The Naxxramas raid speed clear world record in Blizzard's World of Warcraft Classic has just been broken. The guild Progress has put up a clear time of only 45 minutes and 18 seconds!

Progress has been keeping their speed run attempts in Naxxramas secret for a few weeks now. Today they finally released a Warcraft Logs report for their astonishing 45 minute and 18 second clear of the hardest raid in all of Classic World of Warcraft! This new time annihilates the previous best which was 47 minutes and 57 seconds by <none of the above>, also from Firemaw-EU.
Progress Naxxramas Speedrun Warcraft Logs
Progress practiced their runs many times on the public test realms to get their execution just right - something many of the top speed running guilds do. Their raid is stacked with 22 warriors who are considered the best damage dealers in classic at the highest level of play, and only 10 healers.
They had a major trick that the other top speed runs did not - they managed to bring the
Polarity Shift
damage buff from
Thaddius
all the way to
Sapphiron
and kill
Sapphiron
(who has over 3 million health) in only
24 seconds
.
Polarity Shift
provides players with a damage boost of up to 190% intended to take down the very high HP boss
Thaddius
- it was not meant for absolutely crushing
Sapphiron
! Progress intentionally waited to kill
Thaddius
until
right after
a fresh cast of
Polarity Shift
so they had as much time on the 1 minute debuff as possible.
On
Sapphiron
they had to have players stack together with the main tank so that the tank could keep up on threat due to the massive damage output.
Sapphiron
's Cleave would certainly kill them all, and those tight clumps of players both front and back would also get badly hurt by Blizzard. Progress managed to keep everyone alive and pumping out damage by using the one time only quest reward
Light of Elune
on 25 of their players. Tetsu says that
Light of Elune
is not required for this strategy and that
Limited Invulnerability Potion
would suffice - but
Light of Elune
certainly makes it easier!
The total raid DPS for this
Sapphiron
kill was an astonishing 132,172 and they had twelve players each with over 5,000 personal DPS. Their highest DPS, a warrior by the name of Redacted, did a mind boggling 7,167 DPS during the
Sapphiron
kill.
Sapphiron
kill times in the other top speed runs of Naxxramas range from 1 minute 50 seconds to 2 minutes, so Progress's clever use of
Polarity Shift
gained them around 85 to 95 seconds over the competition. That doesn't make up the total time difference, but it is a large chunk compared to the second place run. Most of the remaining time save likely comes from more efficient movement and chain pulling throughout the instance - Progress had only 12 separate combat engagements that involved only trash, they killed some of the trash during bosses.
After
Sapphiron
dies, the entire raid uses
Flask of Petrification
to remove the
Polarity Shift
debuff from all the players so they can quickly move together to
Kel'Thuzad
without damaging each other.
Flask of Petrification
has been a point of contention in Classic speed running, with guilds really abusing it throughout Temple of Ahn'Qiraj and it finally being limited by Warcraft Logs in Naxxramas. However, the limitation only applies to
in combat
uses of
Flask of Petrification
, and Progress's use
after
Sapphiron
does not count towards the limit.
Full Video of the entire Naxxramas speedrun.
If other top speed running guilds can adapt to this strategy, perhaps they will be able to contest this amazing time. We'll have to wait and see if the time gets pushed lower than 45 minutes and 18 seconds!
