Every year, during Children's Week, Horde players have the opportunity to take a Blood Elf orphan named Salandria out on some adventures. One quest that stands out involves taking her to the Caverns of Time, where an interaction with a Bronze Dragon hints at something quite dark in the Blood Elf child's future.
With Dragonflight on its way, and Salandria showing up in 9.2.5 quests, we have reason to believe that we will soon finally learn more.
Personality
Little Salandria is a spirited child who isn't easily intimidated by scary stories or even dangerous places. One of the things she asks you to do is take her to see the Dark Portal - and when you're there, she finds it fascinating rather than frightening.
The grown-ups are always trying to tell us scary stories about it and how it's so dangerous, with lots of demons, and stuff.
<Salandria rolls her eyes.>
The stories don't even come close to how cool this place is. It's amazing!
Throughout her quests, Salandria speaks animatedly about her big dreams for the future. While she struggles to settle on exactly what she wants to be when she grows up, there is a common theme - she wants power.
One day soon, I'm going to be a powerful mage, or maybe a warlock. I'm gonna have to learn about some of the elemental forces!
I'm not sure what I want to be. Maybe a mage or a warlock, or a Blood Knight, like I said before? Or maybe... A rock star!!
Even her desire to become a rock star, while cute, is still subtly linked to her taste for power.
Did you see that? They were cheering for me!! I felt the power and the energy! I am going to be a rock star when I grow up!
But the most interesting thing happens when the player takes Salandria to visit the Caverns of Time.
Dragons
As Salandria enters the Caverns of Time, some Wardens of Time run forward to attack her. They're stopped by the bronze dragon Zaladormu, who berates the wardens for attempting to punish the child for something she "might do, or fail to do, in the future".
This girl has done nothing, and will not be held accountable for what she might do, or fail to do, in the future.
Salandria is shaken by the encounter, but brushes it off when the player gives her a
玩具龙
. As she takes the toy, Salandra announces that she plans to own a real dragon one day, hinting, possibly, at the thing she might do in the future that could cause dragons to want to kill her on sight.
Awesome! A dragon of my very own! Someday I plan to own a real one.
<Salandria slyly eyes her new toy, the gears within her mind turning.>
Adoption
Once the questline is finished, players receive a letter from Salandria, thanking them for the adventures and letting them know she has been adopted by none other than Lady Liadrin herself, matriarch of the Blood Knights.
Lady Liadrin, the leader of the Blood Knights, has asked that I be released to her custody for training in Silvermoon City!
For many years, that was the end of her story - but with Patch 9.2.5 and possibly Dragonflight, that's about to change.
Salandria in 9.2.5
Warning: This section contains spoilers from 9.2.5
While we may be able to repeat Salandria's Children's Week questline every year, canonically it happened during the Burning Crusade. Many years have passed in-game as well as out since then, and Salandria is all grown up.
In a 9.2.5 Blood Elf questline that's currently on the PTR, we get to see this ourselves. During an investigation into Scourge activity in Quel'thalas, Salandria shows up as a Blood Knight trainee. She's as spirited as ever, both eager and impatient to prove herself.
Salandria says: UGH--finally! It feels as if I've been in training for ages. Send me to Tranquillien!
Lady Liadrin says: Salandria... This will be no easy task. More will be expected of you than any other.
Salandria says: Then I should prove myself, right? You said it yourself--we'll hold the line and keep Quel'thalas safe. I intend to do just that!
The slightly darker side of Salandria is also hinted at, though very subtly. In a quest that takes us into Bastion, Salandria and the player run a race against a kyrian, one who happens to be the ascended soul of Liadrin's own adopted guardian.
Let us run a race. Along the course, ring the bells. If your heart is pure, they will aid your speed. You must have at least five bells recently rung in order to complete the race.
Do not be distracted by shortcuts. And do not try to cheat to get ahead, it will not work.
Despite Vandellor's warnings, Salandria runs off the path and attempts to cheat, ringing a suspicious-looking bell that she hopes might grant an extra boost. It doesn't work and she is cowed, but that instinct to chase power is still very clearly there.
Salandria says: This looks like it might give us an edge!
Vandellor yells: Often what looks like a shortcut only leads to grief. Stay true to your path.
Salandria says: Stay true to my path.
The Story of 9.2.5
Salandria in Dragonflight?
With Salandria showing up in 9.2.5 as headstrong as ever, and Dragonflight taking us back to the Dragon Isles, it feels very much like we may finally see the future that had the bronze dragons in the Caverns of Time so worried. Of course, as Zaladormu pointed out, her future is not set in stone. She may do something terrible in the future - or she may not.
Either way, we love seeing her story continue like this, and very much hope to see more!
