Here at Wowhead we love art - drawing, painting, sculpting, woodworking, metalworking, jewelry making, papercrafting, badge making, everything under the sun.
In an effort to share what our wonderful community does, we are trying out what we like to call the "Wowhead's Artist's Corner"! About once a month, we will feature an artist and their craft. This article will feature a small description about themselves so that you can get to know them just a bit, show off their art, and learn more about what they do. And of course, there will be a special giveaway for one of their items.
This month we will be featuring:
We spoke with Kyle and asked him to tell us a little about himself.
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Kyle "Punk-Art" Herring and I'm an illustrator and character concept artist (More of an illustrator though)
Is your art a hobby or something you would like to make a career out of?
It started out as a hobby but when I hit age 25 (2015) I decided to really start practicing to become a professional artist and it's now my full-time career.
How did you first become interested in World of Warcraft?
I was a huge fan of Warcraft 2 Tides of Darkness on the PlayStation 1. Then when Warcraft 3 came out I was obsessed. And that started everything for me. If not for that game I wouldn't be an artist or even a hobbyist fantasy writer. Then along came the first World of Warcraft Trailer in 2004 I think. My brother downloaded the trailer and brought it home after college and I think I watched it 20+ times in a week. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I wanted to play it so badly but I just didn't have the computer or the internet to play it. It was only until Burning Crusade came out that I managed to get an internet connection to play it. So Warcraft has pretty much always been in my life.
How does World of Warcraft inspire the art that you do?
There are so many great designs and lore in WoW that the inspiration is endless. Most of my WoW related art nowadays are commissions so when I get a task I usually just look at what work is out there for Warcraft on Pinterest or Wowhead.
What is your favorite Warcraft art piece or in-game model or item?
I will always love the works done by Glenn Rane and Will Murai from Blizzard. Their art is magnificent. My favourite in-game models are the Eternal Ones in Ardenweald. I love all of their designs. As far as items are concerned I really liked the Scepter of Sargeras for the Warlock Destruction class. All of those scepter variants are great.
Has your style or practices changed much since your first Warcraft-related artwork to today?
Oh most definitely. I've grown so much since my very first warcraft artwork (at the age of 13-14) to today. I didn't take stuff too seriously back then and thought everything I drew was amazing because I was in my own little world; however with social media, my need to always want to improve, using photoshop with a Cintiq and the new lore of Warcraft has changed pretty much everything. I think I'm a lot better at tapping into the style of Warcraft than I did when I was a kid.
Do you use Wowhead tools such as the model-viewer or dressing room to aid in your artwork?
All the time! I encourage my clients to always send me their character from the model-viewer or dressing room. It's a life saver. The armour in WoW is very intricate and to do dynamic poses I need to know how things are wrapping around the character to make it look right xD
What are your dreams in relation to your art?
I hope to one day do freelance work for Blizzard, that would be a dream come true but I'm open to any opportunities that come my way - anything fantasy or sci-fi related. I'm enjoying painting cards right now for a tabletop RPG called Dragonvault. So that's satisfying my creative itch ^^
