Destruction Warlock in Mythic+ in patch 9.2
In a recent article, we covered
Destrution Warlock in Mythic Sepulcher
after a massive increase in the specs performance. In this article, I am going to cover why Destruction is such a strong spec in Mythic+ currently.
What makes Destruction so strong in Mythic+?
Firstly it's important to remember the reason Destruction is so attractive to bring in your Mythic+ group right now, is the high amount of sustained AoE damage. Single target damage has never been what Destruction has excelled at, but we still do a fair bit of single target damage. The big kicker is the AoE damage. There are a few factors that make for a very strong AoE damage setup. Those are:
Talents
Inferno
- Turns
Pluie de feu
into a soul shard generator, if enough targets are present. Also, the 20% damage increase to this is very strong as this is our biggest damage dealer on AoE.
Pluie du chaos
- Makes you spawn more infernals that do more damage, but more importantly generates you more soul shards.
Conducteur d’âme
- Not quite as important as the two prior, but over the course of an entire dungeon, this talent will end up netting you a good amount of soul shards.
Tier set bonuses
2-Set
-
Rituel de ruine
- Every 10 Soul Shards spent grants Ritual of Ruin, making your next
Trait du chaos
or
Pluie de feu
consume no shards and have no cast time.
4-Set
-
Avatar de destruction
- When
Trait du chaos
or
Pluie de feu
consumes a charge of Ritual of Ruin, you summon a Blasphemy for 8 seconds.
How does this work?
Firstly it's important to understand how
Pluie du chaos
works. When casting your
Invocation : infernal
you gain 30 seconds of this buff. Every time you then consume
Rituel de ruine
proccing
Avatar de destruction
you gain an extra 8 seconds of
Pluie du chaos
. The objective of your gameplay is to generate and spend as many soul shards as you can. You can then again increase the duration of
Pluie du chaos
by spending enough soul shards to proc
Avatar de destruction
again.
Your rotation, if enough mobs are present, will only really consist of casting
Pluie de feu
and
Invocation : infernal
, giving you very high uptime on
Pluie du chaos
.
Increasing the strength of this setup
There are numerous extra things making this setup even stronger, but those mentioned above are the necessary basics.
Legendaries
One big factor that increases the strength of this setup massively is the legendary
Sceau d’invocation supérieure de Wilfred
. This legendary massively decreases the cooldown of
Invocation : infernal
when we generate and spend such a high amount of soul shards. It's not uncommon to bring
Invocation : infernal
all the way down below a 2-minute cooldown, and maybe even further if enough mobs are present.
Covenant
There are two big contenders when it comes to selecting a covenant for Destruction in Mythic+:
Venthyr
Venthyr is strong due to the power of
Catastrophe imminente
with
Explosion perpétuelle confinée
(gained through
Souvenir d’Unité
). This will end up dealing a significant portion of your damage over the course of an entire Mythic+ dungeon. Also, the curses added by
Catastrophe imminente
might actually make things a little bit easier for your group.
The soulbind options for Venthyr are not bad either, as Theotar the Mad Duke offers a strong setup granting you a bunch of secondary stats.
Night Fae
Night fae has been the go-to covenant choice for Warlocks throughout all of Shadowlands so far. And it's still a very strong contender due to a few things. Firstly, the legendary power
Sacoche d’âme moribonde
(gained through
Souvenir d’Unité
) gives a great deal of haste and crit when used on multiple targets, and this is where we benefit most from these.
The soulbind options for Night Fae is where the real value lies. Korayn gives you the
Frappe initiale
trait which can be massive value for Destruction. This is mainly because
Pluie de feu
doesn't trigger
Frappe initiale
, which means you can cast
Pluie de feu
onto a group of mobs, and then proc
Frappe initiale
on one mob at a time giving you a bigger uptime on this. Now, this was more manageable prior to gaining the 4-set bonus making you summon multiple infernals, as these infernals will proc
Frappe initiale
. However, this can still be of great value.
Alternatively, as a Night Fae you can play Dreamweaver granting you powerful traits such as
Champ de fleurs
,
Arpenteur de rêve
and
Cocon curatif
.
Conclusion
The current strength of Destruction in Mythic+ right now is a result of numerous factors ultimately increasing the specs potential, especially on multiple targets and in Mythic+. The recent 5% aura buff also contributes to the state of Destructions performance right now, but looking at the overall damage performance over the course of an entire dungeon currently, Destruction is significantly more than 5% ahead of other specs.
Destruction Warlock Nerfs
As Destruction was performing so well in Mythic+, we got hit by a little bit of a nerf:
Inferno (Talent) now has a reduced chance for Rain of Fire to generate Soul Shard Fragments when it deals damage beyond 5 targets (was 8).
This nerf certainly does reduce the amount of soul shards you generate through
Pluie de feu
+
Inferno
, but even on 5 targets, the majority of the soul shards would be wasted anyways as we're generating more soul shards than we can spend. This nerf doesn't change anything when fighting less than 5 targets but is in my opinion a better nerf than if we were to get nerfed by x% damage across the board.
