Lower City is full of "immigrants" as the lore says. His name is Griftah, the guy who sell the amulets. It's a play on words with Grifter.
Grifter - noun Slang.
1. a person who operates a side show at a circus, fair, etc., esp. a gambling attraction.
**2. a swindler, dishonest gambler, or the like.**
This is exactly what it is, it just adds depth to the game by having a shady merchant around in the lower class area of the city.

If this would actually give a higher chance to drop greens, epics or whatever, wouldn't everyone be using this in a while? That's why it doesn't work. It would be one of the most powerful items in the game.
The item does nothing.

And RE: Evilgm, it was not sold by him in 2.2, he was moved outside the city gates but this item (and only this item) was REMOVED from his inventory...suspicious...but anyway, it is back now that 2.3 is live.

You know, since it IS a level 60 item, it just might do something that you don't know about. Arguably, since there are no long term tests on the viability of such an item, it is impossible to say whether or not it works. Arguably, one could purchase the item, farm say, SFK 1000 times without the amulet, and then again 1000 times with it just to see if it alters the loot table. Since there are many many conflicting statements, where some say it is stupid nonsense, and others say that it works, why not look into it?

According to Bliz, the loot dropped by every single mob and boss in the game isn't calculated when you kill it, it's calculated when the NPC is generated.
This item therefore can't possibly do anything of it's own accord. The anecdotes reported here are instances of dumb luck, the same as "I got my loot on the first kill," (as opposed to "I've been farming this quest item for 100 kills and it still hasn't dropped". both are dumb luck).

Ok...
Lots of crap about this and about that... Don't believe the screenshot about the GM as it looks and sounds fake.
Items with some use have white text. Useless items have grey text. (the item itself)
I have this on EVERY alt of mine. I did a simple test in that I bought one of these and began to use it in and out of instances. I ran the same instance 3 times with it on and 3 times with it off and compared the results. I got more loot with it on.
Typically in a normal instance on my loots I get 10-14 greens to come up and the WHOLE rest of the party maybe one.
You can hem and haw and bs but the proof is in buying it and using it.
My name is Glove and I am on the Alleria server and am the guild leader of The Significant Figures. Run any instance with me and we will count the items that come up on our loots (normal group loot). I guarantee when wearing this talisman I will win every time.

Unlike the others, this one addresses a part that isn't easily proven. The only way to prove it is to find it in the coding. Short of that, a large population and data would be needed to find if there is a significant difference. The problem for here if it does affect drop rates is the drop data for items.
... that it "might" do what it claims... it would be a very long time.
Good. Luck.

Although the seller's name means "Scammer", and some of his amulets really are for-fun junk items, this one seems to work.
The thing is that loot-table is created for a single mob when it spawns. This amulet, of course, cant change the loot table of the mob you hit, BUT when monsters respawn near you, or you enter an instance, it seems that the amulet increases the percent chance of the blue items to "spawn inside" the mobs.
Thats why it will not make u get more epics without grinding, and thats why people report more blues in instances.
I dont want you to believe that this thing will make you rich... And of course - in most cases - everything depends on luck, and this amulet will never override "natural" drop chance. But it DOES improve it slightly.

My other friend had been grinding for 2 days to get a Night Watch Shortsword to drop was online and I decided to help him get it. I come, kill 1 target, Night Watch Shortsword drops. Maybe this is just a coincidence, but I sent it to my level 33 hunter the next day and killed a Burning Blade Auger in Desolace and Combatant Claymore dropped. I am pretty sure this item works.

Ok I've had this item on all my alts for a few months now.
It works like this: In an instance more items show on my loots than for the whole rest of the group. This includes grey (trash) items, blues, and greens. A typical run showed that in Scholo with a group of 5 people 3 blues, 14 greens, and a bunch of trash showed when I looted my corpses. For the WHOLE rest of the party only 1 green turned over for 1 person.
I dont win every item but it definitely helps our groups to get loot when I do a lot of the looting.
Casters have said that they dont get as many items to drop when they use it. It seems to be more effective with melee players.
My surmising is that it affects the loot table. It doesnt make a mob have loot but each mob is spawned with a specific loot table and it is my theory that this necklace moves the marker up and down for loot that can drop. Before you bash it look at the tables between heroic and normal... mostly they are the same mobs just harder with more/different/better stats loot on their table lists.

This thing does nothing, Blizzard isn't nice enough to put a item in the game that would increase the drop rate of rare itmes of your mobs. In fact it just further demonstrates their cruelty by putting these "magic pendants" in the game knowing all the idiots that play their game will waste money trying them.
Everyone saying he is a swinder is correct, stick around the vendor for awhile and you can even read a little comment from Grok about his penandant not working.

However, I've only had one blue drop until this item, which has now increased to 6, and my green drops (while fighting boulderfist ogres north of Telaar) have increased substantially. Also, I get less gray items and more white ones like netherweave and the samples.
It's not a complete failure but it's not worth the money you pay.

Soap on a Rope:
Does nothing. You don't need to bathe in WOW.
Tikbalang Ward:
(This says it all)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tikbalang
In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Griftah, a Troll Vendor in Shattrath City's Lower City district in Outland, sells an Infallible Tikbalang Ward: A novelty necklace with the inscription, "With this trusty warding talisman, no tikbalang will ever find you and steal you away from the treetops. It really works!" While this is a silly easter egg, it is utterly a scam and the item does nothing.
Stone of Stupendous Springing Strides:
You already have the ability to jump over stuff.
This is only 3 of the items which are obviously ambiguous like a fortune cookie. The others are just as blatantly unspecific for a reason. Griftah's kind of like that John "Biggest !@#$%^ in the Universe" Edwards guy. Need I say more?
评论来自
Allakhazam
People, I can understand why you would think this would do anything, but to be honest... its fake. All the things this guy sells are nothing more then "Fortune Cookies". Every one of them is true, but you dont need it to be true. So for instance, your runing around and some epic item drops, or your in an instance and an epic drops (a rare epic) and your NOT wearing this. What caused it? Luck of the draw. But if you where wearing this it tricks you into thinking "OMG! THE THING REALLY WORKS!". The way fortue cookies work. But it cant afect drop rate. Because the loot tables are set dependent on spawn. Has nothing to do with what your wearing when your around them. So far I have had 2 rare world epic's drop since the time i have started playing WoW, before BC, and before this thing existed. And their have been people that have played since it first came out, that have never seen an epic world drop. So this Talismin does nothing. Just messes with the way you look at luck.

OK so the possibility of it really doing something amazing are so very very small. I was on my second day grinding for a smithing recipe when a friend suggested I get this. The recipe dropped on the third day and the talisman probably had nothing to do with it, but I forgot to take it off.
I was happily killing level 70 Demon Hunter Initiates when the incredible did happen. Namely Don Santos' Famous Hunting Rifle. Now was this due to the talisman? Who knows? but this gun is a lvl 70 epic and has a 1 in 136,000 chance in dropping off several elites that live in instances. No listing for dropping off non-elite blood elves.
So was this due to the talisman, no idea. Not sure this rifle could have dropped without a little extra help though. Both a level 70 hunter guildie and I have been made very very happy though.

This talisman doesn't have an effect at all. Like all the other "magical" items you can buy from the vendor it only exists to make fun of how different things in WoW work.
Let's say you killed a boar and it had an epic 2handed sword hidden deep inside its stomach, right? Riiight...that's what this item wants to tell us.
Just think about it, it's nothing more but a little joke. It won't increase the droprate of items for you as the droprate isn't affected by the player. Instead it's randomly generated for every item.
And for those of you who are screaming "OMFG I HAD AN EPIC DROP WHILE WEARING THIS IT WORKZ!", the epic item would have dropped even without this incredible superitem...

Well we keep on goin and yet again another mob drops the scarlet boots..... Coincidence?..
well then after we killed everyone and start headin back to entrance...spawns appeared. so we start killin again and Burning War Axe appeared. So tell me why all these items have a .02% drop rate and yet all 3 dropped in 1 instance run. Needless to say these ppl will be usin me as a tank in all their instance runs.
tell me its a joke item and ill /pimpslap you.

Okay, I'm gonna clear this up once and for all. Every single amulet Griftah sells does exactly what it says it will do. However, all they are claiming is stuff that already happens!
"No tikbalang will ever find you" Duh
"the ability to bound over obstacles and across small gaps" It's called "jump"
"Allows you to move through the seas" You guessed it - Swimming!
"Keeps dangerous critters at bay" True, since critters are yellow
"draw great energy from ordinary food and drink - even heal wounds!" Happens anyway
"anchors your spirit to the world, allowing you to come back from the most dreadful of demises once your essence returns to where you perished" Sounds a lot like a corpse run to me
and finally:
"Wearing this, one might find the rarest of items in the most mundane of locales!" Yup, you sure might. That's kinda the point of grinding isn't it?
All the text is yellow and in quotation marks. A lot of other items have those little extra fun text at the bottom and we don't don't believe those! Any item that has anything useful to it will be written green, and will say "Equip:....." or "Use:......"

on easy fights i will through this thing on, and see if it yeilds me anything
with it on ... 0 greens, 0 blues, without it .... 1 blue, 87 greens =/
yeah i wasted some money, but it got me excited, and so readily destroyed that excitement.. leaving a small glimmer of hope....
just as every second of this game does, just a little more
worthless yet fun.. not a waste of money, but don't expect this to make you rich, anyways if you are lvling .. you are making 100 to 120 gold a day grinding quest ... whats the harm in buying something fun..?

Ok look, I've read all you guys have had to say. My personal experience:
I acquired the Talisman at 65 from the vendor. I have always felt that my green drop rate was fair to good - I was happy with it anyway. In all my questing to 65, I have never (to my recollection) had blue drops, outside instances obviously. In any event the good drops have always been a few levels below mine.
Since wearing the Talisman it seems to me that my green drop rate has declined (this might be related to level I don't know) but I have had two stunning blue drops which were almost too good to be true and certainly completely outside my experience up to 65. One was for pants two levels above my level at the time of the drop and which I kept and used because it had such awesome qualities.
The other drop was Design: Smooth Dawn Stone which I put on auction for 450 gold and it sold within two hours - I definitely asked too little but the point is this is more than 10 times what the Talisman cost - by far the most I have ever made at AH probably because I don't really do instances and the best drop I have ever had.
Now if this is not attributable to the Talisman - its at least enough to make me think...and to keep it on.

I stuck a 16" railroad spike completely through my head before logging in, and I had the entire bloodfang set drop off of hogger! You guys should really try it, it works 10 times better than this necklace.

Everything Griftah sells is useless. It makes you able to do things you already can do, such as jump and swim and protects you from dangers that are not there :P

notice that word in the description? you might find the rarest of items in mundane places. well finding the Quel'Serrar book in a dusty tome counted as a rare item in a mundane place in pre-TBC. nowdays an especially rare pattern or item dropping off a grind-mob MIGHT happen... regardless of whether you wear this or not

This guy gets drafted, trained, and get shipped off to war, later he bumps into an old friend.
The old friend notices his old chum is wearing all manner of religious icons, lucky charms, and a few other things he didn't recognize.
The old friend says, "Hey man, what's all this? I've known you a long time and you never believed in this silly stuff."
His old chum simply says, "Man, we could be dead any minute now, so I'm not taking any chances!"
The moral of the story is: "Believe what you want. You'll still be dead!"
Blahahaha!

Somebody up there posted a reference to magic find items in D2. Anyone who played D2 knows how cheesy the game was at that point (perfect topaz socketed tarnhelms... >:P) and believe me, Blizz knows it too. That was a blatant last ditch effort to save the failing hack-riddled game (and in that game, the loot wasn't rolled up until the kill so whoever killed it actually did have an influence on what dropped). An item like this cannot do what you hopeful souls are imagining unless it actually spawns the mobs for you.
(by the way, it doesn't actually claim to do anything special, just like every other thing griftah sells)
Common sense, folks. The whole Griftah guy is one big comic interlude. I know we'd all like to believe that Blizz would tuck a secret juicy bit in with all of the useless garbage this guy sells but there is no Easter Bunny, no Tooth Fairy, and this ammy doesn't do anything. Please save your gold...
...for that AWESOME jumping ammy! now THAT works! I tried jumping 200 times with and w/o it and I definitely think I can jump a teensy farther wearing it than without. ;)

i think blizzard consists of a bunch of gamers that do some crazy, fun but sick things. They created this item...so this would happen. Name calling, flaming using the words "nub" or "noob". They are chilling at the heaven of all jobs, reading this message saying " see i told you so, they dont have lives..." *LOL'ing in the back ground*

exactly what it says.
All the item descriptions promise you an ability that your character already posseses.
For example:
Marvelous Madstone of Immortality
"This anchors your spirit to the world, allowing you to come back ... once your essence returns to where you perished!"
This means
--> When you die you become a spirit and you revive when you get to your corpse.
Another example:
Talisman of True Treasure Tracking
"Wearing this, one might find the most rarest of items in the most mundane of locales"
This means
--> You can find rare items in ordinary places. Also know as 'worlddrops'.
So why did the WoW-guys make these items?
Roleplay
- they explain game aspects that normally wouldnt seem 'realistic'.
Blizzard humor
- bringing irrelevent irl phenomenons into WoW - like beeing stopped by a hawaii looking guy who tries to sell you 'magic' necklaces - They do it all the time and it's often quite fun.

Are supposed to be for fun. A JOKE. Not only do people take these WAY to seriously and believe them, but there's people on the other side that don't think it's humorous at all. I find most of his amulets to be humorous. And I find it REALLY funny that people think it works.

You know, this mite actually work. Other necklaces are crap but this one doesn't have any special effects; it leads the people to thinking theyre getting more rare drops. Not a technical effect, but a mental persuasion

Well, I have not try this talisman, but I have tried mechanical squirrel, that engineers craft. It brings luck and the drop from ordinary mobs raise! I found a lot of green items, and few blue. Now I am waiting for purple! :D
IT IS REAL! THE SQUIRREL WORKS! DON'T LOOSE TIME WITH THIS NECK! GET SQUIRREL ASP!

One reason these neck pieces serve a purpose. They romove gold from the economy, it's an attempt to keep prices of various items. The more money people have the higher the cost of items in auctions houses and from players. It's simple economics. Not the only contributing factor to outragous prices but part of it.

I bought this Neckpiece and logged out, the next day I logged in and had full tier 6 and a legendary staff. I was also granted level 71 and had a new title of <GOD> over my name. kinda strange , this thing works:P

People, just like everyone else said if you buy this item it ain't going to work because the guy in Shathrah or that Outland city whatever it's called is a CON-ARTIST which means a person who pretty much fools you into giving them money! So please for the luvva dirt don't buy it! Peace out! d:D

Thottbot
Actually, it turns out he is a con artist, I'm afraid.
You see, I bought this talisman one day, thinking that maybe it would be my key to finding, say, silver pieces lying around on a bear or something crazy like that, I don't know. As it turns out, after I logged out, my girlfriend called to tell me that she'd found someone less gullible than me. Then I opened my post to discover that my parents, burdened with my slightly special DNA had eaten a salmon two years past its sell by date and died. My manager phoned the next day to tell me that I was being let go because I'd invested our entire company assets in these fantastic chocolate teapots that some guy on the street told me were about to take off in a big way. Never did see him again. It is, in fact, a BAD luck talisman!1111
Bit of good luck today, finally, a chap in China that I've never met sent me an email saying he's got $2.3 million in gold that he wants to share with me and all I have to do is give him complete access to my bank accounts. How cool is that?

I must say. This IS the most hillarious thread in thottbot history.
I have NEVER laughed so hard reading about items on thott, EVER. :)
Just for the record of the guy with his GF looting items of herbs. NEWS! - Lichen drops items BY itself (omg!) it DOES NOT have anything to do with this silly necklace.
I have been very lucky with my drops in wow, always. Got a epic dagger off arcatraz run and won it. Gotten items i wanted to drop, fast. Just got epic mail shoulders and leggins from Heroic Underbog and Slavepens (shaman). Both yesterday, first time i was there.
I have found alot of BoE epic.
I am lucky with motes drop, got almost 4 primal airs in less than one hour farming in Shadowmoon.
Do i have to say i was NOT wearing this silly piece?
If you have alot of gold to spend, buy it.
If you have common sence. Do not.

Has noone noticed the conversation between Griftah and the Peacekeeper Jadaar that stands right next to him?
If you walk up to or past Griftah it sets off the conversation, along the lines of:
"Griftah says: C'mere, <race>. Ya don't want to be riskin' yerself in a dungeon, do ya? Filthy work, and for what? Some worthless trinket? Nah, what ya need be one of my amulets. Guaranteed to work!
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: Truly? "Guaranteed?" We'll have to sit down and talk at length about this "guarantee" of yours, merchant.
Griftah slumps his shoulders, muttering imprecations under his breath."
If you stand near him long enough and enough people go by, or if you walk past him a few times the other trigger conversations you get are:
"Griftah says: Hey! Hey, <race>! I be havin' just the thing for ya. Ya ever see a tikbalang? Frightenin' creatures. Prone to stealin' ya away. What ya need is one of my tikbalang wards. Guaranteed to ward away all tikbalangs!
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: I've never heard of a tikbalang in my life. In fact, the Scryers tell me they can't find a single mention of one in their libraries...
Griftah says: Look, man, they didn't live to be writin' about it, okay?"
and
Griftah says: Look over here, <class>! I got somethin' for ya. Just what ya need. It's soap, right... and it's on a rope! No offense, honey, but yer a little ripe, know what I'm sayin'?
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: Are you insulting our citizens?
Griftah says: It's the truth, man. Can't ya smell that?
Peacekeeper Jadaar sniffs the air and frowns. He glances over his shoulder.
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: That... odor is from Tobias, I believe.
Griftah's frustrated frown disappears into a sly look.
Griftah says: ...do ya think he be buyin' soap on a rope, mebbe?
Peacekeeper Jadaar rolls his eyes."
or
"Griftah says: Ya look lovesick. Special someone be gettin' ya down, eh? No worries, no worries. Ya get this medallion from me, ya wear it when ya see 'em, and they be all over ya, man!
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: Are you insinuating that you sell devices which hold sway over others' minds? That is a very dangerous claim...
Griftah turns to Jadaar with an exasperated expression.
Griftah says: Ya be crampin' my style, man. Seriously.
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: Provided your "style" does not include swindling the inhabitants of the city, my words should not "cramp" it whatsoever.
Griftah says: Yeah, yeah."
Though I must admit my favourites are:
Griftah says: Ya look tired, <class>. I be havin' somethin' for ya. These amulets, they can help ya leap obstacles and swim through the rivers like ya be born to it. They energize the food ya be eatin', makin' yer wounds close before yer eyes!
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: I don't suppose you'd be amenable to demonstrating the amulet's healing power here and now...?
Griftah says: Ah... nah, man. Don't wanna get the merchandise all messy, ya know?
Griftah smiles nervously.
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: Very well. Later, however, I wish to see proof of your claims.
Griftah says: Yeah! Yeah. Later, man. Much later."
and
Griftah says: Dangerous out there, innit? Know what ya need? Protection. I can help ya defy death itself! Ya wear this madstone 'round yer neck, see, and then ya be able to come back if ya find yerself in the spirit world! Just a quick jaunt to yer corpse and up ya come, fresh and new!
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: You cannot possibly be suggesting that these baubles of yours hold sway over the very fabric of life itself!
Griftah growls angrily.
Griftah says: Ya wanna find out?
Peacekeeper Jadaar gives Griftah a chilly stare.
Peacekeeper Jadaar says: ...was that a THREAT?
Griftah says: Ah... uh... nah.
Grok says: Hey, troll! Why dis charm no work?"
(Grok is the guy that stands at the opposite stall to Griftah, near Granny Smith)
If those last 2 don't imply he's a dodgy swindling guy I dunno what does!
It's role play guys! Like the other guy said in his post, you can buy various items, shirts, flowers, rings, that just make you look good so you can flash off how much gold you have spare that you can spend it on this stuff, or, of course, to wear to that wedding or funeral you've been invited too ;).

This is fake, people, as you can already find rare items in mundane places. Wouldn't you consider it rare if you actually lived in that world and found that a demon boar was wearing Moldy Pants? It's just for fun or, for some, to show off their items that they think are cool, yet really aren't necessary. I do that with my Brewfest Ram; I alternate mounting on my ram and my tiger because I like the ram and it's kinda fun to show off. The same sort of thing goes for the Winterspring Frostsaber as well. Some people get the rep for it though it really isn't necessary.
And Deathkage, I'm just wondering because I think I've seen someone by that name before: are you a horde lock on Sargeras? I'm not sure but I think I saw you at Marshal's Refuge

I really wish Wowhead would separate the search engine from the other versions of their site... I am so tired of ending up on pages that don't apply to current content and cause people to miss out on crap.
For the current retail version of the game THIS ITEM HAS A PURPOSE!
You might be nuts if you actually go through with it but it's there just the same. I give you the craziest thing you will ever do in Azeroth...
Good luck and enjoy the newly padded walls.
