonflight's upcoming storyline!
