PTR Status (and Argent Tournament!)
Dresorull over on the official forums has given us some breaking news about the current status of the PTR.
Check out the info
here
.
EDIT:
Okay apparently I'm not as funny as I think I am, so I'm co-opting this post to turn it into an announcement of some information that's
actually
interesting. Apparently the next patch, on top of the addition of our oh-so-heavily-anticipated raid content, is
also
featuring a brand

Official Blizzard Update: BlizzCon, Ulduar, and more
Once again, our friends at Blizzard have sent us a little note asking us to mention a few of their big announcements this week...and boy, there have been some big ones.
We have three different big announcements this week:
BlizzCon 2009 has been announced, and tickets will be available soon!
The 2009 World of Warcraft Arena Tournament is now open for registration!
The Ulduar sneak peek we linked
yesterday
is now up on the US site!
Check after the break for the official Blizzard announcements. :)

Ulduar Preview!
No matter whether you're Blizzard's number one fanboi, or you think they're the worst bunch of screwups you've ever paid $15 a month to—one thing can always be said for Blizzard: They know how to keep a secret. I fully intend to come up with a whole blog on this subject later.
So naturally, when Blizzard releases some info, all of us jump at the chance to go over it with a fine tooth comb. Let's get cracking, shall we? :D

Jeff Kaplan Now Working On Mystery MMO
So it looks like Game Director Jeff "Tigole" Kaplan has switched projects—he's now working on Blizzard's unannounced, upcoming "next-gen MMO". Check out the announcement:
I wanted to take a moment to let the community know that I’ve switched roles here at Blizzard to work on our upcoming, unannounced MMO. World of Warcraft has been such a central part of my life these past six and a half years, and it’s success would not have been possible without the tremendous community around it, so I wanted to say thank you to all our players who’ve shared this amazing experience with us so far. Also, while I have served as the spokesperson and Game Director for World of Warcraft on Wrath of the Lich King, by no means would WoW be where it is today without the dedicated team that we have in place. The WoW development team is comprised of some of the most talented and experienced game developers in the world, and it was an absolute honor to serve amongst them, and they will continue to make WoW better than ever. I still plan to be very involved with the future course of World of Warcraft, but will leave the day

Dual Spec Info Finally Released
So the long awaited announcement (and explanation) of the Dual Spec system has come. The official site has posted a Q&A session between Nethaera and Ghostcrawler, talking in detail about the mechanics of the upcoming system.
For the benefit of our readers, I've included a quick summary of the more exciting points here on our blog. Check them out after the break, and leave your comments on how they did it (or how they
should
have done it)!

Patch 3.0.9 Released! (Also Official Venting Location)
Edit: Maintenance extended another two hours, until 1pm PST. Who's surprised? :)
Server down? Having trouble patching? Hate the changes they made to your class? Have a rash on your feet that just won't go away, and you're waiting for Blizzard to send you some ointment? Well, here's the place to tell us about it. And if the servers just come back up without issue, then...well then we'll just let this thread die. :)
Especially interesting about this patch is the official patch notes, which can be found here:

More info on this after the break!

Patch 3.0.9...?
So
MMO-Champion
has announced that the 3.0.9 patch is coming out tomorrow, and posted a set of patch notes. There has been some confusion on the official forums, since the official patch notes on the site still read 3.0.8, and Boubouille doesn't cite a source on MMO-Champion—but since it's a hot topic, I thought I'd post the patch notes here.
Please note these may not be official patch notes. Without an official Blizzard source, we can't verify their authenticity. We offer them here for discussion purposes only.
The full notes are listed after the break.

WoW not for sale in Australia? (Official Response)
So a lot of attention has been paid lately to the recent news that WoW was supposedly no longer legally for sale in Australia. Apparently the issue is that being an online game, WoW is not rated by the Australian ratings board—and new legislation has just been passed to prevent the sale of unrated games. WoWInsider had a story posted about it
here
.
Well, the day of the law change has passed and WoW is still on the shelves.
WoWinsider
(and their sister site,
Massively
) claim it's because no one really cares enough about the issue to pull them, but a recent email from Blizzard seems to indicate otherwise. At Nethaera's request, I have republished the email here after the break.

Upcoming Class Changes!
Edit:
All the classes have their info up! As changes are made, we'll keep this post up to date.
So Blizzard has announced some upcoming class changes which sound especially exciting! I've included the entire text of the changes in this post, all prettied up with links for you—just click the "Continue Reading" link to see. More will be added as the info is released, of course—so keep checking back!
Please keep in mind that this list is not at all comprehensive, and subject to change. :)

Gearing Up IRL
All of us already know that WoW, and by extension Warcraft, is an exceedingly successful franchise. After all, we likely wouldn't be here if it wasn't. So with that in mind, I find myself wondering today about the numerous other sub-franchises that have sprung up around it.

Official Blizzard Update: Patch 3.0.8a today
Blizzard is cleaning house and clearing out the last few problems with 3.0.8 today, with a tiny patch designed to sweep up the last of the issues mentioned in the previous

Arenas Disabled—Official Blizzard Update (2:30 PM PST)
Bad news for PvPers:
Blizzard has disabled all Arena matches
pending further investigation of calculation issues. The official link has been added to the list below.
This latest patch is a doozy, and if you're anything like me your realm is swarming with problems. Feel free to post any issues you may be having with the latest patch here, so we have a consolidated list.
Blizzard's official announcements on the subject:
New:
Arenas Disabled
Battle For Wintergrasp Disabled
3.0.8 Major Known Issues
Death Knight Creation
Good luck, and cross your fingers that they get the kinks worked out soon. I'm going to try and keep this post updated as we find out more.

Village of Warcraft: Small Scale Story Telling in WotLK
Yesterday,
Nabterayl
responded to one of
SBMrClean’s posts
about moral choices in WoW, and how they don't really exist. He says:
In other words, Blizzard is telling the story that Blizzard wants to tell (albeit with many loose ends and very, very slowly - how long did it take us to get anywhere with the new plague storyline? Almost six years?), and the players are really just along for the ride. WoW kind of has the perspective of the Tom Cruise War of the Worlds. That movie spends its entire time focusing on characters who, in any other movie, would be extras streaming past the camera.
Of course you can tell stories about people like that. But you have to stop and focus on them, and narratively speaking, WoW doesn't.
The original link is
here
.
In some ways I think I have to disagree with Nab's point. He's right about the structure. There is this two pronged duality in WoW that insists the PC is important and special while paying a lot of attention to the NPCs that, more than merely being outside the player's control, are basically un

Naxxramas and World Latency Fixes – A Message from Blizzard
Blizzard has kindly asked us to make sure everyone is aware of the announcement they just made on the official forums:
Naxxramas and World Latency Fixes
For the last several weeks, our players have been experiencing periodic latency in both outdoor Northrend areas and Naxxramas, and we wanted to provide you with several updates on what we're doing to resolve these issues. As many players have discovered, the outdoor Northrend latency has been tied to activity in Wintergrasp. We are actively working on a server-side fix that should address the high latency experienced in the outdoor world when Wintergrasp is active. This fix is currently in testing on internal test realms and we anticipate that we'll be able to push it to live realms in the near future. Concerning Naxxramas, optimizations are being made that will address both the latency and disconnection issues affecting players while in that zone. These optimizations will be included with the next minor content patch.
We appreciate your patience as we work to address these issues.

Nameplates & Suggestions to Blizzard
In my entry today I'm going to discuss two little issues which I feel aren't being paid enough attention. Nameplates and the default threat system. You may be asking yourself, "What in Azeroth's three continents does threat and etched dinnerware have to do with each other?" The answer, of course, is you are silly. No, but seriously, these are two little topics which I'm going to present separately, then show you my suggestion to Blizzard to help truly maximize some of the already included features in the game.
Stick around for some exciting highs, disagreeable lows, and a lollercoaster ride you'll never forget. Okay, maybe not. Stick around anyway!

Holiday Security Issues & Advice
This is a notice to let everyone know there has indeed been a surge in account security resulting in hijacked accounts, stolen items, and even loss of characters. It is very important we stress the fact that everyone needs to have their operating system, Internet browser, virus scanners, and/or any malware scanners updated to the most current versions. Please take the necessary steps to ensure no one can gain access to your computer or account without permission.
According to Blizzard, majority of accounts are compromised by one of the methods listed here, after the break:

Happy Thanksgiving!
So it's that time of year again here in the US--time for us to gain another 10 pounds, and to start thinking about what we're thankful for.
I started thinking about this recently and it occurred to me that in a very real way, one of the things I'm thankful for is WoW. I hate to sound like a sap, of course, and I know that there are some people out there who have met friends, significant others, even spouses via WoW--or people who have real social lives thanks to WoW friends, etc. I read those stories and I can't help but smile. But that's not
my
story. My story is a little different.

Another Warcraft RTS?
Wowhead user
DeathandDecay
recently put up a
post
in the Randomness forum which asked if Blizzard was planning on a fourth real time strategy (RTS) in the Warcraft series. I quickly drafted a reply after reading through the others, then realized this would make great blogging material! The question I sought to answer was: how exactly is Blizzard going to create another RTS game, and still fit it into the Warcraft universe and timeline?
After some thought, I was able to come up with five possibilities.
