Second Thoughts on Brewmaster Monk in Dragonflight
Is Brewmaster good? Yes. It’s always good, and that’s not changing.
There are some whoopsies in the tree, but every class has some bad talents. Brewmaster has an insanely strong spec tree, one of the best in the game, and it's looking extremely good right now.
No more preamble, let’s just dive right into what’s good and bad in the talent tree.
Brewmaster Monk Talents
Here is a normal talent setup. It is oriented slightly toward raiding, and you could easily justify swapping
太极鞋
in favor of
流云身法
in pure single target.
There is a serious degree of wiggle room in this tree. You can use whichever you prefer of
碧玉疾风
and
特别快递
. You can take
活力苏醒
if you feel comfortable using it effectively. You can travel through
强化玄牛下凡
toward the bottom of the tree, if you like. You can take the center-right path toward the bottom through
幻灭连击
if you prefer.
迎面铁掌
is pretty worthless, and
反击
is buggy (despite being a decent DPS talent), so you can take that pair of talents for easy pathing toward
精序兵戈
, or invest in
醉踪步
for more defensive value at the loss of some damage (and
玄牛伴身
).
The point of the talent system redesign was to give players options. It is working.
The Monk Class Tree – A.K.A. The “What’s Bad?” Section
The left half of the class tree is really bad. It’s almost all Mistweaver talents that have zero value for Brewmaster Monks in combat. Forcing Brewmaster and Windwalker Monks to path through
抚慰之雾
to get
强化滚地翻
makes zero sense. This is probably the single worst decision Blizzard made across both sides of the Brewmaster Monk talent tree.
抚慰之雾
is less efficient in terms of healing per Energy than baseline
活血术
, and it’s a channel, so it’s completely impractical to use in combat and inefficient to do so out of combat. There is literally no reason to ever keybind it, but it is a top-of-tree talent, for some reason. Swapping the locations of
抚慰之雾
and
强化滚地翻
would solve this issue. It would create a more symmetrical, balanced design, as well, with a mobility skill on each side and a damage skill in the middle. That's more elegant than this current design that forces two of the class' specs to waste points on a literally worthless heal so they can reclaim the mobility they have had as a baseline class feature since 2012.
真气波
is a pretty minor rotational filler, and getting to it costs at least two points in very mediocre filler options, in addition to the two points listed above. You can drop it, and them, for other nodes in the tree. It's a small sacrifice -- but there's not a lot of exciting options to take in its place, either.

and
疾言厉色
are core functionality of the base class that have existed since the
Mists of Pandaria
Beta, and they are now being ransomed back to Monks one talent point at a time. Getting new stuff feels good. Buying back what used to be baseline does not. Because you have to spend so many points reacquiring core functionality like the above, or
壮胆酒
, or
切喉手
, or
分筋错骨
, you can’t afford to pick up the semi-interesting new small bonuses like
豪饮四方
and
疾风步
.
Looking through the Monk Class tree as a Brewmaster is frustrating. There are new talents, and while most of them are pretty weak, some of them provide group utility that would feel nice to have. Unfortunately, you can’t reasonably afford to bring that utility because you’re too busy spending points pathing through barely-useful/literally worthless talents to pick up core functionality you need to survive.
The Brewmaster Spec Tree – A.K.A. The “What’s Good?” Section
Tired of negativity? Good news: The spec tree is great. Yes, the class tree is disappointing, but getting both
散魔功
and
躯不坏
simultaneously is a really strong defensive boost to a tank that is already very tanky. The bad pathing and deliberate inefficiencies in the class tree are annoying, but that doesn't matter. This new talent system is a serious power increase for Brewmaster Monks thanks to the spec tree.
In the spec tree, you have a huge number of offensive cooldown options available near the bottom:

. There’s excellent talent synergy elsewhere in the tree, as well. Here are some more examples:

There are some gripes, such as being forced through

, which sucks, to get
反击
.
反击
is good, but setting a point on fire to reach it is not.
The support talents for
骨尘酒
and
精序兵戈
are a little underwhelming, as well. (OH, WE’LL BE GETTING TO
气冲九霄
IN THE BUGS SECTION, DON’T YOU WORRY!)
无常虚妄
was added to replace a Crackling Jade Lightning talent that never worked or was worth considering anyways, and it used to be excellent back in Legion, due to Brewmasters chugging way more Brews than they do now. It's okay now, about 3%-ish more dodge overall. Not a bad little point, but not life-changing, either, and it has a bug of its own, as well.
There are still some stinkers in the spec talent tree, but pathing around them is pretty painless.

isn’t quite as weak as the talents above, but it is an inconsistent, unrewarding design that essentially does the same thing as other talents below it in the tree, just worse. The damage reduction effect stacks with
幻灭连击
's Breath of Fire effect, but it will be removed if you cast another Breath of Fire, which you have to do to maintain
灼焰炙气
.
Brew Cooldown Scaling
Increased cooldown scaling is one of the strongest and most fun mechanics in WoW – just ask a Protection Warrior!
Monks have increased cooldown scaling with Brews, and due to some incredibly strong talent synergies (
灼焰炙气
,
萨萨拉比姆的力量
), Spinning Crane Kick is poised to totally replace Tiger Palm in the core rotation. Because of this, you might expect Brew cooldown reduction in Dragonflight to be lower – HOWEVER,
砧与桶
&
幻灭连击
improve Brew availability to the point that taking either of them (just one, not both!) will make Brew cooldowns in Dragonflight shorter on average than they have been throughout Shadowlands.
The math is a big, boring infodump, so I’ll spare you, but you can have more Brews to chug in Dragonflight playing a Spinning Crane Kick-spamming playstyle than you did in Shadowlands playing a Tiger Palm-casting playstyle. That’s not even including
玄牛酒
, which is a pretty expensive talent, but can provide a full Energy bar and some clutch defensive value.
Offensively, Brewmaster Monk is looking very good.

Folks, it’s good.
Bugs
Most of the pressing bugs with Brewmasters have been fixed in recent Beta builds. This is great news. Here's a list of some recent concerns:
骨尘酒
- The cooldown is not reduced by Keg Smash and Tiger Palm. This is a pretty major reduction to this talent's value. It's still a pretty good offensive cooldown, but not as great or reliable as it was throughout Shadowlands.
This has finally been fixed!
反击
- If you consume the buff by using Spinning Crane Kick, then dodge again during that SCK and trigger another proc, the final tick of Spinning Crane Kick will consume the second buff without increasing the damage.
无常虚妄
- Celestial Brew does not trigger this.
Also fixed!
In addition to the above list, the
气冲九霄
DoT effect was being applied by TONS of other spells, causing Brewmaster Monks to deal hilarious amounts of damage in the early rounds of raid testing. This has thankfully been fixed. Brewmaster Monks doing over 100k DPS was funny, but not actually very useful for testing.
Final Thoughts
How does Monk actually play in Dragonflight when compared to Shadowlands?
The playstyle is considerably more offensive, but the results are every bit as tanky as Brewmaster Monk was throughout the majority of Shadowlands, Battle for Azeroth, Legion, etc.
The core rotation isn't all that different, but you do have to account for

, which can mean dropping
碧玉疾风
. You definitely can still use both. There is a bit of rotational friction, but using both together is the optimal setup for max DPS.
Brewmaster Monks now have a massive collection of offensive and defensive cooldowns:

The revamped talent system has really flipped Monk’s design on its head. Historically, Monk was a class with a small, efficient collection of powerful rotational skills. It had strong base defenses, but very little in the way of offensive and defensive cooldowns, and the self-healing tools were fairly limited. Now, Brewmaster Monks have around 5-6 on-GCD offensive cooldowns available in a standard talent setup, a bare minimum of 3 major defensive cooldowns (not including Celestial Brew), a bunch of self-healing talents, and you have to fit
旭日东升踢
into the core rotation.
It is a strong tank, arguably stronger than ever, but that increase in strength comes with a significant increase in complexity. This isn’t all bad, there’s a ton of depth for dedicated players to explore, and lots of room for adapting the talent tree to handle different offensive and defensive needs, but it will come with a pretty steep learning curve at the start of Dragonflight.
Buy a 52-button mouse and grow some extra fingers. You're going to need them.
