with holy shield (and redoubt) being the main paladin tanking skills, i worked my way into +shield value gear; atm blocking 377dmg with an unbuffed block.. with frequency of paladin's blocks, i would say that i have a pretty good deal there :)
getting this asap :)

Credit to Aerisala < Divine Right >, Warsong... I copied this from the WoW Warrior forums...
"Base block value +54, on use: +200 block value for 20 seconds, 2 minute cooldown.
Let's think about that for a second. Shield Slam adds your block value to your slam, so it's adding 254 pre-mitigation damage (330 with Shield Mastery). So let's see how that would stack up in terms of, say, AP added to a Mortal Strike.
On a Mortal Strike the damage is calculated thusly:
Weapon Damage (rolls a number between your base and max weapon damage) + ( (Attack Power / 14 DPS per AP) * weapon speed )
Damage added from AP on a Mortal Strike is that second part. So how much equivalent AP would you have to add to add as much damage as the Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker adds to your shield slam?
Base:
70.2 = AP / 14 * 3.5
AP = 280.8
Activated:
330.2 = AP / 14 * 3.5
AP = 1320.8
Pretty ridiculous, huh? The auto-blocker trinket is the same thing as being able to add 1320.8 AP to your Mortal Strike for 20 seconds every 2 minutes, and adding 280.8 AP when not activated. That's just insane. With some of the gear set-ups I've been playing around with, it's very possible to see around a 350 base block, and when the 200 is activated you'd have (550 * 1.3) 715 block with Shield Mastery, plus the average 430 damage from the normal shield slam for a total of 1145 pre-mitigation damage. If you crit that with impale you're gonna be nailing someone for 2748 damage with your SHIELD. That's Spartan-esque."

got this trinket after farming some heroics, now i'm at 440-500 shieldblock-value, it simply helps me gain aggro on bosses very fast .. i know it blocks a trinket-slot where you could put +sta or +def trinkets that would be better for dmg-migitation - so it simply depends on your current equip if this trinket is usefull for you or not

As a paladin, I would only consider getting this after you've reached immunity to Crushing blows...
You'll find shield block RATING, not VALUE, better for tanking..
once you've reached that magical immunity to crits and crushing blows... Then block VALUE is worth it, as the only attacks that hit you will be blocks.

I just can't get myself to put this on my warrior over Moroes' Watch or Styleen's Scarab. Judging by the above comments I guess this is more for protection paladins?

Sorry, but mitigation value only, I cann't and don't want to count possible damage done by 59 block value. Let's make some Math.
Passive effect:
1 block value is equal to 0,65 Rating point, then 59 block value is equal to 33,85 rating points. It means you can possibly find equal cost/rarity/usefulness trinket that will give you 34 dodge, parry or defence rating. But we all know that best defence trinket can give 32 rating points for rare and 38 as Epic. 34 compared to 32 and 38 isn't realy good. This item CAN NOT be called EPIC
Now real word. 59block value is 59X130% = +77 damage blocked each strike. Ok.
We all know that ~many Heroic trash hits for around 2k every 1,5sec on 15k armour, with average 500 block dmg absorbed it becomes 1500 and 1500 - 77 = 1423. 1500/1423 = less 0,5% damage absorbed. Compared to Moroes Lucky pocket watch, what gives 38 dodge rating or 1,8% mitigation Auto-blocker Absolute Crap, Math proved. This numbers will be even worse when u will face Heroic Boss or Raid boss. It will be less dramatical if you will compare this to more regular trinkets, but 0,5% mitigation for trinket still TIny (trinket with 32 defence rating will result triple mitigation effect)
Active effect:
200 block value = equal of 130 rating for 20 sec. Any rare defence trinket can give 125 defence or parry r dodge rating. I don't want to calculate again, numbers will be exacly same: this will still worse for at least 2 times to any possible rare lvl 70 Defence rating trinket.
P.s. Is it usable? I don't think so, but it will be less dramatical if you'r healer is Druid in tree from, because high dodge and parry chances theoretically resulting more over heal when lots of HoT spells ticking on you, unlike fixed each-strike-minor-mitigation provided by block value.

Just to bolster what you are saying, Lightbeard has made a two further critical errors (and some non-critical ones I'll ignore). He is ignoring the Shield Block ability, which guarantees a warrior two blocked attacks every 5 seconds. Well ok 6s talented, but 5 second cooldown. He is also ignoring that this trinket has a 20 second duration, yet Moroes' trinket has a 10 second duration. Lets take a look at the combat table for a few examples, and see at what point Moroes's Lucky Pocket Watch becomes better than the Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker 600.
Below, I have two examples of how the breakeven point is calculated.
*** DEFINITIONS
Moroes's Lucky Pocket Watch (passive and activated averaged):
38 (2.01%) dodge rating (activation 300 dodge rating for 10sec, 2m CD)
18.923 rating per 1% dodge, so:
( 38+(300*10/120) ) / 18.923 = 3.329% dodge average
Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker 600 (passive and activated averaged):
59 block value (200 block value for 20sec, 2m CD)
30% increased block from warrior talents, so:
(59+(200*20/120)) * 1.3 = 120.03 average block value
*** EXAMPLE EXPLANATION
A Karazhan geared warrior will typically have 20% dodge, 20% parry, 30% block, 30% full hit and 400 base block value. Furthermore they have 2 guaranteed blocks in 5 seconds if they activate Shield Block. If an attack not dodged, not parried, and all shield block charges have been used up, it will have an equal chance to be blocked as it will to hit.
Assume mob attack speed is 2.0sec, 2.5 attacks per 5sec, and it does not have 5% miss penalty. Yes we're ignoring Thunderclap, yes we're ignoring parry eating shield block charges, sue me.
If the mob attacks for X amount of damage, we can construct a formula to represent at what point the auto-blocker become worse than the lucky pocket watch. That is, if the mob attacks for a small amount (say, 400) then its attack will be completed blocked out by the warrior's block value, If the mob hits for 50 harder, then the auto blocker becomes better because it allows the extra damage to be completely blocked as well. How much harder does the mob have to hit for the autoblocker to become worse?
*** EXAMPLE 1
Assume one mob, 2.5 attacks over 5 seconds, 2 guaranteed to block instead of hit:
0.5 dodged
0.5 parried
1.5 blocked
With pocket watch:
0.583 dodged
0.5 parried
1.417 blocked
Unmitigated damage done: (X- 0.00) * 2.500
Normal Damage done: (X-400.00) * 1.500
Gnomer Damage done: (X-520.03) * 1.500
Moroes Damage done: (X-400.00) * 1.417
Solving for X:
(X-400.00) * 1.417 = (X-520.03) * 1.500
1.417X - 566.8 = 1.5X - 780.047
0.083X = 213.247
X = 2569 damage breakeven point
*** EXAMPLE 2
Assume 4 mobs, 10 attacks over 5 seconds:
2 dodged
2 parried
2 guaranteed blocks
2 chance blocks
2 full hits
With pocket watch:
2.2332 dodged
2 parried
2 guaranteed blocks
1.8834 chance blocks
1.8834 full hits
Unmitigated damage done: (X- 0.00) * 10.000
Normal Damage done: (X-400.00) * 4.000 + X*2
Gnomer Damage done: (X-520.03) * 4.000 + X*2
Moroes Damage done: (X-400.00) * 3.8834 + X*1.8834
Solving for X:
(X-400.00) * 3.8834 + X*1.8834 = (X-520.03) * 4.000 + X*2
5.7668X - 1553.36 = 6X - 2080.12
0.2332X = 526.76
X = 2259 damage breakeven point
So, there you go, "math proved".

If you're farming heroics for the hundreds of badges you need post-2.3, you definitely want to maximize your Block Value.
This one of the best +Block Value items you can get, pre-Zul'Aman and 25-man raids.

563 Block Value total
*3/3 Shield Spec'd: 732 Block Value
732 damage off each hit is massive. Turn on the Auto-blocker and you take 992 off each block. 8 Holy Shield blocks and that's a whopping 7,932 damage mitigated -- nothing to laugh at.
Note that generally choosing block value itemization will lower your overall avoidance. Make sure you fill up your other item slots/sockets with enough to reach uncrittable/uncrushable.

Prot paladins can get a huge mitigation boost from this trinket in AoE situations, especially at the T4-T5 levels.
The "Equip" effect is worth roughly 77 block value. In a situation like tanking Murlocs on Morogrim, that can easily amount to a 10% reduction in the size of a single attack. Between Holy Shield and Redoubt you should be blocking between 40% and 50% of all attacks that land, so the passive effect alone is a significant damage reduction.
The "Use" effect is even more impressive, especially if you alternate or combine it with the Use effect of Figurine of the Colossus. With proper use of this trinket you can make things significantly easier for your healers in "burst" AoE-tanking situations.
I wouldn't recommend it as one of your first badge purchases for a Prot paladin, but it's a very handy trinket to have in your bag.

1 of the best trinkets for prot warr IMO, used to crit curator in evocation phase over 3k shield slams with this one used (blue geared mostly). Really dunno which 1 can replace it for everday usage :P

Does this trinket add any noticeable mitigitation? Or is it mainly a TPS boost?
I guess Huge Shield Slam crits are fun , but I can't bring myself to sacrifice a trinket spot for it. 41 badges doesn't seem worth it for those few fights where a full protection warrior has problems generating TPS. So all-round,
https://www.cuckhead.com/tbc/item=27891
still seems better unless I'm missing out on something here.

The problem with Adamantite Figurine is the "use on" effect is beaten by a simple Stoneshield Potion if you desire extra armor
I assume a tank always desires more armor, but with that logic you could refrain from enchanting stamina on your gear by using a Flask of the Titans instead. But why would you? :)
Now, both trinkets grant damage reduction, but does the 200 Block Value really grant more mitigation than 1200 armor? You and everyone else sound convinced, so I have to ask: How can you be sure?
You could use both the Adamantine Figurine as well as an Elixir that grants armor. I would, and I commonly do. Remember that there are no diminishing returns on armor. The more you have, the more valuable the next percent of damage reduction becomes.
What I was wondering was how much mitigation the trinket's 59 or 259 Block Value grants? It seems strange to me, that so many people recommend getting this item, even though it doesn't seem to grant much else than nice TPS peaks. And unless playing with people who vastly outgear you, those peaks don't exactly seem like something you'd spend a trinket slot on.

Shield Slam is modified by block value. Not only does this increase your shield slam damage by 59 (which for a protection warrior is more than half a sunder right there), it lets you get in 3-4 shield slams for an additional 1k threat over 20 seconds. Not bad for additional threat or extra damage on fights which require a quick burst.

I'm so pissed!
IMO, this trinket sux!
I bought this trinket yesterday and the 2 blue quality trinkets I already have give me a better block and overall defense rating. By replacing my Dabiri's Enigma with the auto-blocker I lost .5% block rating and my other trinket has a better defense rating than Dabiri's Enigma. Dabiri's Enigma is a quest reward in Netherstorm and my other trinket, Adamantine Figurine, drops off the second boss in Shadow Labs.
Luckally I did not sell my blue trinket to vendor but I wish I had a recipt for the auto-blocker so I could return it and get my 41 BOJ back.

would've been the best trinket on my list besides the one you could get from kara if only there was one change: 'use - increases the block RATING of your shield by (ok, maybe not 200... 80?) for 20 seconds. (+10%) 200 would be +25% block chance, excellent for warrior, but really really high for pally >.> (holy shield, + redoubt + 200 block rating + additional block rating gear = easily over 100% block chance.

As a prot warrior I am not too bothered by Block Rating, using Shield Block + whatever parry dodge and miss chance there is you are never going to be hit so loong as you have rage.
Value... now that's a different story, being able to block Raid trash for another 10% of their damage is pretty nice, with the talent that's 77 extra block value befoire the proc...

Awesome for an AoE-tanking Prot paladin. If he's specialized in block value, popping this could cause most attacks to be completely blocked (0 damage taken). Rage isn't an issue either.

I've noticed a big difference on the threat meter with this trinket, mainly when I pop the trinket.
That's my favorite thing about shield block value. Not for the damage amount blocked (which is nice too), but for the added dmg/threat to shield slam. Very nice trinket!

Yep, Block Value only smooth off the damage u are taken and ease the healers' pressure. For AOE tanking, auto-blocker help to decrease the damage you are taken, but pure avoidance remain first priority. Also, a tankadin who has +250 spell damage doesnt need to generate threat through block, spam AOE and veng/righ will be enough.
