This guide provides tips and strategies for defeating the Illidan Stormrage encounter in Black Temple in Burning Crusade Classic.
Illidan Stormrage Tips for Black Temple in Burning Crusade Classic
Tips for Tanks on Illidan Stormrage
There will be 4 different tanks needed for Illidan Stormrage. A "normal" physical mitigation tank, two fire resistance tanks, and one shadow resistance

During phase 1 the physical mitigation tank will be used. Be sure to reposition slightly after each

, and keep the boss facing away from any other raiders to prevent any extra healing from

During phase 2, both fire resistance tanks will be used - one on each Flame of Azzinoth. Drag the flames around slowly to avoid the green fire that they spew around themselves, but don't move too far away from the Warglaive your Flame is linked to - this will cause it to enrage. Be wary of the blue eye beams during this phase as well. The initial impact damage is deadly, but the persistent blue flames won't deal too much damage.
Phase 3 will be tanked by the same player as phase 1 with the same mechanics as far as the tank is concerned.
Phase 4 will be tanked by the shadow resistance

. The warlock must stand far away from Illidan and from the other raiders, because Illidan will continuously cast

at the warlock tank. Shadow Blast deals massive shadow damage to the tank and all players within 20 yards of the tank.
Tips for Melee on Illidan Stormrage
When facing the Flames of Azzinoth in phase 2, melee may have to back off temporarily if there is a bad combination of

and

positioning, but most of the time they should be able to attack the Flames.

Illidan and the Flames of Azzinoth are both demon-type enemies. Players can use

instead of their usual flask or elixir for a large boost in damage output.
Be sure to pump lots of damage out whenever Illidan is trapped during phase 5, the trap effect doubles all damage received by the boss!
Tips for Ranged on Illidan Stormrage
Ranged damage dealers are preferred for Illidan Stormrage because many phases involve careful positioning and area of effect damage that are more difficult for melee to handle.
Be sure to target and focus down the Parasitic Shadowfiends in phase 1, 3, and 5. Ranged damage dealers are best suited to changing targets quickly and killing those enemies before they cause more problems.

During the demon phase, quickly swap and kill the Shadow Demons which spawn. Theses need to be killed before they reach their targets or else those players will die.

Tips for Healers on Illidan Stormrage
Throughout all the phases of the boss there will be some form of raid damage and tank damage to be healed.
Without a doubt, phase 2 has some of the most intense healing requirements. Be sure to look out for players afflicted with
黑暗壁垒
, they will need focused healing to avoid death.
A priest's

will be great to be placed on all players, and a

will help mitigate a lot of damage as well.
Look out for the

during phase 5, this can result in spikes of damage on the tank.
Illidan Stormrage Strategy for Black Temple in Burning Crusade Classic
For Illidan your raid will need multiple tanks each for different parts of the fight. You will need one "normal" tank with physical mitigation (
战士
or
圣骑士
are good choices), two tanks with capped fire resistance (can be
战士
,
圣骑士
, or
德鲁伊
), and one
术士
tank with capped shadow resistance.
Phase 1
Phase 1 begins fighting Illidan on the ground. The boss should be tanked by your
战士
or
圣骑士
tank with physical mitigation. These classes are ideal because they can reach 100% chance to get either block, dodge, or parry. This is important to avoid the
剪切
spell. You will contend with just a few abilities in phase 1 while damaging the boss.
Illidan will frequently use
剪切
against the main tank. If this ability lands on the tank they are very likely to die shortly after due to the massive loss of maximum health. If this ability is blocked, dodged, misses, or is parried the debuff will not be applied to the main tank. This makes tanks who can get a combined chance of 100% for a block, dodge, or parry essential for tanking Illidan. For a
战士
s or
圣骑士
s this is relatively easy, but for a feral
德鲁伊
it is very difficult or impossible to reach those avoidance levels without access to block or parry.
Illidan will also sometimes use
烈焰碰撞
, where he jumps up into the air then quickly crashes back down where he was standing. This deals area of effect damage to everyone in the landing zone and then also leaves a persistent blue flame effect in the area that deals 5000 fire damage every 2 seconds to anyone standing in it. The boss will need to be repositioned slightly after each Flame Crash to avoid this blue flame.
Illidan has a frontal cone attack called
吸取灵魂
which hits all players in front of the boss for 4500 shadow damage and heals Illidan for 100000 health per target hit by Draw Souls. It is important that Illidan is faced away from all other raiders to minimize the healing he receives from this ability. It is important to have some form of healing debuff on Illidan whenever he is able to cast this ability. A

will all do the job but you only need one since these effects do not stack.
Lastly Illidan will afflict random raiders with

, dealing 3000 shadow damage every 2 seconds for 10 seconds. When the debuff ends, 2

will spawn at the feet of the player and move towards other players. If a parasite reaches a player, it will infect them with the
寄生暗影魔
debuff again. It is important to kill the parasites before they reach any other players and this is the responsibility of the ranged damage dealers. It can be useful to have a
猎人
place a frost trap off to the side and then anyone afflicted with Parasitic Shadowfiend can go there to spawn them, providing an immediate slowing effect to make killing the parasites easier.
All of these abilities will repeat while you damage the boss throughout phase 1. Illidan begins phase 2 when he reaches 65% health.
Phase 2
In phase 2, Illidan will fly high in the air and your raid will not need to tank Illidan. Illidan will throw down both of his Warglaives, and each one will spawn a

enemy. Each Flame will need a fire resist capped tank player to handle it. The raid should divide up into 3 or 4 groups and stay in the center circle. Each group should be tightly packed, but the groups should be at least 11 yards apart. The raid is separated like that to minimize damage from Illidan's

s, which he will be launching at random raid members throughout phase 2.
The Flames of Azzinoth must be kept in close proximity to the Warglaive that spawned the Flame. If a Flame is moved too far away from it's tethered Warglaive, it will gain
狂野怨灵
, increasing damage dealt by 500% and movement speed by 200%. The Flames will also sense if any player gets too far away and immediately charge them, which in turn will break their tether to the Warglaive and cause Uncaged Wrath. For this reason, the ranged and healers should all stay in the grated circle area between the two Warglaives.
The Flames will use
烈焰冲击
, a frontal cone fire damage attack and they will leave incredibly painful green fire called
光芒
as they move around. Tanks will need to slowly drag the Flames around to avoid standing in the Blaze, while being mindful of the facing direction of the Flame so that the raid is not hit with
烈焰冲击
.
During this phase Illidan will be using three abilities,
火球术
,
黑暗壁垒
, and
魔眼冲击
, more commonly known as "Eye Beams".
火球术
deals 2500 to 3000 fire damage to a random primary target as well as all players in a 10 yard radius around that target. This is why the raid is separated into multiple groups, so not every player is hit with every Fireball.
黑暗壁垒
will target random raid members and pummel them with 3000 shadow damage every second for 10 seconds. This player will need special attention from healers in order to not be killed.
The
魔眼冲击
"Eye Beams" come out two at a time and deal massive impact damage, then leave a persistent blue flame on the ground that deals 5000 fire damage per second to anyone standing in it. Your fire resist tanks on the Flames of Azzinoth will likely be moving through this blue flame occasionally because space is quite limited around the Warglaives that the Flames are tethered to.
In phase 2 the ranged DPS should focus on bringing down both Flames as quickly as possible. It can be difficult for melee DPS to deal effective damage in this phase due to the fire damage from many different sources around the Flame of Azzinoth. Smart positioning by tanks should allow pretty good uptime from melee, but sometimes they will have to back off. Healers should be busy with the two tanks, healing fireball damage on the raid, and focusing heals on any raider afflicted with Dark Barrage. Phase 2 ends when both Flame of Azzinoth are defeated, and Illidan will return to the ground.
Phase 3
Phase 3 begins when both Flame of Azzinoth are defeated from phase 2. Illidan returns to the ground and will begin a rotation between phase 3 for one minute and then phase 4 for one minute, repeating until he reaches 30% health.
In phase 3 all mechanics from phase 1 are still in play, so it is very similar. Illidan gains one additional ability called
苦痛之焰
. This hits a random raid member for 4000 initial fire damage and also damages all other players within 5 yards for the same amount. The primary target is afflicted by a debuff that deals 3000 fire damage every 5 seconds to the player and everyone around them for 60 seconds. It is important that all raiders are spread out to minimize the damage dealt by this ability.
Aside from this Agonizing Flames ability requiring the raid to spread out, phase 3 is handled the same as phase 1. After 1 minute of being in phase 3, Illidan will transform into an enormous demon and begin phase 4.
Phase 4
Phase 4 begins when Illidan transforms into a giant demon. He will remain in this form for 60 seconds before reverting to phase 3 again.
Illidan will be tanked by your shadow resistance warlock tank. Illidan in the demon form possesses the
恐怖光环
, which deals 1000 shadow damage to all players within 15 yards of Illidan every 2 seconds, while also increasing their shadow damage taken by 30% (effectively dealing 1300 damage per 2 seconds). This means that all players including the warlock tank will need to remain at least 15 yards away from Illidan, and melee will be able to do very little during the demon phase. Illidan will continuously cast
暗影冲击
at the warlock tank, which deals 8750 to 10750 shadow damage to the tank and anyone within 20 yards of the tank. All other players will have to be clear of both the tank and of Illidan.
During the demon phase, Illidan will frequently cast

, which targets every single raid member and deals fire damage to them and each player in a 5 yard radius around them. To avoid extra damage from this ability, all raiders will need to be spread out.
Illidan's final ability during demon form is
召唤影魔
, which will summon 4
影魔
at the feet of Illidan. Each demon will choose a random raid member and stun them while projecting a purple beam towards that player. The demon will move towards the player and if the demon reaches the player, that player will instantly die and the demon will acquire a new target, stun it, and move towards it. It is very important that the demons are killed before reaching any players. This can be made easier by mages using
强化暴风雪
at Illidan's feet when the demons are about to spawn, or warlocks timing some
腐蚀之种
to explode right as the demons spawn.
After 60 seconds of demon phase 4, Illidan will revert to night elf form and switch back to phase 3 mechanics. The phase 3 & 4 rotation will change slightly when Illidan reaches 30% health.
Phase 5
When Illidan reaches 30% health, "phase 5" begins. Phase 5 is really just phases 3 and 4 continuing, but with two new elements. The warden
玛维·影歌
will spawn to help you subdue Illidan Stormrage. She will attack Illidan and periodically lay down a Shadow Trap. If Illidan is moved over top of a Shadow Trap, it will stun him and increase his damage taken for a 15 seconds. This is particularly useful since Illidan will also gain the ability to
激怒
in phase 5, increasing damage dealt by 50% and attack speed by 30% for 20 seconds. It is great to drag Illidan over a Shadow Trap right as he Enrages, to help avoid that nasty spike of damage on the tank.
Phase 3 and 4 mechanics will repeat with Maiev helping you and periodic Enrages during the night elf form for Illidan until he is killed.
If you've done everything well enough, you've now defeated the lord of outland, the betrayer himself, Illidan Stormrage. Congratulations!

Illidan Stormrage Abilities for Black Temple in Burning Crusade Classic
Ability
Description
烈焰碰撞
With a little warning, Illidan jumps up in the air then quickly crashes down, dealing area of effect damage to everyone in a small radius and leaving persistent blue fire on the ground, which continues to damage players who remain in the area.

Frontal cone attack that hits all targets in front of Illidan for 4500 shadow damage. Illidan will heal for 100000 health per target hit by this ability.

Cast by Illidan against his primary threat target. Decreases the maximum health of the target by 60% for 7 seconds. Blocking, Dodging, or Parrying this attack will prevent the debuff from afflicting the tank.
寄生暗影魔
Illidan will put this debuff on random players dealing 3000 shadow damage every 2 seconds for 10 seconds. When the debuff ends, 2 Shadowfiend mobs are spawned at the feet of the player which will move towards other players. If they reach another player, they will infect them and apply the debuff to the new player.
火球术
Fireball targets random raid members during phase 2 and deals between 2500 and 3000 fire damage to the primary target and all players within 10 yards of that target.

Dark Barrage targets random raid members during phase 2 and deals 3000 shadow damage per second for 10 seconds to a single player. Healers need to be alert for this and quickly focus heals to prevent that player from dying.

"Eye Beams"
Illidan will periodically cast two eye beams which damage all targets in a line for massive impact damage and then leave behind a persistent blue flame which deals around 5000 fire damage per second to any player standing in the flame.
苦痛之焰
Agonizing Flames is used by Illidan in phase 3 and 5. It targets a random raid member and deals 4000 fire damage to that player and anyone within 5 yards of the primary target. It also leaves a damage over time effect on the primary target which deals 3000 damage every 5 seconds to the player and anyone within 5 yards of them and lasts 60 seconds.

When Illidan transforms into a demon, he gains the Aura of Dread. This deals 1000 shadow damage every 2 seconds to all players within 15 yards of Illidan, and also increases their shadow damage taken by 30%, effectively dealing 1300 damage every 2 seconds to those players.

While Illidan is in demon form, he will frequently cast Flame Burst. This targets every raider at once, deaing around 3200 to 3500 fire damage to each player. Each player hit by this ability will also deal 3200 to 3500 fire damage to each other player within 5 yards of themselves.

While Illidan is in demon form, he will continuously cast this ability at the warlock tank. This deals 8750 - 10750 shadow damage to the tank and everyone within 20 yards of the tank.

While Illidan is in demon form, he will sometimes cast Summon Shadow Demons. This spawns 4

at Illidan's feet. Each Shadow Demon chooses a random raider and stuns them, projecting a purple beam towards that player. The demon will move towards the chosen player and if the demon reaches the player, the player instantly dies and the demon picks a new target.

In phase 5 Illidan gains the ability to periodically Enrage, increasing damage dealt by 50% and attack speed by 30% for 20 seconds.

You mention how difficult it is for melee to attack the Flames of Azzinoth in Phase 2, but it is not altogether that difficult. Your tank should face the flame away from the raid, like suggested and melee can stand at max melee range behind the flame while the flame is repositioned by a strafing tank. Melee can attack the flame without taking any damage from green fire if they are aware of their surroundings.

Regarding tanking Illidan in Phase 1/3, this guide indicates that a Warrior is the ideal tank. I think it really is the Paladin out of all three classes. Here's why:
I think it's worth mentioning that a Druid is ill-equipped to tank Illidan on Phases 1/3 due to the Shear mechanic: Unless the Druid can get 100% chance to dodge (which is not impossible in TBC, but unrealistic in this phase), they'll eat the Shear and be very vulnerable due to the 60% Max HP reduction.
While Paladins and Warriors can both handle it, it seems that this is the fight where the Paladin tank can shine. The Paladin will need slightly more avoidance than they normally come with for uncrushability (since Shear cannot miss, they need to fill in that chunk of the attack table with a little extra dodge/parry/block to ensure they get one of those 3 results on every Shear), but their Holy Shield will have 100% uptime and they get the bonus of using Exorcism on this fight for some more threat.
A Warrior CAN do it, but Illidan has a fast attack (I believe), and if you're spamming Shield Block to avoid crushing blows, you may get caught without a block charge for Shear, which can cause a tank death.
Paladin just seems like the safer choice, and it's nice to give them a big boss where they are uniquely suited to tank it over the other 2 tank classes (there are very few boss fights in TBC where the Paladin tank is to go-to, so I'm very happy they get this one).
